Written Reflection (20%) : Life Begins at The End of Your Comfort Zone
1.0 Content : Relevant information for the intended position that I have obtained from
the talks.
In life, you can always plan everything out but always ready for a backup plan. The
same thing applies to job market especially in the legal field. Not every law students will
actually choose to end up as a lawyer. As for me, I chose this path due to my exposure to
American series such as Suits and Scandal. However, in the future, the moment I decide being
a lawyer is not the right career for me, I cannot waste all those years in law school and have to
find other professions that relate to my law degree. This is because the scope of job
opportunities for law graduates is actually wider than I used to think.
One of the example is journalism where a law graduate can be assigned with court
reporting as they are very familiar with the legal terms and court procedures. Other path that
can be chosen is diplomacy. Since government decisions are bound by law, a law graduate’s
legal knowledge is very essential to understand the whole process especially in interpreting the
documents and statutes. Therefore, at the end of the day, being a lawyer is not the career that
is left for law graduates. There are always other professions that suit with the legal knowledge
acquired.
3.0 Preparedness for The Job Market : Reflect on my readiness to apply for the job.
I believe legal field is not that easy and even with the 4 years I spent studying in law school,
the knowledge acquired is not enough. The talk I attended taught me what we learnt in lecture
is just the theory. The reality of legal field is something you can only understand by
experiencing it. I teaches you time is of the essence and being nice with everyone not only to
judges and other lawyers but also the people who work in court or even a dispatcher. I learnt
from the talk given by one of the speakers that it is better to start practicing with a small firm
in order for me to get the exposure. Therefore, I believe I am well prepared for all the hardships
and bitterness in legal field. I took the advice and applied for a small firm in Kajang for my
internship programme for 10 weeks starting this June.
