This letter of St. Paul to Romans serves as the foundation of the Catholic Religion because the
word catholic is derived from Late Latin catholicus, from the Greek adjective katholikos meaning
“universal”. Indeed Catholic religion is known in the whole world. And one of the Catholic
countries in the world is the Philippines.
The Philippines was Christianized when Magellan came to Cebu on 1521. Rajah Hummabon
and his wife, Queen Juana, were the first Filipinos to be declared as Catholics after they accept
the sacrament of Baptism. As a gift and sign of friendship between the two race, Magellan gave
Queen Juana the image of Sto. Niño which according to historians, became the first sign of
treaty between the Spaniards and the early Filipinos. From then, the country’s religion
drastically move from animistic beliefs to the Catholicism and its impact on our morality, politics,
and social landscape continues to influence our living until today.
