Chapter 10

The Correlated Metallic

State

The variational method introduced in Chapter 9 is admittedly a very

approximate way to describe the ground state of the Hubbard model.
However, it offers us a nice pictorial way of thinking about local cor-
relation effects. Besides, it allows an easy access to discovering two
important features of the correlated metallic state: the reduction of the
size of the step-like discontinuity in the band state occupation number,
and the closely related correlation enhancement of the effective mass.

10.1 The Reduced Fermi Step

It is instructive to consider the renormalization factor of the kinetic

For a paramagnetic state, q does not depend on the spin. Our cluster
method (cf. (9.37), (9.43), and (9.45)) gives
