9 Gutzwiller Method

where n = N / L , and the Fermi wave vector is k~ = m. In the second case,

we find

so all in all
1
(fiofig) = n2 - - sin2 nng.
(.1rg)2 (9.57)

For a half-filled band, n = 1/2, and the quantum-mechanical correction to the

asymptotic (and, if you like to put it that way, classical) value 1/4 vanishes
for even g, while it is always negative for odd g, falling off as 1/g2. Antisym-
metrization of the wave function suppresses the probability of the simultaneous
occupation of nearest-neighbour sites by about 40 per cent!
Remark: We could have invoked Wick's theorem to rewrite (9.56) as

(9.58)

where
1
fgo = ( c ~ Q )= - sinn rg (9.59)
*g
is an element of the one-particle density matrix.
Problem 9.2. Let 1a.0)be the ground state of the spinless fermion sea (arbi-
trary filling). The probability of finding holes at the nearest-neighbour sites g
and h is (1 - n)2ghh(gh),where ghh(gh) is the hole-hole correlation function.
Using Wick's theorem (see the Remark above)
(@01(1 - fig)(1 - i i h ) J @ o ) = 1 - 2n + (@o(figfihl@o)= (1 - n)' - f& . (9.60)
For a hypercubic lattice with nearest-neighbour hopping --t, the kinetic energy
density .&in can be expressed as &in = -2Dtfgh, thus we find

(9.61)

The exchange hole effect is expressed by the correction to 1. Since a reasonable

definition of high-dimensional lattices keeps &in finite, we conclude that the
exchange hole gets weaker in high dimensions, and it vanishes as D 3 00.
