By the time T reaches T * ,the fine structure of the DOS gets com-
pletely washed over, and we are left with L essentially indepen-

dent fl-sites, surrounded by a light electron gas which sees the Ce

ions as scattering centers. The measured T-dependence of the sus-
ceptibility of CeA13 (Fig. 11.11, right) can be fitted for T > 35K
with a Curie-Weiss formula with peff M 2 . 6 which ~ ~ is essentially
the magnetic moment of free Ce3+ ions. On the other hand, x is
non-monotonic at low T,and eventually converges to a finite value as
T 4 0. x(T = 0) is two orders of magnitude larger than values typical
for simple metals; we interpret it as an enhanced Pauli susceptibility:
X(T = 0) = (gPB)2P*(P) (9PB)2(m*/m)W-1*

Figure 11.11: Measurements on CeAl3 reveal the formation of a narrow effective

band with a width of the order of 10K at low temperatures, and independent-ion
behaviour at T > 50K (after [317]). Left: the T-dependence of the resistivity p.

Inset: p = po A'T2 is well-obeyed for T < 0.1K. Right: the T-dependence of the
inverse susceptibility x-' is well-fitted by a CurieWeiss expression at high T, while
at low T (inset), x approaches a finite value which we identify as the enhanced Pauli
susceptibility.

What must be happening as T is lowered from lOOK to l K , is that

the f-electrons change their character completely: they cease to be inde-
pendent scattering centers, and become charge carriers. It also follows
that at low T,f-electrons merge into the Fermi sea which consequently
