Standing Figure – 1908

Picasso’s Standing Figure-1908 was fascinating to me. Like a geometric version of Leonardo’s
Virtruvian Man, it stood out to me in the way that he uses the figure to make a complete
geometric shape in its own right. Looked at from a certain angle, it looks like some sort of
graphic design symbol or experiment. Looked at close up, and you see the subtle movement of a
model. The painting to me implies mass and scale. At times it’s difficult to see what pose the
model was in due to Picasso’s jagged style. I enjoyed the colors very much. The Flesh tones
invite sensuousness and the Blues evoke Mystery. Picasso made a very daring work with the
pose of the model. Her Arms sharp like sickles over her upward facing head. The legs, at once
powerful and bulky and a thick torso with points for a bust. Like we saw with Woman, Picasso’s
is fixated upon power images of Feminine Mystique.
