The movie is all about a private investigator in Los Angeles named J.J “Jake” Gittes and a woman
identifying herself as Evelyn Mulwray who hires him. The impostor Mrs: Mulray tell Mr: Gittes to follow her
husband to see if her husband is committing adultery. So he follow him and he saw Mr. Mulwray kissing a
young girl and take a pictures of it, which are published on the front page of the following day’s newspaper.
Because of this the real Mrs. Mulwray confronted him and that he can expect a lawsuit. Afterwards Mr. Gittes
realize that Mr. Mulwray is the real target and he was set up. So he want to meet Mr. Mulwray but turns out
Mr. Mulwray is already dead and it was suicide but the reality is he was murdered so Jake starts to unravel
the mystery. During his investigations he notice that although there is a drought, huge amounts of water are
release in the reservoir every night and warns of by the water department and bleed his nose. Eventually,
Jake discovers that someone has buying up land in the northwest valley outside the Los Angeles, using the
names of retirement home residents to cover up the real name of the owners. And in this land they’ve been
moving stolen water, so they can sell it to the drought suffering city. But basically they are controlling the L.A
water supply and eventually jake discovers that the man behind all of this is Mr.Noah Cross who are the
partner of Mr. Hollis Mulwray and turns out to be Evelyn Mulwray father. Later on in the movie Jake started
to fall for Evelyn. And the fake Evelyn is now murdered whose real name is Ida Sessions. Mr. Gittes started
to investigates Evelyn Father but Evelyn warns him saying that he was dangerous and insanely crazy. During
the night, Mr. Gittes followed Evelyn’s car to a house , where he saw her holding the girl who he saw kissing
Mr. Mulwray. Because of this he thinks that Evelyn know who killed her husband and prevent the girl to talk.
Later on he also discovered that Mr. Mulwray didn’t drown the reservoir but drown in the saltwater pond in
Evelyn’s Backyard. So Mr. Gittes confronted her about the things that he saw then Evelyn break downs and
admit the truth. The girl that she seems to be captive is actually her sister and her daughter who’se the father
is her father Mr. Noah Cross and the mystery behind Mr. Mulwray sudden death is explained. Noah Cross
murdered Hollis by drowning him in the pond and Evelyn tries to escape together with her sister/ daughter.
So Mr. GIttes decided to help her. Afterwards during Jake confronts Noah, Tragedy happen. Noah and his
henchman drag Jake to L.A’s Chinatown where Evelyn’s trying to escape suddenly the cops appeared in the
scene and try to arrest evelyn because they think that she was a murderer. Jake tries to explain it to the cops
but they don’t believe him reason why shooting her to dead after Evelyn’s shoots Noah and try to escape.
I have a mixed emotion after watching this movie. I feel amazed, loved,happy, scared and sad.
Amazed because of the plot itself. The director Roman Polanski make a marvellous movie , he explained
briefly the problems of water in the Los Angeles during this period. The water problems seems so realistic
but not now in my time. Also the cast of the movie was great in acting their characters especially Ms. Faye
Dunaway who act the character of Mrs. Evelyn Mulwray. I can say that her character in this movie is a big
masterpiece and tragic . Her story brought me to tears because even though there was a sad story behind
her life and she was scared to her father she’s still standing in her own feet. That’s why I like her character
but in the beginning of the movie I think she was also the murderer because she’s mysterious for me. I wonder
why she want to investigate her husband’ because of adultery which is good but I think hiring a private
investigator is a bad thing for her husband’s private life, then later on her husband found dead “suicide” but
actualy murdered. In this scene Im 100% sure that Mrs. Mulwray is the murderer but it turns out that Mr.
Gittes is set up and the Evelyn Mulwray who hires him is fake. And In the climax of the movie I started to like
her character. Also the antagonist Noah Cross potrayed really well because as a viewer I hate him.
 Next is I feel Loved , Well may be because of the romance between Jake and Evelyn. And also the
loved of Evelyn to her daughter/sister. I was shock to knew that Mr. Mulwray mistress turns out to be her
daughter and sister. Which is a big mystery and shocking in this movie. Imagine because of Mr. Gittes
curiosity about the death of Mr. Mulwray he will be discovered this shocking story. The reason why I also
loved the character of Evelyn Mulwray.
Then I feel happy , Yes this movie has a sad ending but there’s some scene in this movie that I cant
resist to laugh. Because of Mr. Gittes funny scene such us when he was trying to escape by the angry
landowners who think that he was one of water department attempting to force them out by sabotaging their
water supply. I find it funny because one of the landowners who have a disability smash him with his limp
and the dialougue itself between Mr. Gittes and the landowners. And many other scene shows the funny side
of Mr. Gittes.
Then I feel scared , there are two scene in this movie that I feel scared. First is the scene when Mr.
Gitter warns by Water department and bleed his nose, I was like damn it hurts and Second is the latter part
of the movie when Mr. Gittes and Mrs. Evelyn Mulwray confronted Noah Cross in the Chinatown. I feel scared
because I thought that how if my favourite and beloved character died in this scene, I think I can’t breathe if
that was happen. Then the police came in the scene and this police is a big hindrances for the escape of
Mrs. Evelyn Mulwray. Lastly is I feel sad because of Evelyn past stories about the obsession of her father
during her teenager day and the reason why she have this young girl who became mistress of her husband
and turns out to be her daughter/ sister . And the scene when the cops shoot her causing her dead cause
me to hate the director because of killing her character but I think may be the director do it because this can
be a big factor to liked the movie by the viewer which is hit me also. That’s why I really liked this movie
because it was like my favourite anime “Detective Conan “. At first I thought this movie was boring because
its old and black and white , imagine it was a 1974 movie. Its to old but I was wrong the movie itself is great
and perfect.
After Watching the movie I wonder why the titled is Chinatown then I realized that may be because
Chinatown is the setting in the conclusion of the movies and Chinatown is a place that brings many memories
about Mr. Gittes and about Mrs. Evelyn. If I can rate this movie to 1 – 10. I would give it a 10 a perfect score
because this movie is really good, exceed my expectations and worth it to watch even though it was an old
movie but this movie explained really well about the problems in water supply in Los Angeles and Owens
Valley.
