 POWER QUALITY GLOSSARY
Event

An occurrence which causes a change in supply voltage or frequency outside the nominal limits.

Harmonic

A sinusodial component of an AC voltage that is multiple of the fundamental waveform frequency.

THD - Total Harmonic Distortion

The sum of the distortion of the sine wave whose frequency is a multiple of the fundamental frequency. Converts
the normal sine wave into a complex (distorted) waveform.

Triplen Harmonics

A term frequently used to refer to the odd multiples of the third harmonic, which deserve special attention because
of their natural tendency to be zero sequence.

Zero sequence

These third order, zero sequence harmonic components, unlike positive and negative sequence harmonic
currents, do not cancel but add up arithmetically at the neutral bus.

• High Total Harmonic Distortion of • Low Power Factor

DF

The ratio of distortion of a waveform with respect to the fundamental.

Flicker

Fluctuations in lighting levels perceived by the human eye. These fluctuations may be cause by rapidly changing
electrical loads.

RMS - Root Mean Square

The RMS voltage of a signal is computed by squaring the instantaneous voltage, integrating over the desired time,
and taking the square root. RMS computation is used for measurements to find the power carrying capability of a
signal.

Sag

A decrease to between 10% and 90% in RMS voltage or current at the power frequency for durations of 0.5 cycles
to one minute.

Surge

A temporary increase in the RMS value of the voltage or current of more than 10% the nominal voltage, at the power
frequency, for durations from 0.5 cycle to one minute.

Transients

A variation between two steady states during a time interval that is short compared to the time scale of interest.

Imbalance

The difference in individual phase voltage amplitudes in a three phase system. Usually expressed as a percentage.

 EARTH TESTING TECHNIQUES

Practical test measuring setup

In a practical earth test temporary earth stakes are

used, one stake usually noted as H or C2 is used as a 4pole
path for test current which is injected in to the earth
system under consideration.
The second stake which is usually noted as S or P2
measures the potential developed by the injection of the
test current. Earth electrode
A nominal distance of 20m between the stakes is Probe Aux. earth
recommended. This will vary depending on the nature of electrode

system under tests.

3pole- and 4pole-measurements

The standard earth test, usually called the 'Fall of

Potential Method' uses either 3 or 4 poles or
4pole connections. The four pole method compensates
for any voltage drop there may be in the wire used
to connect to the earth E under test. The fourth
wire is particularly important if the connection to the
E is a long distance from the instrument.

Selective measurement method

Selective earth testing is based on the standard 'Fall of

Potential Method' but has the advantage that the earth
system does not need to be disconnected.
The E point is connected to the instrument; a

current transformer is used to measure the test current
through 'selective' parts of the earthing system.

Stakeless measurement method

In this method the temporary stakes are replaced by

two current clamps. The test current from the E and
the H/C2 terminals of the instrument is fed through a
current clamp. This clamp is placed aroung the
conductor connecting the earth under test. A
second measuring clamp is placed around the same
conductor.
The resulting measurement is that of the earth under

consideration with a series element which is the
combined parallel resistance of all other connected
Current elements. As the combined resistance of the
parallel paths is small compared to the resistance of
the earth being measured. Clamps should be at
least 10 cm apart.

UKAS Test Facility
