Homework #1
Due 17:00pm Sunday January 21th by e-mail at jsgomez@ucdavis.edu

1. Problem 1.1. Orfanidis’s book.

2. Problem 1.2. Orfanidis’s book.
3. Problem 1.3. Orfanidis’s book.
4. Use Gauss’ theorem to prove the following:
a. Any excess of charge placed on a conductor must lie entirely on its surface.
b. A closed, hollow conductor shields its interior from fields due to charges outside but does
not shield its exterior from the fields due to charges placed inside it.
𝜎
c. The electric field at the surface of a conductor is normal surface and has a magnitude 𝜀
0
where 𝜎 is a static charge density per unit area on the surface and 𝜀0 is the free-space
permittivity.

5. Given 𝑭 = 𝑟̂ 𝑟1 + 𝑧̂ 𝑧2, evaluate the surface integral ∯ 𝑭 ∙ 𝑑𝒔 over the surface of a closed cylinder about
the z-axis specified by 𝑧 = ±3 and 𝜌 = 2. Also, evaluate ∭ ∇ ∙ 𝑭𝑑𝑣 over the same volume. Do the
results agree? Why?
6. A fat wire, with radius 𝑎, carries a constant current I, uniformly distributed over its cross section. A
narrow gap in the wire, of width 𝑤 ≪ 𝑎, forms a parallel-plate capacitor, as shown in Fig. 7.43. Find the
magnetic field in the gap, at a distance 𝑠 < 𝑎 from the axis.
Hint: Keep in mind Maxwell’s displacement current.

7. Sea water at frequency 𝜐 = 4 × 108 Hz has permittivity 𝜀 = 81𝜀0 , permeability 𝜇 = 𝜇0 and resistivity
1
𝜌 = 𝜎 = 0.23Ω ∙ 𝑚. What is the radio of conduction current to displacement current? [Hint: consider a
parallel-plate capacitor immersed in sea water and driven by a voltage 𝑉0 cos(2𝜋𝜐𝑡)].
