HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARY -DAY 1

CHARLOTTE PARKER is reading her favorite book while waiting

for her best friend, MILA ANDREWS, to finish taking her math
test. The fan in the room blowing her short brown hair around
her face.

Minutes later, Mila comes rushing in the library, black hair

flowing behind her in her signature hairstyle: half up, half
down, with her backpack in hand.

MILA
Charlotte! Guess what I just heard!

CHARLOTTE
Mila, this is a library. You have to
be more quiet, people are trying to do
their work.

MILA
Yeah yeah yeah, whatever. They'll be
okay. But guess what!

Mila smiles excitedly, letting Charlotte know that it must

have something to do with a party that's coming up.

CHARLOTTE
Nope. I already know what you're about
to say and as usual, the answer is-

Mila's smile instantly fades and she begins to pout.

MILA
But.. Char, COME ON! You're always
talking about how you wish you had the
confidence and outgoing personality
that MACKENZIE does. How else are you
going to achieve that unless you come
out of your shell?

CHARLOTTE
Easy, I'll ask Mackenzie for help.

MILA
(sarcastically) Yeah, because that's
totally going to help you.

CHARLOTTE
I know right. It's okay though. Senior
year hasn't even started yet, I have
plenty of time.

Charlotte smiles at Mila while she rolls her eyes.

MILA
Well, why wait to start? When you have
a perfectly good opportunity to begin
this weekend, at ALEXIA'S house at 9?

CHARLOTTE
Mila... I'm not going. That's final.
End of story. I have to go home
now,mom texted me saying I have to
help EMILY watch the kids. I'll see
you tomorrow.

Charlotte begins walking out the library towards the parking

lot, leaving Mila behind.

MILA
(whispers to herself) Mhm.. we'll see
about that.

2 EXT. MAIN ENTRANCE OF THE SCHOOL -THURSDAY MORNING 2

All the students begin walking into the school to escape the
crisp, chilly air, while Mila waits for Charlotte to get out
of the car.

About five minutes later, Charlotte walks up to Mila with a

glum expression on her face.

MILA
Why the sour look on your face love?

Charlotte and Mila start walking into the school cafeteria,

where everyone goes in the morning before the bell rings.

CHARLOTTE
I got no sleep at all. My parents went
out for their 20th anniversary, so
Emily and I had to watch the kids.

MILA
Okay..? What's so bad about that?

CHARLOTTE
MADISON and PETER stayed up ALL night.
We tried to get them to sleep for
hours but they weren't listening. They
broke so many things. Mom and dad are
going to kill me when they find out.

Well did you clean everything up?

CHARLOTTE
(sarcastically) Nope. I just left
everything on the floor for my parents
to clean.

Looks at Mila with a straight face.

Yes Mila. Of course I cleaned it up.

No thanks to Emily. She was in her
room talking to some boy she has a
crush on all night.

MILA
C'mon Char, give her a break. If you
were in her position you would have
did the same thing, only with CHRIS.
And she's your little sister, be happy
for her.

CHARLOTTE
I never said I wasn't happy for her.
It just would have been nice if she at
least tried to help. And no, I would
not have been like that with Chris
because I don't like him anymore.

MILA
Char, you've liked him since freshman
year.

CHARLOTTE
Exactly. Key word: liked. Meaning past
tense.

MILA
Okay, whatever you say.

Mila stays quiet for a couple minutes while looking at the

jocks all bust out in laughter

CHARLOTTE

Looks at Mila questionably

What? Why'd you get so quiet?

MILA
Ya know.. Chris is going to the party

MILA
Okay. How about this? If Emily goes,
you go.

Charlotte raises an eyebrow at Mila, signaling for her to

keep talking.

MILA (CONT'D)
You really want your little sister to
go her first high school party alone?
Where they'll most likely be drinking
and boys? Wow. You're really trusting
Char.

CHARLOTTE
How do you know if Emily's even going?

MILA
Lets find out.

Mila eyes the cafeteria, looking for a head full of long

blonde hair.

MILA (CONT'D)
Found her. (yells) Emily!

Emily turns around to see Mila waving her over. Emily begins
walking over to her sister and Mila.

MILA (CONT'D)
Hey Em, are you going to Alexia's
party this saturday?

MILA

Looks at Charlotte and grins

CHARLOTTE
Who are you going with?

EMILY
My friends. XAVIER is going too

him the whole time. Why?

CHARLOTTE

Stays quiet while looking at Chris, Xavier, and the rest of

the boys from a distance

Turns towards Mila

I'll go. Only because I have to look

out for Emily in case something bad
happens.

EMILY
(laughing) You? At a party? Yea, sure.
I'll believe when I see it sis.

CHARLOTTE

Looks at Emily

I'm going. I'm driving us all there

too.

EMILY
Don't have to tell me twice.

MILA
(giggles) Okay. We'll discuss the
details at lunch and then Emily, Char
will tell you the plan later at home.

Charlotte waits for Mila to join her at the table. While

waiting, she stares at Chris while he's looking at the camera
on his phone attempting to fix his black hair. wishing that
he would come talk to her. Minutes later, Mila arrives with
her usual box of goldfish in her hands.

MILA
I see you looking at lover boy. You're
not slick.

CHARLOTTE
I wasn't looking at him.

MILA
Then what were you doing?

CHARLOTTE
Looking at Xavier, trying to make sure
I approve of him having a thing with
my little sister.

MILA

Looks over at the boys

Char, Xavier isn't even over there.

CHARLOTTE
Oh.

Begins to blush, knowing that she got caught

MILA
(laughs) I knew it. (mocking Mila from
earlier this morning) I don't like him
anymore.

CHARLOTTE

Hits Mila from across the table then scowls

Shut up.

MILA
Okay, we need to talk about the plan.
The party starts at 8, so I think
that's when we should start getting
ready.

Why would we get ready at eight if the
party starts at eight?

MILA
(facepalms) Char, you never go to a
party on time. That's rule number one.

CHARLOTTE

Looks at Mila confused

MILA
Because. That's weird. Most people
show up at least 15 to 30 minutes
later than the stsrt time.

CHARLOTTE
And who is "most people" exactly?

MILA
Chris. And now us.

CHARLOTTE
Fine. So we start getting ready at 8.
I'm guessing we'll be done around 9.
9:30 at the latest?

MILA
Yea that sounds about right. Alexia
lives in North Side, which is about 15
minutes away from your house.

CHARLOTTE
You know that because..?

MILA
Google maps, duh. Anyway, the
important thing (grins) outfits.

CHARLOTTE
Well that part is easy. I'll wear my
black hoodie with my dark blue jeans
and my old skool vans.

MILA
Yea, no. You're not. You're borrowing
something from me. After school today
we're going to my house so you can

CHARLOTTE
(groans) Mila, noooo. I already agreed

Charlotte takes a handful of goldfish and aims to throw it at

Mila, but she ducks and the goldfish ends up hitting Chris in
the face as he walks by the table.

MILA (CONT'D)
Oop.

CHARLOTTE
(jaw drops, stuttering) Oh my gosh,
Chris, I'm so sorry. I was trying to
hit Mila but she moved and-

(laughs) don't worry about it, it's
all good, Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE
(a shocked expression takes over her
face) You know who I am?

CHRIS
Yea. Mackenzie's little sister right?

CHARLOTTE
Um.. yea. That's me.

CHRIS
It's weird. You're nothing like your
sister, I know everyone has their own
personality and everything but I
figured you would have at least had
SOME of Mackenzie's traits.

CHARLOTTE
(looks down, embarrassed) Yea..

CHRIS
Oh, hey I didn't mean for it to sound
like that. It's not a bad thing.

table.

Charlotte

Are you going to this party on

CHARLOTTE
Yea, I just decided that I am earlier
this morning.

CHRIS
(smiles) Look at you, maybe you do
have some of Mac's traits. (turns
around and walks back to his friends)

4 INT. MILA'S HOUSE- LATER THAT AFTERNOON 4

The girls rummage through Mila's closet, trying to find an

appropriate outfit for the party. Charlotte holds up a navy
blue shirt so Mila can get a good look at it.

CHARLOTTE
Okay... what about this? With black
jeans?

MILA
No.

CHARLOTTE
What if I wear one of my normal shirts
with ripped jeans and converse?

MILA
No. No jeans.

CHARLOTTE
Mila...

good outfit for me with you looking
through your closet like a psycho.

MILA
Yes there is. Because I know exactly
what I'm looking for.

CHARLOTTE
Which is..?

MILA
My denim jacket.

CHARLOTTE
To wear with..?

MILA
This.

Mila holds up a red dress.

CHARLOTTE
Mila, that cannot fit me.

MILA
(face palms) It's supposed to tight
Char. C'mon. Try it on.

(rolls her eyes and mimics Mila) Young

5 INT. CAFETERIA- FRIDAY MORNING 5

The girls stand in their usual spot in the cafeteria waiting

for the bell to ring.

MILA
You know the plan right?

CHARLOTTE
Yes. Tomorrow afternoon I'll come to
your house at 7. We'll chill for a
little bit, then start to get ready at
8.

MILA
(claps hands) Bueno. Oh look, there's
Chris (smirks)

CHARLOTTE
Cool. (blushes)

MILA
Ummm.. he's definitely walking over to-

CHRIS
Hey Mila. Hey Char, you guys are still

6 INT. MILA'S HOUSE- SATURDAY AFTERNOON 6

Emily and Mila start getting dressed for the party. Charlotte
walks in Mila's room eating a bag of chips. Mila notices and
walks over to snatch the bag of chips out her hand.

EMILY
Really Char? (laughing)

CHARLOTTE
What? I was hungry.

MILA
You could have asked me to make you
real food sweetie (laughs)

CHARLOTTE
Eh. Didn't want to disturb you from
finding your outfit.

MILA
It would have been fine. I found it
like 30 minutes ago. I was scrolling
through twitter for the rest of the
time. Oh! That reminds me. Look at
this.

CHALOTTE
(looks at Mila's phone to find a tweet
that Chris posted 45 minutes ago.
"Looking forward to having a lit night
tonight."

Emily, Charlotte, and Mila get out the car at Alexia's house.
Solo cups are everywhere, people are laughing and having a
good time, the music is blasting. Charlotte stops walking,
chills running up and down her spine once she gets closer to
the house.

CHARLOTTE
Woah.

EMILY
Yea. Woah.

8 INT. ALEXIA'S HOUSE- SATURDAY NIGHT, HOURS LATER 8

The party is still bustling. Charlotte and Mila watch as

Chris and Josh play a game.

CHARLOTTE
What game are they playing?

MILA
Beer pong.

CHARLOTTE
Can't they get drunk off of that?

MILA
Yup.

CHARLOTTE

CHRIS
It's okay. I'll help you. Just try to
throw the ball straight into that cup.

CHARLOTTE
Like.. (throws the ball, making it
right in the middle of the cup) that?

CHRIS, JOSH, AND MILA

Yesss! That's game.

JOSH
Aye, nice shot Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE
Thanks (smiles widely as she's getting
more comfortable in this new
environment)

CHRIS
Do you want a drink? They have sodas
and waters as well.

CHARLOTTE
sure. Can I get a sprite please?

CHRIS
Coming right up. (grabs Charlotte's
hand to lead her into the kitchen and
grabs her a can of sprite)

On the way there, Chris sees Josh glaring at Charlotte.

Wondering what's wrong, he gives him a weird look. Josh just
shakes his head and walks away without looking back.

this line from a movie I was watching
before I got here.

MILA
What movie?

Mila looks down at her shoes, but when she looks back up,
Josh is nowhere to be seen.

CHARLOTTE
(giggles awkwardly) Thanks.

CHRIS
Yea no problem. So what do you wanna
do now?

CHARLOTTE
I heard they have a bonfire.

CHRIS
Yea, it's out in the back. Wanna go
check it out?

CHARLOTTE
Sure. On the way there I'm just gonna
stop by Mila to let her know where
I'll be so she won't worry about me.

10 EXT. BONFIRE - MINUTES LATER 10

CHRIS
Why are you so quiet? You seem like a
great person to be around, but you
hide.

CHARLOTTE
I don't know to be honest. I've just
always been like this. (starts
laughing) This party was supposed to
try and make me more social.

CHRIS
So you can be more like Mac?

CHARLOTTE
Yea. Not exactly like her, but it wont
hurt to branch out a bit and talk to
more people.

CHRIS
And how's that going for you so far?

CHARLOTTE
Well right now, I think it's going
pretty great. What about you?

CHRIS
I'll say the same (smiles)

CHARLOTTE
My turn to ask you a question.

CHRIS
Shoot.

CHARLOTTE
When did you know who I was?

CHRIS
I've always known who you were. I
guess our paths just never crossed
until you threw goldfish at me the
other day

11 EXT. HIGHWAY- 20 YEARS LATER 11

*Screen reappears*

Chris is on his way home to take Charlotte and his twin boys,
ELIJAH and LIAM, out to dinner. He looks down at the clock
and realizes that with all this traffic, he's going to be
late. With this in mind, he calls Charlotte, telling her that
he's going to take another exit to try and get home faster,
knowing that if he's late again it'll cause another argument.

CHRIS
Char, I'll be there in less than 20
minutes I promise.

CHARLOTTE
(sighs) Okay Chris. Whatever.

CHRIS
Char please. I'll make it in time. And
if I don't I'll make it up to you.

CHARLOTTE
(stays silent)

CHRIS
Okay, I gotta go. I'll see you soon. I
love you.

CHARLOTTE
Yea. You too.

*Hangs up the phone*

12 INT. CHRIS AND CHARLOTTE'S HOUSE- 45 MINUTES LATER 12

Chris has yet to come. Charlotte is pissed. The boys are

grouchy because they're starving. Charlotte goes into the
kitchen to make the boys a little snack to tie them over
until their dad comes home.

ELIJAH
Hey mom, your phone is ringing

CHARLOTTE
Oh. I didn't even hear it. Thanks
sweetie.

ELIJAH
Sure. When is dad coming home?

CHARLOTTE
I don't know. That should be him
calling though.

Charlotte runs to get her phone. Chris' name flashes across

the screen.

CHARLOTTE (CONT'D)
Chris, where are you? The boys are
starving. I'm really tired of you
being late all the ti-

Charlotte gets cut off by a middle aged sounding police

officer named Alexandria.

ALEXANDRIA
Excuse me miss, I'm sorry. This isn't
your husband. My name is Alexandria.
I'm a police officer. I'm assuming
you're his wife though?

CHARLOTTE
Oh. I'm sorry, i didn't know. Is there
any way I can help you? And um.. can I
ask you as to why you have my
husband's phone?

Charlotte hears chaos behind on the next line. Wondering

what's wrong, her heart beat starts to quicken.

ALEXANDRIA
Ma'am. I'm so sorry to tell you this.
But your husband got in a really bad
car crash. A bystander called the
police and the ambulance. His body is
non responsive.

Charlotte's phone slipped out of her hand, her mind going

blank and into panic mode. She grabs the twins and darts out
the house, rushing to her car and making her way to the
nearby hospital that she knows they'll take him to.

13 INT. SAINT JOSE'S HOSPITAL- A COUPLE MINUTES LATER 13

The twins and Charlotte run into the hospital towards the
reception desk. Charlotte tells the lady that her husband was
just admitted into the emergency room.

RECEPTIONIST
Yes.. They're doing emergency surgery
on him as we speak ma'am. Please try
to remain calm. I'll let you know when
the doctor is ready to speak with you.

CHARLOTTE
Thank you.

14 INT. SAINT JOSE'S HOSPITAL- ABOUT TWO HOURS LATER 14

Charlotte and the twins are still frantically waiting in the

waiting room. They hear a voice and Charlotte looks up to the
sound of someone calling her name. A man dressed in white
stands by her, mentioning that he's the doctor that performed
the surgery on her husband.

DOCTOR JOHNSON
Hello ma'am. You must be Ms.
Rodriguez. I'm sorry to tell you this
but.. your husband didn't make it.
Neither did the person who crashed
into him.

Charlotte falls down onto her knees in despair.

ELIJAH
May I ask who the other person was?

DOCTOR JOHNSON
His name was Josh.

Charlotte's head automatically lifts up, realizing that the

name sounded extremely familiar. Tears still running down her
face like a waterfall.

CHARLOTTE
What was the last name?

DOCTOR JOHNSON
