DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGIES- Topic: App Design Project

Rationale: During this Technology unit students will be developing their Week: 7- 9 (6 lessons)
knowledge and skills in the area of digital technologies. Students will utilise
previous experience of applications to design their own app. This will be
Educational Setting: Year 5/6
achieved through consideration to why and for whom it is developed.
Students will develop their own design capabilities, thinking and creativity by
using sequenced steps to develop their ideas. They will utilise annotated
graphical representation to communicate their ideas to an audience,
Students will work in collaboration with a peer to design, develop and then
present their app to their class.

Concepts being explored Lesson 1- 50 minutes

 Technology for society Learning intention:

 Design processes To develop understanding about the applications for iPad and iPhones. What are they and
 Suitability of products how they work?
 Communication/ presentation of ideas
Teacher to ask:
What is an app?
Who might use an app?
Analysis of prior knowledge
What are the reasons somebody might use an app?
Some apps are free and some cost money, why do you think this is?
 What is an application (app)? How do you think a designer would work out how much an app should cost?
 Who might use an application (app)? Students to answer questions (hands up).
 Why do people use an application (app)?
Teacher to:
Introduce App Design Challenge Project.
 Hand out project booklet
Australian Curriculum  Explain the project: activities, process and assessment
 Ask for any questions

Generating ideas, possibilities and actions: Lesson 5-6 2x 50 minute lessons
 Seek solutions and put ideas into action
 Imagine possibilities and connect ideas Learning intention: Presentations: Pairs will present their app to the class.

Teacher to:
 Draw conclusions and design a course of action
Reflecting on thinking and processes:  Introduce lesson- presentations
 Write order of presentations on the whiteboard
 Reflect on processes
 Give each student yes/no questionnaire (would they buy the app)
 Assess each presentation against rubric
