How do we ensure well integrity

and well control?
In order to secure a safe operation it is vital that all Seadrill units operate to the highest
standards regarding well integrity and well control in drilling and well operations. A wide
and detailed reassessment encompassing equipment, systems, processes and crew
competence has been carried out.
REPORT: TOVE AASBERG
PHOTO: JAN ROAR SOLHAUG

Seadrill began this work some time before the

Macondo accident, but it was intensified follow-
ing the catastrophe. In its well control work the
company has also gone through the Montara
incident.
Seadrill has set minimum requirements for
well integrity and well control which emphasise
the general requirement of at least two clearly
defined and proven well barriers in place at all
times. With regard to specific requirements, the
client’s well programme must be reviewed,
with a special focus on barriers, by competent
Seadrill personnel and verified against
Norsok D-010, Well Integrity in Drilling and Well
Operations, as well as against the Seadrill Well
Control Manual and, when relevant, the Seadrill
HPHT Manual, before execution. The work related
to the latter two started back in January this year
and was finalised in July.
Competence is the key to a safe and
effective operation and it is the drilling section
leader’s responsibility to ensure that the drill
crew is fully capable of reacting promptly and
correctly when any abnormal situation or
indication thereof is detected.
If a loss of well control situation occurs, the
Seadrill Well Control Manual and Seadrill HPHT
Manual must be followed. If the bridging docu-
ment dictates that the client’s manual should be
followed, a gap analysis must be performed to
fully document that Seadrill’s minimum require-
ments have been met. A deviation request must
be approved by the local divisional vice presi-
dent before operations can start.
“To ensure that the safety of people on
board and the integrity of the rig are not
compromised, all instructions to the drill crew
have to come through our line of command,
which implies that our personnel have been
instructed not to take any direct orders from
client representatives,” says COO Per Wullf.

A well control handling questionnaire was sent

out in May to identify the standard of equipment
and systems, processes and procedures and crew
competence. Results from the reassessment have
been developed into a corporate directive and rig
specific action points which will ensure
consistent practice worldwide.

A lot of work went into the development of the

two manuals. The HPHT manual has been in
existence for some time and so only needed to
be updated, while The Seadrill Well Control
Manual required a more extensive process.
The work began last January when all the
well control manuals from the different
divisions were gathered in. “We took the most
important elements, developed them further
and put them into a common manual – The
Seadrill Well Control Manual – which was
circulated for comment,” says Reidar Kallesten,
drilling and well control manager.
“We got a lot of good feedback and
amplification of the content as well as
suggestions on how to improve it. The great
involvement and professionalism shown by our
colleagues around the company gave us extra
inspiration in the important work of developing
a common standard across the company.”
A day-long video conference was held with
participants from different parts of the
company in which the comments were
reviewed in order to reach a consensus on

“The whole mobilisation period was very
