ACTIVITY 3

WEIGHT VARIATION TEST OF POWDER FOR SUSPENSION

Weight variation test of the powder for suspension is the determination of

individual weights of powder per bottle, computing the average weight, relative standard
deviation of the individual weights and percentage weight variation.

OBJECTIVE: To be able to determine the weight variation of powder for suspension using the
statistical process control.

APPARATUS / GLASSWARE: Analytical balance, weighing boxes, oven

MATERIALS / SAMPLES: 10 bottles of powder for suspension

PROCEDURE:

1. Number and record each of the bottle and closure, for identification purposes.
2. Weigh the 10 bottles individually using the analytical balance. Record the weight.
3. Pour all the powder contents in weighing boxes or beaker.
4. Wash the bottles and closures without erasing the identification number.
5. Dry the bottles and closures thoroughly in the oven.
6. Turn on the oven, when the bottles and closures are all dry.
7. Let cool and weigh. Record the weight of each bottle with closure.
8. Compute the weight of the powder in each bottle by subtracting the weight of the dried
empty bottle from the weight of the bottle with the powder. Record the weight of the
powder.
9. Compute for the average weight of the powder and the % Relative Standard Deviation
(RSD). Record your data on the worksheet.
