VET ASSISTANCE
The educational requirements to be a vet assistant are to have a high school diploma or GED.
However, most clinics prefer to hire applicants with either an associates or bachelors degree in animal
science or a similar degree. There also needs to be on the job training with a minimum of 300 hours in
field with 200 hours in class.
Specialized experiences, certifications, and training also play a role in vet assisting readiness such
as hands-on-training. Certification is not required but is prefered depending on the employer, can be
obtained through state or private organizations. To be certificated most programs need relevant education
coursework, experience with a vet or vet technician, and a written exam to pass. Also, it is helpful to have
certification by NAVTA and to do this the student must complete the program. Must know veterinary
medical terminology, restraint and handling, surgical nursing and care. And laboratory and clinical
procedures.
There are a multitude of skills needed to quality has a Veterinary assistance most of them
pertaining to ​animal care, laboratory skills, and front desk tasks. ​Examples would be: ​good temperament,
physical fitness ,focus and multitasking abilities, interpersonal skills , communication, love of animals,
ability to handle stress, good temperament, clean and disinfect cages, oral and topical medications, and
monitoring animals for issues.
The salary range in North Carolina is from 16,800-35,300, the median is 22,300 per year.
