The graphs in Figure 2.4 show how these values vary with temperature, and how they
compare with the ‘Carnot limit’. Three important points should be noted:
• Although the graph and table would suggest that lower temperatures are better, the
voltage losses discussed in Chapter 3 are nearly always less at higher temperatures. So
in practice fuel cell voltages are usually higher at higher temperatures.
• The waste heat from the higher-temperature cells is more useful than that from lower-
temperature cells.
