Geotechnical Engineering III - Tutorial 5 – 2018

An 8 m long and 300 mm diameter precast concrete pile with rough finish is driven into a dry
sand deposit with  = 300 and  = 19.0 kN/m3. Estimate the maximum allowable load on the
pile,
(a) with a safety factor of 2.5 on the total load capacity
(b) with safety factors of 3.0 and 1.5 on end bearing and friction capacities respectively

Use Janbu’s equation with  = 90 degrees to determine ultimate bearing capacity. In estimating
skin friction, use the mid depth to evaluate the overburden stress.
