Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)
As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:
 Identify the significance of the bread and wine in the mass, what they mean and what
they turn into.
 Order and explain the elements of the Mass individually and then in pairs.
 Explain what the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist are and why they
are the main parts of the Mass.

Teacher’s Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for students at educational risk:

(include Teacher Witness) Choose One from:
• Gifted: Instead of cutting each main part of the Mass
Focus of the lesson: The significance of the two main parts of the Mass. only, students can cut out every step of the mass, jumble
them up and reorder them from there.
Teacher must have an understanding of the basic order of the Mass and • Sensory impaired
that the Liturgy of the Word is the readings/proclaiming of scripture, and • Learning difficulty
the Liturgy of the Eucharist is the consecration of the bread and wine.

copy that is not cut up for them or their partner to stick
into their workbooks.

Special Consideration: If students are unable to make their First

Communion because they are not Catholic, teacher must remind
the class that Jesus welcomes everyone into the Church. Those
not Baptised can become members of God’s family later in life if
they wish, and they can still participate in the learning of the
Sacrament.

Time: Motivation and Introduction:
Align these with the segment
9:00 Prayer table: where they will be introduced.
am
Have a prayer focus at the front of the classroom using bread, wine,
wheat, grapes, bible and candles.
Invite the students down to the mat to look at the prayer focus. Ask Prayer focus with bread, wine,
students to name each of the items in the prayer focus and how they are wheat, grapes, bible and
used to celebrate the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist candles set with the correct
liturgical cloth.
I wonder why we use Bread and Wine to signify Jesus’ body and blood…

Explain the significance of the bread and wine – Jesus wants to draw
many people together as one through the Eucharist, just as many grains
are combined to make flour, and many grapes combined to make wine.

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

9:10
am Students return to their desks and sit quietly.

“Today we are going to prepare for your First Communion Mass. This is a
very special occasion and it is important that you know the order of the
Mass. Like every Mass, the First Communion has two parts. Can any
guess what they are? They are the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of
the Eucharist. Does anyone know what these parts mean?”

Write on the board:

- Liturgy of the Word: Proclaiming of and listening to the scriptures
- Liturgy of the Eucharist: the gathering of the Holy table (Alter) to
consecrate the bread and wine, and to share the Body and Blood
of Christ.

Consecrate: The moment when the bread and wine are changed into the
Body and Blood of Jesus. Whiteboard and whiteboard
markers
“In a moment each of you will receive this sheet (hold up resource sheet
1) which outlines the order of the mass. We will be doing an activity with
this sheet.”

Hand out the sheet and get the students to have a quick look at it, then
show the video ‘What are the Parts of Mass’ on the interactive
whiteboard (IWB). Only need to show the first minute. Ask the students to
look at their sheet while watching and see if they can point out which bits
are being discussed in the video.
Read through the sheet and explain each section:
9:20 - Introductory Rite: This is when we gather through an entrance ‘What are the Parts of the
am hymn, the Penitential rite which is where we say sorry for our Mass’ Video:
sins, and an opening prayer. https://www.youtube.com/watc
- Liturgy of the Word: This is where we listen, we listen to the h?v=KJgEYDVmgYk
readings and the gospel and then the Priest will give his Homily.
- Liturgy of the Eucharist: the preparation of the Gifts and the
prayers over the gifts, Eucharistic Prayer and Communion rites
- Concluding rite: People are blessed and then there is often a
final hymn and then everyone is dismissed.

“Now I want you to cut up those four sections for me, just along the lines,
and then your challenge is to mix them up, turn them upside down so you
cannot see them and play a memory game with yourself by turning the
cards back over one by one and placing them in the correct order of the
mass. Once you have done that a few times, I want you to turn to your
partner and test them on the order of the mass using the cut-out pieces.”

If students want to extend themselves, they can cut out each individual
part of the mass and play the memory game from there. Scissors

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

9:45
am Students glue the order of the Mass into their Religion Workbooks with
the title ‘Elements of the Eucharist’.

Students pack away their Religion Workbooks and head back down to
the mat. Teacher grabs an Australian Children’s Mass book and shows
the students. Glue and Religion Workbooks

“This is a mass book that you can take with you to Church to remind you
of the order of mass and so you can then follow along and know exactly
what is happening.”

Ask the students to recite to you the order of the mass and show them Australian Children’s Mass

I wonder why the mass is split into the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy
of the Eucharist…

I wonder how I can be more involved in the Mass…

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

10:00
am Send the students back to their desks quietly. How can we imitate how
we would act in Mass here in the way we move through the classroom?

Students are to sit quietly and await instructions on what to do for the
next lesson.

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will they be

assessed?)
Anecdotal notes and observations of the student’s responses to the
prayer focus and their answers when ordering the mass.

Completion of gluing the Elements of the Eucharist into their workbooks

in the correct order.
