MAJOR PROJECTS
220 TONNE COAL HAULER
CLIENT: HASTINGS DEERING

The optimum design of the coal hauler was achieved

using a finite element model to identify areas of high
stress. The problems identified with existing coal haulers
were addressed in the design. Detailed drawings of the
vehicle components were produced by linking the finite
element model to the CAD drafting system. Over thirty of
these machines have been constructed with the oldest
exceeding 75,000 hours of operation to date.

160 TONNE COAL HAULER

CLIENT: KADOR ENGINEERING

This design was a scaled down version of the 220 tonne hauler in
some areas, but because of the different dimensional
requirements, other sections of the trailer were of a unique design.
As for the larger trailer, the entire hauler was modelled using Finite
Element Analysis, and the fatigue life was assessed using the
latest fatigue design codes. Considerable use of castings was
made in order to eliminate complex welded joints. Ten units have
been constructed.

BOOSTER DRIVE
CLIENT: BHP COAL

The Booster drive system is designed to enhance the

gradient-climbing and traction capability of a trailer-type
coal hauler by driving the trailer axle hydrostatically from a
power pack mounted on the prime mover. Drive from the
booster system is available at low to medium speed, where
additional power is usually required for ramps or in soft
ground conditions, and is disabled when the prime mover
is in higher than fifth gear. The drive is coupled to the
wheels through one-way clutches, and free wheels when
operating in the higher gears.

10,000 TPH MOBILE SIZER

CLIENT: BHP Billiton

A design audit of a 10,000 TPH Mobile Sizer, designed and

manufactured by MMD in the UK, was undertaken for BHP
Billiton. The sizer was installed at the Goonyella-Riverside Mine,
to replace the bucket wheel excavator. The audit covered all
structural elements, including fatigue and maximum load cases,
as well as issues with hydraulics and controls. Chaseling
McGiffin also weighed the 1,760 tonne machine after
fabrication.
MAJOR PROJECTS (continued)

300 TONNE SWING WHEEL LOW LOADER

The swing-wheel low-loader is a new
patented concept allowing the
advantages of a single large-tyred
axle to be achieved in a relatively
narrow vehicle while preserving a
rear-loading capability. On each side,
a wheel hub carrying dual tyres and an
oil-cooled brake is mounted on a
swing-arm. With the rear of the trailer
raised on built-in jacks, both
swing-arms can be moved from their
trailing positions behind and below the load platform to loading positions outboard of and above the load platform.
The load platform, which has a built-in ramp, can then be lowered to the ground.

EMT 6x6 MPV

The EMT 6x6 Multi-Purpose Vehicle has been designed by
Chaseling McGiffin to provide mine operators with a rough-
terrain vehicle with a high payload capability, which is capable
of performing a number of roles on a mine site. The truck has
a payload capacity of 40 tonnes and is supported on high-
flotation tyres for operation in soft conditions. Oil-Cooled
brakes are provided for low maintenance, powerful stopping
and effective retard. Components have been selected from
the Caterpillar range for ease of service and maintenance.

HAULMAX 6x4 - 115t GVM

Chaseling McGiffin was commissioned to design the
Haulmax 3770 Chassis Bowl Tipper. It is designed
specifically for high production long distance hauling
where width restrictions apply. Delivering operators lower
costs per ton along with increased vehicle traction,
braking, gradeability and operator safety. Components
have been selected from the Caterpillar range for ease of
service and maintenance.

SPECIALISED ROAD TRAILER

The 20 tonne rear-tip road trailer was designed to maximise

payload volume to carry low density scrap metal. The
chassis was also designed to provide a torsionally stiff base
to improve stability during tipping in high winds.
MAJOR PROJECTS (continued)

105t REAR DUMP TRAILER

The complete design and detailing of a 105 tonne rear
dump trailer to be used for the transport of waste products
associated with the steel making process. The
unconventional trailer layout is designed to achieve a low
load height and centre of gravity. Both the hopper and
chassis were modelled using Finite Element Analysis to
optimise the strength while minimising the structural weight.

CUSTOM REAR DUMP BODIES

& TAILGATES
In order to maximise the productivity of existing rear dump
vehicles, body designs can be optimised for different
products. The bodies shown are a high volume body designed
specifically for coal and a heavy duty body designed
specifically for hard rock. In each case the body was
designed to carry the load at the rated GVM with the optimum
load distribution between the tyres. Through the use of Finite
Element Analysis and our experience in fatigue-tolerant
design, bodies can be designed that have the attributes of
both a long service life and a low tare weight. Further weight
savings are possible if high strength formable steels are
utilised in place of extensive wear packages.

DOZER LOW LOADER

Dozer low loader is designed specifically for the transport of
dozers, notably dozers of the size range of the Caterpillar D10
and D11 range. It has a load rating of 110 tonnes, and is
available in two forms; as shown with a tandem-wheel
arrangement mounted on rocking-beam equalisers, or with a
single-axle carrying Caterpillar truck hubs with dual tyres.
This model has oil-cooled multi-plate disc brakes with spring-
applied emergency/parking brake system and the option of
recirculating oil cooling for continuous retardation on grades.

MOBILE MINER
CLIENT: PASMINCO

Audit of design, and provision of assistance in design of

underground mobile mining machine, involving close liaison
with design staff at The Robbins Company in Seattle, USA,
and Pasminco personnel, with respect to structure, gearing,
hydraulics and elements of the machine control. Involvement
continued throughout machine manufacture in Australia and
initial commissioning at Broken Hill Mine.
AREAS OF EXPERTISE
Mechanical Design
The range of design work undertaken is wide, varying from fine
mechanical devices, to large mining structures such as
draglines, weighing several thousand tonnes. The firm is very
experienced in design for high fatigue environments where use
of castings may be necessary to avoid complex welded
fabrications, as well as being experienced in design of items
likely to be subjected to high overloads.

Extensive use is made of 3D CAD modeling throughout the

design process. A complete virtual model is produced and
aspects such as clearances and locii of mechanisms can be
tested. In most cases, the 2D workshop drawings are
generated from 3D solid models, which ensures that
components will correctly fit together to form the assembly.

Design Audits and

Design/Construction Specifications
The firm is experienced in the undertaking of Design Audits,
either in a close co-operative relationship with design firms
during the course of design, or in a more independent
approach as required by the client. The firm also develops
detailed specifications for use in the construction of large
items of machinery such as draglines.

Testing Services
Chaseling McGiffin has the capability to undertake strain-
gauging as well as vibration measurements and to provide a
thorough analysis of the data, involving such techniques as
"Rainflow" analysis to assess fatigue loading, spectral
analysis of vibrations, online reduction of strain gauge rosette
data to principal stresses and strains.

Finite Element Analysis

With the latest computer software, Chaseling McGiffin can rapidly undertake finite element analysis of structures or
machinery to analyse stress or thermal problems, including non-linear analysis. Specialised Finite Element CAD is used
to develop the model, but if CAD drawings are supplied, these can be converted to a form compatible with the FEA CAD
system. Both static and dynamic analysis can be undertaken, with the latter being used to identify potential troublesome
vibration modes, and to assess the effect of structural modifications on vibration levels

Failure Analysis
Chaseling McGiffin can carry out a complete analysis of the cause of failure of most equipment. The firm has experience
with a wide range of machines, including vehicles, aircraft, opencut and underground mining machines, materials handling
equipment, and manufacturing machinery. Types of failure examined include structural overload or fatigue, failure with
gearing, failure of drives or hydraulics, or problems involving electro-mechanical systems. Fatigue analysis may include
the use of "Fracture Mechanics" to assess the potential life of items with known defects present.

Product Development
Often truly revolutionary concepts fail in the market place because of a lack of professional engineering analysis and
design. Chaseling McGiffin has considerable experience in assisting clients in the development of innovative products.
This assistance includes various forms of analysis and modelling as well as material selection and manufacturing process
advice. Computer simulation of electro-mechanical and control systems is part of our armoury.

Accident Investigation
Chaseling McGiffin can offer advice on the cause of various accidents including such as industrial accidents and vehicle
collisions. A report based on expert analysis will be prepared and if necessary expert testimony can be provided.
