1. Model Ship-Product Tanker :
Deadweight = 75,000 mt
Fully loaded with Jet A1
Max draft = 13.50m
Max Speed = 16 knots.
2. Vessel underway to Port of Chiba
Heading = 040 degrees
Initial
Initial speed = 13 knots (maneuvering speed)
Condition
3. Weather condition;
Current = 225 degrees @ 1 knot
Wind = 050 degrees @ 8 knot
Tide = 1m
Time = 1630h
4. Moderate traffic
Ensure that the following are fully understood:
1. The initial condition of the simulator exercise.
2. The specific objectives of the exercise.
3. The enumerated performance criteria.
4. Importance of the following:
situational awareness
collision avoidance
identifying if a chain of error exist
Eliminating one man error
teamwork and good communication with engine
department
Briefing model ship maneuvering characteristics
early reduction of speed
abort point and emergency anchorage
5. Importance of being calm and focus on task at hand, avoiding distraction, monitoring
progress of vessel’s transit in safe manner, parallel indexing, regular position intervals,
complying with passage plan
6. That the trainer has the right to stop the exercise when the time limit allowed exceeds
and when malfunction arises.
7. Advise trainees to be calm and focus to their task assigned and boost their confidence.
8. Emphasize that the exercise should be treated as if they are on board the vessel
9. Role assignment of trainees
10. Ask trainees if they have any other clarifications/questions.
1. Check traffic in vicinity, tides, current and weather ,navigate vessel until EOSP prior pilot
station and maintain passing distance of not less than 0.5 nm
2. Slowdown the vessel and adjust accordingly to attain the required pilot boarding speed
upon arrival at the Pilot Station at agreed time
3. Contact the pilot, state and/or clarify the following;

Boarding speed
Trainee Action
Orientation of the pilot ladder
4. Advise Engine Department re: 1 hr notice ,EOSP time, ETA to Pilot Station
5. Advise Engine Department to Slowdown to Maneuvering Speed and later to pilot
boarding speed
6. Give order to prepare pilot ladder accordingly on leeside
7. Stop vessel / take her way off if required to await pilot
8. Embark the pilot
1. Check if right scenarios are loaded and initial conditions are met before commencing the
exercise.
2. Pause the scenario and conduct the briefing.
3. Give the trainee enough time to prepare prior to starting the simulation.
4. Commence to run the simulation exercise by playing the scenario.
Trainer Action
5. Monitor the trainees thru Instructor monitoring console.
6. Remind the trainee of the time left and actions not related with the exercise.
7. Stop the exercise if necessary and inform the trainee of the reason and give further
instruction.
1. State to trainees the purpose of the debriefing exercise and encourage peer review.
2. Ask the trainee how they went about with the exercise and what where the difficulties
encountered
3. Provide the result of their action and performance using the checklist provided and a
print out of the exercise showing the track of the ship.
4. State whether the specific learning objective was achieved during the exercise
Debriefing
5. State and acknowledge the strength or the correct actions that they had demonstrated
6. Encourage them to try again if the objective was not achieved and give good hope of
success and require them to repeat the exercise.
7. Always be diplomatic in any objection of the trainee and take note of their comment
regarding the simulation exercise.
All actions executed by the trainees are in accordance with navigation and watchkeeping
Assessment
procedures per COLREG and Bridge Procedures Guide.
