Associate or Full Professor of Spanish

The University of Virginia Arts & Sciences Department of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese invites

applicants for a tenured position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor of Spanish. Field of

specialization is Peninsular Spanish literature and culture, fifteenth century to the present, subfield of

specialization open. The appointment begins with the fall term of 2019, with an anticipated start date

of August 25, 2019. Candidate will be expected to teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels and

provide service to the University, Department and professional organizations.

Research specializations lying somewhere on the arc between Early Modern and Contemporary Spanish

literature and culture, outstanding scholarship with a superior record of scholarly research and

publication commensurate to rank, an active and ongoing research agenda, evidence of excellent

teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and experience in departmental

administrative roles are required. The successful candidate must have native or near-native fluency in

Spanish and must hold a Ph.D. in the relevant field at the time of application. We are looking for a

colleague who will participate actively and fully in the life of the department.

Furthermore, the department is particularly interested in receiving applications from colleagues

conversant in other literatures and cultures of the Peninsula (e.g., Portuguese, Catalan, Galician, Latin,

Arabic, Hebrew) and/or with interests and expertise in any of the following allied fields: ethnography,

cultures in contact, Mediterranean studies, frontier history, the history of exploration, colonial studies,

the history of minority cultures and societies, comparative literature, history of ideas, life writing,

material and digital philology, film and the visual arts, theatre and performance studies, religious

studies, and gender studies.
