Moment knife-wielding man is tackled at busy shopping centre
The moment a knife-wielding man
is tackled to the ground by police in
a busy shopping centre has been
revealed in shocking footage.
Zain Shahzad was caught with
the flick knife as he confronted
another man in a packed St David’s
shopping centre in Cardiff on March
5.
CCTV footage has now been
released of the incident after the
21-year-old was jailed.
Shahzad was wrestled to the
ground by plain clothes police
officers, who were working on
another operation, and he was
arrested. The knife was recovered
at the scene.
The defendant pleaded guilty at
Cardiff Magistrates’ Court to one
count of possessing an offensive
weapon, namely a flick knife, in a
public place.
On April 6 he was jailed for eight
months at Newport Crown Court.
He will serve four months of the
sentence before being released on
licence.

During his sentencing, prosecutor
Chris Evans said Shahzad drew the
attention of two South Wales Police
officers in plain clothes who were on
patrol in the St David’s shopping
centre on the day of the offence.

He was then heard shouting
“come on, let’s go outside and I will
f*** you up.”
Officers approached Shahzad and
one of them noticed he was holding
a knife.
The court was shown CCTV
footage of the incident.
Mr Evans said: “There is a brief
moment when you can see [the
knife] but it is quite fast-moving. It
is open but it is a flick knife.”
He added: “The officer states
there were children present and
you can see that from the
footage.”
Summing up, Recorder Peter
Rouch QC said knife crime is
“becoming a problem in most major
cities”.
He said: “It is clear from the CCTV
coverage that a young couple doing
nothing walked past you and you
called them and you started
threatening the man.

prison.
Christopher Paul was sentenced
for murder in 1992 in what the judge
described at the time as a “callous”





killing.
Paul was found guilty of the
murder and robbery of former




art teacher Aneurin Caradog Wil-
liams.
Mr Williams, who was 63,
was found in pool of his own blood
at his house in Llanbradach
near Caerphilly on September 27,
1991.
His hands were tied behind his
back, a wire noose was round his
neck and his body had been brutally
beaten.
The former council chairman had
died as a result of suffocation and
pressure.

Paul, who was then 20 and living
in Trethomas, was sentenced to

His 17-year-old accomplice, Jason
Soal, then of Graig-Y-Racha, near
Machen, admitted the charges.
Soal later went on to bound a

of her three-year-old daughter dur-
ing a burglary in 2013 after being
released from prison on licence in
2004.
During the trial for Mr Williams’
murder, the jury heard how Paul and
Soal hatched a plot to rob the former
teacher at his home.
They ransacked the house, tor-
tured him and left him to die.
When sentencing Paul, Mr Justice
Simon Brown said: “You left your
victim to die shackled and gagged
with a noose round his neck.
“You knew he was elderly, living
