Challenge 8

Night Photography (Optional)

Summary
This is an optional task for the students. If the teacher is willing to, can complete this task. No
marks will be counted for their final grade.

For this task you need a tripod and good flashlight (normally used in fishing).
You need first to check the timings of moon rise and moon fal before going out to take photos.
It’s recommended to take these photos after moon fall, since stars won’t appear in the moon
season.

Instructions/Tips

Manual Mode (M)

1. Set your camera up on a tripod. The tripod keeps your camera which is crucial when
photographing at night. Any movement of your camera will create a smudge of stars
rather than a crisp image.
2. In the manual mode, Keep the shutter speed at 30 seconds. (Around 30 seconds would
be fine)
3. Take a test photo in ISO 800. If the picture doesn’t show anything increase it to the next
ISO level. An underexposed photo will be too dark and an overexposed photo will be too
bright or washed out. So try to go for neutral level of exposure.
4. It's also good idea to capture the photo in RAW.
5. To illuminate the stars you can use a torch (move the torches' light around) to help the
camera to get a better exposure. (BUT DON'T USE FLASH)
