TALLER IV – ANÁLISIS 1RA LEY SISTEMAS ABIERTOS PRIMERA PARTE

Fecha de entrega: 3 de Octubre del 2018

Note: Remember that the results must to be dedutec whit base to the first thermodynamic's law and the mass's
conservation.

1. In a single-flash geothermal power plant, geothermal water enters the flash chamber (a throttling valve) at 230°C as a
saturated liquid at a rate of 50 kg/s. The steam resulting from the flashing process enters a turbine and leaves at 20 kPa
with a moisture content of 5 percent. Determine the temperature of the steam after the flashing process and the power
output from the turbine if the pressure of the steam at the exit of the flash chamber is 1 MPa. Answer: a) 179.89 °C, 1615.19
KW

2. An adiabatic air compressor is to be powered by a direct-coupled adiabatic steam turbine that is also driving a generator.
Steam enters the turbine at 12.5 MPa and 500°C at a rate of 25 kg/s and exits at 10 kPa and a quality of 0.92. Air enters
the compressor at 98 kPa and 295 K at a rate of 10 kg/s and exits at 1 MPa and 620 K. Determine the net power delivered
to the generator by the turbine (Remember that the turbine delivers part of your power to the compressor and the
rest it delivers to the generator). Answer: 20.45 MW

3. A well-insulated turbine operating at steady state is sketched in Fig. P4.29. Steam enters at 3 MPa, 400°C, with a
volumetric flow rate of 85 m3/min. Some steam is extracted from the turbine at a pressure of 0.5 MPa and a temperature
of 180°C. The rest expands to a pressure of 6 kPa and a quality of 90%. The total power developed by the turbine is 11,400
kW. Kinetic and potential energy effects can be neglected. Determine:

(a) the mass flow rate of the steam at each of the two exits, in kg/h. Answer: 11232 kg/h, 40068 kg/h,
(b) the diameter, in m, of the duct through which steam is extracted, if the velocity there is 20 m/s. Answer: 0.284 m
4. Air is compressed at steady state from 1 bar, 300 K, to 6 bar with a mass flow rate of 4 kg/s. Each unit of mass passing
from inlet to exit undergoes a process described by pv1.27= constant. Heat transfer occurs at a rate of 46.95 kJ per kg of
air flowing to cooling water circulating in a water jacket enclosing the compressor. If kinetic and potential energy changes
of the air from inlet to exit are negligible, calculate the compressor power, in kW. Answer: 749.52 KW
