Adding Numbers

Lesson Overview/Rationale

Students will strengthen understanding of addition by diving a group into two parts, and adding them
together. Students will work in groups of three.

Curriculum Framework/Standard

Michigan K-12 Standards Mathematics:

“”Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. 1. Use addition and subtraction
within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking
apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations
with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.” (pg. 15)

Learning Objectives

 Students will be able to identify shapes.


 Students will be able to divide shapes into two groups.
 Students will be able to count each group of shapes, to find a total.

Procedure

 Teacher will present power point reviewing how to add, then demonstrate an example on the
promethean board.
 Students will get into groups of four, and each group will have a white board and markers.
 Student 1 will pick a shape, and draw as many shapes as he/she chooses up to 10.
 Student 2 will circle 2 groups of the previously drawn shapes.
 Student 3 will identify how many shapes are in each group.
 Student 4 will write the total of the shapes.
 After practice is complete, students will make a final copy of an example on a paper with
markers and turn it in.

Assessment

 I checked for understanding of addition while the students were practicing on the white boards.
After mastering the task, students will turn in a final copy project.
 Students will be graded on creativity and accuracy of addition on the final copy that is turned in.
Each group will be graded as a whole.
