Important considerations
Do you agree with the following statements?
 Develop good FUNdamental movement skills
1. Children automatically develop their  Building good psychomotor foundation
movement skills as they mature.  building blocks for more advanced movement
2. Intrinsic motivation towards leading an active and skills
lifestyle can be developed at any stage in life.  Different stages of development
3. Failure to develop fundamental & specialised  Need to be recognised and activities designed
movement skills during the early years leads to suit development stages
to frustration & failure in sports participation
 Engineering early success and encouragement
later in life.
are key

Stages of Motor Development
“The child has the developmental
‘potential’ to be at the mature stage. Understanding Growth &
Attainment will depend on factors within
the task, individual and environment”
Motor Development

Gallahue & Ozmun (2006)

Mountain of Motor Development

The Important Early Years

•Two to seven years of age
•Ideal time for children to master :
•Locomotor skills
•Manipulative skills.
•Stability skills

These movement skills develop along a continuum

of stages from the initial to elementary and to
mature stage

Classification of FMS Stages in FMS Phase

Locomotor Initial Stage
walking, running, leaping, jumping, sliding, characterized by relatively crude,
galloping, hopping, skipping uncoordinated movements.
execution not rhythmically coordinated.
Manipulative
throwing, rolling, catching, kicking & dribbling Elementary Stage
(foot), striking, bouncing & dribbling (hand), greater control over movements but appear
dribbling (implement) awkward and lacking fluidity.

Stability Mature Stage

balancing (static & dynamic), bending & curling, well coordinated, mechanically correct, and
turning, twisting, stretching, transferring weight efficient act.

Factors affecting Skill Acquisition Factors affecting Skill Acquisition

 Environment  Environment
 Task & Instruction  Group size, Space, Equipment

 Opportunities for learning  Task & Instructions

 Encouragement  Clear & simple/appropriate

 Accompanied by good demonstration

 Opportunities for learning

 Maximising participation

 Encouragement
 Lots of positives

Using stories, imageries and cartoons …

Why?

… because children love stories, they have great

imagination and they love cartoons … to make
teaching and learning fun!
