Lesson Plan in Species Diversity (Classifying Organism)

Teacher : ALVEN M. REY

Time Frame : 1 Hour
Method used : Process Approach

I. OBJECTIVE:

Classify organisms using the hierarchical taxonomic system (S8LT-IVh-20).

II. LEARNING TASK/SUBJECT MATTER:

a. Topic: CLASSIFYING ORGANISMS

b. Concept:
There are different kinds of organisms that inhabit the earth, they come in different shapes,
colors, and sizes. These organisms are found in various places from the soil, to the rivers, oceans, forests,
salty or hot places, in short in every corner of the world.
Scientist devise a way of naming and classifying organisms that they called hierarchical taxonomic
system. This system of classification or categories consist of the Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class,
Order, Family, Genus and Species.
In naming organism we use the Genus and Species category we called scientific name.

c. Skills: Observing, Clasifying/Naming, communicating and interpreting data.

d. Materials: Pictures of the animals and plants seen on the communities, manila paper, marker and coloring
materials.
e. References: DepEd Science Grade 8 Learner’s Module; Rabago, Lilian M. (2014). K to 12 Worktext 8

III. STRATEGIES/PROCEDURES:

A. Routine Check:
B. Review/Refreshment:
Direction: complete the concept map by putting each word in its correct place.

C. Unlocking of Difficulties:
1. Organism – a living thing.
2. Species - a group of closely related organisms that are very similar to each other and are
usually capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring.
3. Fertile Offspring - young of parents which can continue to reproduce.

D. Motivation:
Direction: given the symbols and its counterpart letters, can you guess what our topic for today.

E. Lesson Proper:

F. Generalization:

 Scientist use scientific name to identify and classify organism.

 They group organism according to what category it belongs: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order,
Family, Genus, and Species. (Keep Personal Computer On For Great Surfing)

G. Assessment:
Direction: in a ¼ sheet of paper answer the following.
1. Give the seven categories in classifying organism.
2. In what categories does the scientific name come from?

IV. ASSIGNMENT:
Direction: In your note book answer the following questions.
1. What are the three domain used by scientist to classify all organism? Then give the kingdom under in
this domain?

Activity: What’s in a name?
Objectives:

After performing this activity, you should be able to:

1. give the names of organisms as they are known in your community and
2. Recognize the need to have a system of classifying and naming organisms.

Materials Needed:

Pictures of different organisms

Marker and Coloring Materials
Cartolina or Manila Paper

Procedure:

1. Get pictures of organisms from your teacher.

2. With your group, discuss how each of these organisms is called in your community. Accept any
name which your group mates will give for an organism. If you know other names by which an
organism is called in another place, include them. Write them on your anchor chart.
3. Be ready when your teacher asks you to present your work to the class. Take note of how the
other groups named each of the organisms shown.
