0 OBJECTIVE

To determine the bulk density and moisture content of a given soil sample, rock and similar
materials where the reduction on mass by drying is due to loss of water. This value is
calculated by obtaining the ratio of the weight of water in a given soil mass to the weight of
soil particles and is usually expressed in percent (%).

2.0 APPARATUS

Hand Auger Sampling tube Hydraulic extruder

Knife Ruler Sampling bag

Hoe Moisture content can Temperature control oven

Electronic scale Speedy moisture content

3.0 WORKING METHOD
I. Firstly, the soil has been drilled out by using hand auger to 1m depth and has been bring
back about 5kg soil as disturb soil.

II. Secondly, the sampling tube has been connected to connecting rod.

III. Thirdly, the soil sampling tube has been pressed down into the base hole.

IV. Fourthly, 3 nos of soil sample tube had been taken from the hole as undisturbed soil and
the soil has been put in sampling bag.

V. After that, the empty moisture cans has been weighed with the lids and the can has
been number and the mass (W1)g has been recorded.
VI. Next, the soil has been taken out from soil sampling tube by using Hydraulic Extruder.

VII. The soil has been cut into 5cm length with extra carefully from each sampling tube and
the soil has been placed into a can. After that, the cap has been placed on the can and
the can with the lid and moist of soil (W2)g has been recorded.

VIII. The lid has been removed and placed underneath the can then the can has been put
into drying oven.

IX. Then, the steps as been repeated for the two other cans. There should be three
moisture cans in the oven.
X. The can has been remained in the oven for at least 24 hours.
XI. After 24 hours, the new weight og the moisture can has been weighed and recorded
with the dried soil and lid (W3)g.

5.0 DISCUSSION
The discussion should answer the following question:

1) State the value of bulk density and moisture content of soil sample
= The value of bulk density is 7612.93 kg/mᵌ and moisture content of the sample is
17.95%.

2) Based on your visual observation (color, texture, loose or dense) state the type of
soil sample.
= We have found that soil that we used in this experiment is clay soil.

6.0 CONCLUSION
The conclusion should answer the following question:
1) What were possible sources of error?
= We have conclude that the error in data retrieval and error in calculating the result
is pthe possible of error in the result of hand auger method.

2) What is the difference between disturb soil and undisturbed soil (in table).
= Based in the table, the different between disturb soil and undisturbed soil is the
disturb soil is used to make a classification and bulk density of soil while undisturbed
soil is used to shear test, permeability test and strengthening test.
