Discovering Adjectives
Modified Lesson Plan for Autism
Students will participate in class to describe various objects based on smell, look, and touch.
Grade Level: 2nd
Subject: English/Language Arts/Sensory
Length of time: 40-50 minutes
Common Core Alignment (Standards)
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.31 – Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English
grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

Objectives & Outcomes


Students will be able to use their sensory abilities to describe objects using creative adjectives.

Materials Needed
 Apples, cookies, toy cars and cotton balls.
 Adjective worksheet for those students who are able to write
 Adjective PECS for all students

Procedure
 Give each student a zip-lack bag with PECS that have adjectives
 Explain to the students what an adjective is and write the definition on the board – “An
adjective is a describing word.”
 Explain the lesson to the students. Inform them that you will be passing down one object
at a time so that they can use sight, touch, and smell to describe each object.

Body of Lesson
Modeling
 The teacher shows the students an apple and ask how many students have eaten an apple
before. Probably all of them have.
 Pass each row of students an apple and ask them to observe, feel, and smell the apple.
Students should take no more than 30 seconds to do so.
 Now ask students to choose a card from their bag with the adjectives that describe the
apple.
 When prompted, ask verbal students to say out loud the adjective they chose. Ask
nonverbal students to hold up the PECS with adjectives they chose. Ask students who are
able to write to write down the adjective they chose.
 Repeat this process with the remaining objects: cookie, cotton ball, and toy car.
 Guided Practice
 Interactive activity for whole class to participate together
 Pass out ziplock bags to all students
 Give an object to each row of students and allow them to observe, touch, and smell.
 Ask students to describe each one of these objects as a whole.
 Verbal student will be called on to say out loud adjectives that pertain to the object
 Nonverbal students will be prompted to use their PECs to describe the object.
 Students that are able to write will also be provided a worksheet will they can write down
adjectives

Independent Practice
 After this lesson, students will independently be able to use adjectives verbally or in
writing to describe objects, people, places, situations, etc.

 Have students describe the 4 objects they were given using the adjectives in their bags (3
per object)
