Study: Allowing smartphones in class lowers grades–even for students

who don’t use them

The study also showed that students who didn’t use electronic devices but attended lectures where their
use was allowed also performed worse on tests.

STEPHEN JOHNSON (//BIGTHINK.COM/COMMUNITY/STEPHEN-JOHNSON)

Students who use smartphones during lectures are less able to retain course material over
the long term, new research suggests.

The study, published in the journal Educational Psychology

(https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/01443410.2018.1489046), also showed that
students performed worse on exams even when they didn’t use smartphones or laptops
during class but attended lectures in which they were allowed.

psychology at Rutgers–New

study- nds/20180723#.W14vddhKg1I).

For the study, researchers tracked the performance of two groups of Rutgers–New Brunswick
cognitive psychology students, 118 in total, as they took the same course over one term. The
course was identical for both groups of students, but only one group was allowed to use
electronic devices during the lectures; the other wasn’t.

The majority of students used electronic devices when allowed, while only six students never
used them at all. It seemed to make a crucial difference on nal grades.

Glass et al. (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/01443410.2018.1489046)

Interestingly, the results showed that using electronic devices had no effect on students’
ability to answer questions about course material taught that same day. However, it did seem
to make students perform worse–by about 5 percent–on unit and nal exams, suggesting
that students’ ability to retain information over the long term suffers if they divide their
attention when material is being taught.

The researchers wrote that dividing your attention can hurt your long-term retention abilities
because you ultimately spend less mental resources on mnemonic activities, such as
answering quiz questions in class that will later show up on a nal exam.

Glass suggested that teachers warn students of the counterproductive effects electronics can
bring to the classroom.

“To help manage the use of devices in the classroom, teachers should explain to students the
damaging effect of distractions on retention – not only on themselves, but for the whole
class,” he said.

Fewer than 50 people worldwide have 'golden blood' — or Rh-null.

Blood is considered Rh-null if it lacks all of the 61 possible antigens in the Rh system.
It's also very dangerous to live with this blood type, as so few people have it.

Why the scientific journal industry needs oversight

What an academic sting on humanities journals really means to the rest of us. And to academia.

Helen Pluckrose, James A. Lindsay and Peter Boghossian

A trio of academics have just admitted to writing nonsense articles and getting several
of them published in scholarly journals.
The articles were created to have phony data, absurd arguments, and conclusions that
the journals' review boards would accept.
It raises questions about academic rigor in some journals, but claims that this debunks
entire branches of the humanities are unfounded.

Corporate responsibility? Don’t make me laugh.

America's #1 problem? It's gone from "We the people" to "We the shareholders". Can capitalism be better
than this?

Most companies are trying to ght on both sides of a war, says Anand Giridharadas.
They want to make a merciless pro t and also get good PR. The result? Irresponsible
company practices covered up by disingenuous 'corporate social responsibility'
initiatives.
"'Conscious capitalism.' That's a good one," he says. "The problem with our brand of
market capitalism in American in 2018 is that it's a capitalism purely driven by the needs
of shareholders." Shareholders are now America's ruling class. Citizens? The lowest
priority.
We're obsessed with innovation, but what we should be focused on is progress. The
difference? Innovation just makes things new. Progress makes people's lives better.
"Great, we have a lot of new stuff," Giridharadas says. "... in the era of innovation we've
also seen the odds of social mobility—of out-earning your parents, for example—fall
from 90 percent to 50 percent."
Public good and private greed are out of whack. The solution? Don't tear down private
enterprise, just make sure public infrastructure like schools and health care are well
supported, and that wages rise in a meaningful way.
