3. TRAINIG MANAGEMENT

3.1 Introduction

On the job Training is part of a college curriculum that aims to

train and orient students about the real work outside the school on

their chosen profession. OJT is very important not just only to teach

students about their chosen career but to show students the reality of

working. This is the most important part of a course, which the

student can measure the learning based on what they learn in

university or learn more about their specialization. It is also a way

where the students can explore and practice all the things that they

have learned and acquired their course. By OJT, students can

experience a little bit work or how the real Agricultural Engineering

works and Office works operates. It is very important for applying

jobs. Employers often asked about the OJT experience and how it is

related on the job that you are applying for. The OJT experience that

you have can land you a great job.

During their OJT at VPO Agro-Industrial Development

Corporation, the supervisors, workers and staff guide and taught the

trainees on how they will develop their skills in the different

department of the farm. They also let the trainees to experience

9

various activities that can mold the trainees not just on their

intellectual capacity but also physical. Also, they taught the trainees

on how important the personality or attitude of an individual to deal

with the real life world, on how cruel the real work is when the time

comes. They showed to the practicums that they treat every one of

them as a family but the respect is still there. Furthermore, they not

just trained the trainee to do their required task but also trained on

how to act professionally.

3.2 Narration of Experience

Agro-Forest Department

(June 20, 2018-July 2, 2018 & July 19, 2018-July 24, 2018)

On our first day on the Agro-Forest Department, Mr. Mario

Cagang, a cacao specialist from VPO-RAIDC made some introduction

about himself. After that he conducted a pre-test which is all about the

cacao from its planting to harvesting up to pest and diseases

management and to tablea preparation, storing, and making.

On the afternoon, he test again our knowledge by letting us

assemble and disassemble knapsack sprayer with total minutes of 5

for girls and 4 for boys, also by identification of the knapsack sprayer

parts with just 15 minutes preparation. He is challenging our mind to

memorize the IPDM prayer and the 10 competencies with just 10

10

minutes each. After the nerve breaking activity that day, he continue

to discuss about cacao.

The second day we are assigned to the nursery, which in there

whole day we do mixing and bagging under the heat of the sun.

The next day we do searching for scion (bud stick) and

experience wedging that if you are not taking care of your steps can

caused you harm. Also we memorize different steps in cleft grafting.

Next day is we individually graft 10 pcs of cacao with the scion

we found on the other day.

On our 6th day, we identify different cacao clone varieties

registered by NSIC (National Seed Industry Council) using cut test.

Also, we identify its individual characteristic. On the afternoon, we do

culling and height separation on the nursery.

The next morning we join the workers on their scheduled

activity, which is pod breaking. Afterwards we done beans sorting and

washing for preparation on the beans to plant.

As day past, we undergo different activities in line with cacao

during its planting to harvesting also on their pest and diseases

managements. We experience pruning, mulching, harvesting,

collecting of insect which can be found on the cacao tree and tablea

making, from fermentation, drying, roasting, molding up to storing.

11

On the last day of our training in the agro-forest department, we

take up an 800 pts exam to measure our knowledge on the cacao.

On our everyday experience on the agro-forest department, we

face difference activities that challenges not just our mind but also our

physical strengths. Also, the staff of the Apat which is the area we

conduct our daily activities concerning on the cacao, we witness how

they value each other as family. Sometimes there are some conflict

because of the level of their rank or position but still they shows

respect with each other. And unintentionally, they taught us how

important the respect and attitude you shown to your co-worker.

Engineering Department

(July 3, 2018- July 18, 2018)

On our first day on the engineering department, we are gathered

ate VPO compound for small orientation on what will be doing for the

following days.

After that, we travelled almost 2 hours, from Mahayahan to

Palibo by what they call parmol (a tractor with an implement that they

used to collect their sacked corn). In the Palibo, Engr. Jerry Palingkod

the head supervisor of the corn plantation of VPO-RAIDS made some

introduction about his self and also he discuss to us what are the
12

process they practicing and about on how they handle their corn from

land preparation up to drying.

The next day at the Palibo, Engr. Jerry let us experience on how

to harvest corn, to opening it 'til sacking. On our days on the Palibo,

we saw how the people welcoming strangers like us. They treat us like

they now us for years and also on our last day on the place. The

Renter of the land which we harvest corn, leaved as with 3 bunches of

banana as a gift.

The next day, Eng. Jerry toured us inside their rice ad adlay

miller. There, we saw different post-harvest equipment they are using

for their post-harvest process like corn shriller, mechanical dryer, corn

and rice miller, adlay miller and many more machineries that are some

are not functional inside the farm. Also he discuss to us small

information about adlay.

After the tour, sir Hil came to Engr. Jerry to ask if h can borrow

us to help for their preparation of the efficacy test.

During on the preparation of the efficacy test, we meet Dr.

OrMac the research doctor in-charge with the efficacy test and his

research aid Bryan. On the preparation, we ask to gather the different

organic components of the efficacy test. There, we discovered different

organic materials that the VPO farms are using. They use their

different waste in the farm to make fertilizer that are beneficial to the
13

farm, like the swine manure, oil palm processing sludge, rendered

chicken, pig and intestine, corn cobs, chicken dung, cacao pods, coffee

pods, rice hull and coco coir. During the preparation of the materials,

there is a bad odor occur because some of the medium like the

rendered is not fully decayed that resulting to it bad and stinky smell.

On the next day, after the preparation of the materials, we lay-

outed the field which the efficacy test will be done, we label no just

each field but also those materials and their treatment together with

some synthetic fertilizer as comparison.

As the day forward, Engr., Jerry accompany us and give us some

insights on his experience in the licensure exam in Agricultural

engineering, also some real life experience in the real word scenario.

Before we take our leave in the engineering department. Engr. Jerry

conduct an exam to measure our learnings in the engineering

department.

Livestock Department

(July 25, 2018 – August 10, 2018)

On the livestock department, Ma’am Zab lend us to Engr.

Jonathan as our supervisor during our stay in their department

because she told us that she has no knowledge about our degree
14

which is only Engr. Jonathan can relate because he has the same field

of work as ours.

Ma’am Zab give us a task to lay-out their different farm

structures building and to report our observation on their lacking

inside every building and also to take inventories on their different

machines.

On our first day of the livestock department, we measure their

feed mill and observed how they handle their product. Also we take

some observation of their operation.

After on the feed mill, we next measure the hatchery, where in

there, we witness on how they handle their eggs from receiving,

incubation, hatching up to vaccinating. We also done what we do to

feed mill which is we list their machines and take observation of their

lapses.

Next is on the layer building, there we measure their tongshe

and china building also we saw how they harvest their eggs and what

are the process and treatment they made every building. Tongshe is a

Malaysian style building with an open air ventilated building while the

china is a Chinese style building with air-condition inside. We also

take observation and inventory in each building.

Next is the poultry building, the TV Blue which is a newly stablish

building for growing broilers. Their equipment are from china and it is
15

an air-conditioned building. 3 of us take the measurements and 1 for

inventory and observation and another one for the lay-out in the

autocad.

On August 5, we meet Dr. Nervy (Vit. Med), the boss of Ma’am

Zab and Engr. Jonathan (They are not employed by the VPO-farm,

they are from the company of Dr. Nervy which VPO contacted for some

expert supervision in his farm). He was educated about BSAE because

he told to us that he is joining every year’s PSAE national convention.

There, we reported to Dr. Nervy the lay-out and our observation and

recommendation on the problem we saw in every building.

On the last 3 days of our OJT, the last building we measured is

the piggery. Which is in their piggery, it is an air-conditioned building

but we observed a lot of problems inside. We list down those problem

and made a report to those problems and recommendation to solve it

together with the lay-out of the building.

On our last day of training, we report to Engr. Jonathan about

the problems we observed inside the piggery and also we give to him

the compilations of our report from feed mill to piggery together with

the lay-out as our accomplishment report. After that he did some chit

chat with us on how relevant our on-the-job training in the real world.

After that we bid good bye to him.

16

3.3 Problems encountered and proposed

3.3.1 Technical
The VPO Farm is so much updated farm when in terms of small

scale farming. It may not be called small skilled farm because 1/3 rd

of the land of the Rosario is owned by the VPO farm. But because

they are using advance technology in their farm, some of their

workers specially those old works cannot coup-up with their high

technology system. Also the maintenance of their machines are not

been properly monitored because only few of them have

information on those machines, just those people with education

about the said machines.

Another observation we have observed is that some of their

facilities have equipment that are damage and not functional that

needed to be replace and remove to avoid any problem before,

during and after operation.

3.3.2 Administrative
The following are some problems encountered during the on-

the-job training in VPO-RAIDC

 The administration, maybe because of their large scope

of work failed to give some maintenance assistance to

every machines inside the farm.

17

 The other is they are failed to give personal protective

equipment to their workers like hard hat, mask and

gloves on feed mill, mask on piggery, layer and poultry.

Most especially those workers that are engaging on the

different bad smell inside the farm like on the organic

building that even though it is an open air building, still

the bad odor is just inside.

 Lack of workers on some field of area in livestock

department.

3.4 Conclusions

Inside the 45 days of staying at VPO Rosario Agro-Industrial

Development Corporation as a trainee, the trainees can conclude that

On the Job Training is very important in shaping future career. Thus, it

gives insights as to what real world will throw. The trainees can

conclude that they satisfactory finished the job given to them.

Socializing, managing, respect, patience and giving value to work is

the thing that they could bring in the present and for future. Moreover,

the trainings they conducted at VPO-RAIDC help them to be more self-

competence that the trainees could use for their forthcoming

professions.
18

Furthermore, VPO-RAIDC is a good training ground for shaping

the different qualities and attitude of the trainees and also during their

stay in the VPO Farm, they witness how unique their way of agriculture

(farming). They did not just help nature; by them using organic

materials and conserving energy with the use of biogas and flowing

water from the mountains, they are also helping every residence in

Rosario to be employed. Educational status is not a hindrance for a

Rosariohonon to work on their farm instead they are employing those

people with no educational background to help them on their individual

lives.

3.5 Recommendations

To the next batch of OJT, the trainees recommend that:

 Find a company or an institution that relates on their program.

 During the training, they should focus on their job in the

company or institution they would undergone.

 The next trainees should take the 360 hours of training as an

important opportunity for molding their learnings and applying

theory to the real world application.

 They should intact on their mind what are the trainings they

encounter during their training and whole heartedly accept the

critics for the supervisors.

19

 The next trainees should always pay attention during any

activities they may conduct.

 They must always learn respect and patience during the training.

 Be prepare on the changes of different activities during the

training.

To the company

 They should assign some person to monitor the status and

repair of their machineries.

 Take some of our recommendation we give on our reports on

the livestock department, especially those recommendations

concerning the health of their workers and also their livestock.

 Because of using organic, the bad smell occurs most of all the

time especially in the pig grower building, and the bad smell

travel by means of air and expose to the houses near the farm.

If possible, use a machine that eliminate the bad odor

(compressor machine) of every building not just for the

household near the farm but also for the safety of the workers

inside the farm.
