Checking fuel pump relay -J17- and activation

Special tools and workshop equipment required

 Hand-held multimeter -V.A.G 1526C-
 Voltage tester -V.A.G 1527B-
 Auxiliary measuring set -V.A.G 1594C-
 Adapter lead, 121-pin -V.A.G 1598/31-
Procedure
 Battery voltage at least 12.5 V
Fuse in fuse holder -S228-

(position 28) OK.
Remove storage compartment on

driver's side →Rep. Gr.68.
– Operate starter.
It should be possible to feel fuel
pump relay -J17- at position -6- in
13-position relay carrier pick up

and the fuel pump should run
(audible in boot - second mechanic
required).

Note
The fuel pump runs very quietly.
Where possible, avoid noisy
surroundings for this test.
A - If the relay does not pick up:
Check voltage supply of fuel pump

relay.
Check activation of fuel pump relay

→ Anchor.
B - If relay picks up but fuel pump
does not run:
Check activation of fuel pump

→ Anchor.
Check fuel pump (electrical test)

→ Chapter.
Checking voltage supply to fuel pump
relay
Detach fuel pump relay -J17- at
– position -6- in 13-position relay
carrier.
Connect voltage tester -V.A.G

1527B- as follows:

Relay socket Measure against

contact

-1- Earth

-5- Earth

– Switch on ignition.
 The LED should light up.
If LED does not light up:
– Switch off ignition.
Pull off rubber seal in direction of -
– arrow- and remove plenum
chamber cover -1- to front.
Unscrew bolts -arrows- and take
– off cover for electronics box in
plenum chamber.

Detach diesel direct injection

system relay -J322- from position -

3- in 3-position relay carrier in
electronics box.
Check for open circuit and short to
– positive or earth in the following
wiring:

13-position relay carrier, position 6 3-position relay carrier in electronics box, position 3
relay socket, contact relay socket, contact

1 5

5 5

– Repair wiring connection if necessary.

If no faults are found in the wiring:
Check voltage supply of diesel direct injection system

→Rep. Gr.23.
Checking activation of fuel pump relay
Connect adapter cable, 121-pin -
V.A.G 1598/31- to connectors of
wiring harness; do not connect

engine control unit. Connect earth
clip of adapter cable to earth (not
shown in illustration) →Rep. Gr.23.

Caution
To prevent damage to electronic
components, select appropriate
measuring range before connecting
measuring leads and observe test
requirements.

Check for open circuit and short to

– positive or earth in the following
wiring:

Relay socket -V.A.G 1598/31-

contact Socket

-3- 80

– Repair wiring connection if necessary.

Checking activation of fuel pump
 Fuel pump relay in place.
 Engine control unit connected.
Open fuse box cover on left-hand

side of instrument panel.
Take out fuse in fuse holder -S228-
– (position 28, left row, 5th large fuse
from the top).
Connect multimeter (voltage
– measurement range) between earth
and left fuse contact.
– Operate starter.
Specification: approx. battery

voltage
If specification is not obtained:
Use current flow diagram to check

wiring.
If wiring and all previous checks are
OK:
– Renew fuel pump relay -J17-.
