Golongan fenol dalam minyak atsiri merupakan golongan yang paling antseptik dalam

tanaman.Golongan ini dapat merangsang tubuh dan dapat bermanfaat dalam dosis kecil
,tetapi dosis yang besar dapat menjadi racun pada system syaraf dan iritasi pada kulit serta
ketidaknyamanan dalam pencernaan .

Minyak atsiri fenol dibagi dalam dua jenis senyawa fenol, yaitu:  Yang terdapat di alam

 Yang terbentuk sebagai hasil penyulingan destruktif dari bagian tanaman, contoh : thymol
(dalam thymus ) dan eugenol (dalam cengkeh ) .

The more important drugs containing phenol volatile oils are : thyme , clove, pimenta ,myrcia oils
,rectified birch tar oil, creosote , pine tar and juniper tar

Thyme

Thyme or common thyme consists of the dried leaves and flowering tops of thymus vulgaris linne.
Thyme yields not less than 1.5 ml of volatile thyme oil from each 100 gm of the drug.

Thyme oil is a volatile oil distilled from the flowering plant of thymus vulgaris linne or thymus zygis
linne and its variety gracilis boissier. Thyme oil yields not less than 40 per cent ,by volume of
phenols.

It is a colorless,yellow or red liquid with a characteristic ,pleasant odor and a pungent persisten
taste.

Thyme oils is flavor but it has been used as astimulant ,antiseptic and antipasmodic.the usual dose is
0,1 ml.

Thymol is a phenol,heaving the formula C10H14O. Thymol (also known as 2-isopropyl-5-

methylphenol, IPMP) is a natural monoterpene phenol derivative of cymene,
C10H14O, isomeric with carvacrol, found in oil of thyme, and extracted from Thymus
vulgaris (common thyme) and various other kinds of plants as a white crystalline substance
of a pleasant aromatic odor and strong antiseptic properties. Thymol also provides the
distinctive, strong flavor of the culinary herb thyme, also produced from T. vulgaris.
