in support of abused, neglect, injured and homeless animals

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association,
children that have mental health illnesses often go undi-
agnosed; as few as one in five children with mental health
issues seek medical help. And unfortunately, due to lack
of awareness and education, many myths about mental
health and its impact on children contribute to misinfor-
mation and misunderstanding. Here are a few pervasive
myths and the truths behind them:
Myth 1: Mental health illnesses are not real. Mental
health is just as real as getting a cold, breaking a leg, or
any other short-term or long term illness/injury. Physi-
cal illnesses and injuries have varied ranges of severity,
duration and frequency. This is the same as mental health
illnesses.
Myth 2: They will grow out of it. Children will grow out
of habits, clothing and “phases”… but mental health stays
with a person for the duration of their life. When we use
the term “grow out of,” it commonly refers to a growing
pain that is meant to be temporary. This is a dangerous
term to use regarding mental health because it attempts to
negate the fact that mental health illnesses are not valid,
preferring instead to treat it as an attention-getting mech-
anism, perhaps, or a quirk to be disregarded.

Jean Elizabeth (Hood) Lund passed away
peacefully, surrounded by family, on July
1st, 2018. Jean was the fifth of seven
children. She was born October 23, 1924
to Elizabeth (Leach) and John Ewart Hood
near Raymore, Saskatchewan. When she was
young, the family moved north to more pro-
ductive farmland near Eldersley SK where
Jean and her siblings attended the local
one-room schoolhouse until Grade 9.
In 1940 Jean moved to Winnipeg to attend
high school and live with her Aunt Clara
(Hood) and Uncle Frank Morrison. She grad-
uated from Kelvin Technical HS in 1943 and
went on to train as a nurse at the Winnipeg
General Hospital (WGH) Nursing School.
After graduation (1946) Jean worked at
WGH with the returning WWII veterans, and
specialized in surgical and emergency nurs-
ing. She moved to Montreal in 1949 to enroll

in the graduate nursing program at McGill
University and completed her Bachelor of
Nursing in 1951.
Jean returned to Winnipeg to teach at WGH
before moving west to join her family in
Nelson, BC. She worked at Kootenay Lake
District Hospital for a number of years and
helped with the transition to the “new”
hospital where she met Tommy, the love of
her life. They were married in 1959, lived in
Nelson briefly, and then moved to Salmo to
live next door to Tommy’s Mom and Dad.
Edward (Ted) and Elizabeth (Betty Anne) ar-
rived soon after. Jean took a break from her
career to be at home, but was often called
to assist with trauma care on the roads,
and in the mills and mines when the Salmo
doctors were not available. In 1970 she
began working as the Public Health Nurse
for Salmo and Area and continued in that
role until her retirement in 1997. Through
this work she is remembered by generations
of kids who grew up in Salmo.
Jean believed in volunteering and she and
Tommy worked countless hours for the
ski hill, swimming pool and golf course.
She was a longtime member of the Salmo
Hospital Auxiliary, and ran the Red Cross
Equipment Loan Cupboard for years. She
never turned down an opportunity to help,
and even well into her eighties would head
out to supply equipment to anyone who
was in need whenever a call came (24/7).
Jean and Tommy were both depression
era children, learned thrift from an early
age and were clever at using whatever
they had on hand to build or modify
things. Jean loved to knit, crochet, cook,
and sew and when her hands weren't busy
she could always be found reading. She
lived her values, gave love wherever and
whenever she could, and quietly reached
out to support community members who
were in need.
Jean was predeceased by her husband
Tommy (Thomas Emil), sister Clara (Betty)
Tennant and brothers Alex, John, Jim,
Grant and Bud Hood. She is survived by
her children Ted (Theresa) and Elizabeth;
grandchild Lisa Hammond; great-grand-
children Larena, Kennan, and Jayna; her
brother Bill and many nieces and nephews
in the Hood, Tennant, and Lund families.
Jean will be missed by all of her family and
friends but will always be in our hearts.
We love you!
The family wishes to thank all of Jean's
doctors and home care pro-
viders as well as the staff at
Castleview for their excellent
care. In memory of Jean a dona-
tion can be made to the Salmo
& District Health Auxiliary or the
Kootenay Lake Hospital Founda-
tion. A funeral service was held
in Salmo on July 12, 2018.

Myth 3: Bad parenting causes mental health illnesses.
There is no perfect recipe for parenting, and as a parent you
shouldn’t see it as a failure if your child does have a mental
health illness. Due to the variety of mental health illnesses,
it is easy to miss the signs completely and this certainly
is not caused by bad parenting. Parents with children that
have a mental illness sometimes feel guilty because they
feel responsible for missing the signs, or their child tried to
express their pain and the parent minimized the situation.
Cases similar to these reinforce the need for additional dis-
cussion of mental health issues because they are rooted not
in malice but more so in a lack of understanding.
Myth 4: Seeking treatment makes the child worse. Parents
are often hesitant in consulting medical help out of fear that
their child will receive unnecessary medication or waste time
in therapy. It is important to remember that the combination
of treatments a child may receive is specifically tailored to
them. No brain chemistry is the same. Children with mental
health illnesses may be fine with only receiving therapy, only
receiving medication, or a combination of the two.
Mental health isn’t easy and can even be worrisome
when it comes to children. It’s essential for parents to start
by having an open dialogue with their children, where
both parties are able to express how they’re feeling. Start-
ing a healthy conversation with children early on and pro-
viding a safe space may help them feel more comfortable
to seek help. For guidance on how to start the conversa-
tion or engage your child, seek out external resources
including your child’s school or doctor.

Indigenous. Abel is a Nisga’a writer from BC who is cur-

 Lost Thread
A group exhibition that brings together several regional,
provincial and National artists who are creating on the fore-
front of contemporary textiles in Canada and are practicing
in respective spaces that push the boundaries between craft/
art, and the historical/contemporary in relevant and intrigu-
ing ways. The exhibit runs from November 10 – February 24,
2019 in Gallery A of Touchstones Museum of Art and His-
tory in Nelson. Join us for the opening reception on Friday,
November 9th from 7-9pm (artist talk from 6:30-7pm).
Lost Thread features the work of Philip Hare, Bettina Matz-
kuhn, Amanda McCavour, Sylvie Roussel-Janssens, Wendy
Toogood, Anna Torma, Mathew Varey, Angelika Werth and
Robin Wiltse (artist in residence)
There will be an artist-in-residence program attached

Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund
Request for Proposals
The Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP) and Regional District of
Central Kootenay (RDCK) are seeking proposals for projects that will
benefit conservation in the rural areas around Kootenay Lake, specifi-
cally electoral areas A, D, and E within the RDCK.
The purpose of the Fund is to provide local financial support for
important projects that will contribute to the conservation of our
valuable natural areas. Kootenay Lake Local Conservation Fund
(KLLCF) funding is available for conservation projects that result in the
reduction to a known threat to biodiversity. The themes for the Fund
are water conservation, wildlife and habitat conservation, and aquatic
systems conservation.
Projects that are technically sound and effective, and provide value
for money through partnerships with other funders will be given
priority. Proponents must be a registered not-for-profit organization,
First Nations band or local government. Unqualified groups or organi-
zations may partner with a qualified organization. A Technical Review
Committee will review project proposals and make recommendations
to the RDCK for final funding approval.

8 – Fund Design and then apply using the application form provided.

 Two-Woman Crime Spree
at the Salmo Library
It’s not so much “whodunit,” as “howdunit”.
On Wednesday, October 17 from 7 – 8:30 pm, crime
fiction writers R.M. (Rachel) Greenaway and J.G. (Judy)
Toews will discuss their novels and what it took to create
them in a “Two-Woman Crime Spree,” a free event that is
part of their West Kootenay library tour.
Since 2013, when they met at a mystery writing work-
shop, Greenaway and Toews have been doing plenty of
coffee-shop brainstorming, commiserating, and celebrat-
ing of milestones. “With the release of our latest novels, it
struck us that since an important part of producing a book
is to tell the world about it, we could combine two of our
favourite things—touring and gabbing—and invite other
readers and writers into the conversation,” says Toews.
Greenaway first began writing crime fiction while
northbound on a Greyhound. Work as a court reporter in
the remoter parts of BC often took her on the road, and in
this case, on a bus in the middle of a blizzard.
Which was good, she says, as being a passenger gave her
time to kill, “and what better way to kill time than to think
up cat-and-mouse stories?” Street names became charac-
ter names as the bus passed through small towns, and the
blizzard became the setting for her first book, Cold Girl.
There are now three in the series, which includes Under-
tow and Creep, with a fourth—Flights and Falls—to be
released next spring.

Our generation is faced with repairing
and replacing 50 to 100-yr-old infra-
structure and it is not simple. I will seek
on-going matching and partnership
funding to keep costs lower, while
renewing infrastructure and maintaining
community assets. This includes com-
munity held assets such as halls, boat
launches and equestrian facilities as well
as RDCK owned assets.
Let’s Face Climate Change
Together
Climate change or extreme weather
affects us all. RDCK staff are working hard
to determine the risk to communities
from fire, flood and terrain instability. In-
terface fire readiness and emergency pre-
paredness is very important. Reducing
greenhouse gas production by offering
public transit, electric vehicle charging
stations and helping residents save mon-
ey with energy retrofits are a start.
Fire Smart, Water Conservation Ambassa-
dors, and Community Wildfire Protection
Plans are building blocks for addressing
climate change. The RDCK has signed on
to aim for the goal of 100% Renewable
Kootenays by 2050 to demonstrate our
commitment to today’s young adults
and children. I will work with Area E
residents and businesses to meet their
goals for adapting to climate change and
keeping costs affordable.
Improve Communication Reach
I receive many expressions of thanks for
posting current events, RDCK updates
and opportunities on community Face-
book Pages and e-mail lists in Blewett
and Harrop-Procter-Balfour. My goal will
be to expand my lists into smaller areas
of Area E and reach more people. The
RDCK website has a wealth of informa-
tion and is a living site. The RDCK has had
a communications manager in place for
under a year and this is a great addition.

Build Community for Youth
and Children
Area E schools have a healthy popu-
lation. More services and recreation
opportunities for children and youth
are being explored in our community
and I am super excited to be part of it.
We want to determine if a family hub
is a good option for Redfish and what
additional programs can be offered in
Blewett. Our young parents volunteer
and they deserve support. We have
already achieved a lot and we will create
partnerships to carry on.
Work with Seniors
Seniors are the bedrock of our commu-
nities. They provided everything we now
have. Aging in place is the preferred
lifestyle for area seniors. Home help
services and transportation are key to
assisting seniors to stay in their com-
munity. With 39% of Area E’s population
over 50 years old the discussion about
housing, support services and planning
are important.
Support the Business Community
Agriculture and home-based businesses
flourish in clusters in Balfour, Procter,
Ymir Road and Granite Road. They are
both large and micro. Continuing to sup-
port initiatives such as the Balfour and
Area Business and Historic Association
that provide collaboration is important.
Attracting new business is vital. I was
happy to work with our zipline company
to find a suitable location and what an
asset they have been!
Finding new ways to increase the profile
of Area E businesses is a priority. I have
placed an Area E full page ad in the Nel-
son and Area Visitor’s Guide for 3 years
during this term.
Employee attraction and retention is on
everyone’s radar. Area E is part of the
Nelson and Area Economic Partnership
so that we can address these larger
issues in a collaborative way.

There is keen interest in local food and
the RDCK is supporting agriculture with
data and practical help through many
initiatives. Water is key for all our com-
munity endeavours. Some people need
support meeting provincial government
requirements for drinking water. Others
are concerned about drought, resource
extraction and water security.
Legal cannabis is coming to the com-
munity and taking attention. Produc-
ers want recognition that they have
always had a place in the economy and
communities don’t want unintended
consequences. These are big files and
they deserve ongoing attention. I will
facilitate dialogue and work on behalf of
the community.

Living in nature has beauty and it has
challenges. Managing our impacts and
supporting positive efforts of individuals
and groups backed by reasonable policy
is a key role for all governments. De-
