 The Research Group of Dr. P.R.

Sagdeo is developing the smart materials for room

temperature magneto dielectric and multiferroic applications. From last two decades
the research community worldwide trying to understand the coupling of electric and
magnetic dipoles in multi-ferroic and magneto-dielectric system as these materials are
proposed as the potential candidate for new generation of electronic devices. In this
connection the efforts are being made by our group to induce the ferromagnetism in
high K materials by doping or to search for natural systems possess such coupling.
For example TbMnO3 Magnet-electric effect was observed at 23K, in CuO observed
at 230K. Recently we have demonstrated the magneto-dielectric effect at room
temperature in Mn doped LaGaO3.

 In addition to this our group is working on classical materials such as BaTiO 3, SrTiO3,
TiO2 etc. and trying to understand the different structure phase transitions and
variation of electronic disorder as a function of temperature as well as composition by
optical spectroscopy. Recently we have probed tetragonal to cubic transition at
393K in BaTiO3 and variation of electronic disorder near transition temperature
theoretically (by using DFT WIEN2K) as well as experimentally.

From last few years, our group is trying to understand the various phenomena’s with
the help of density functional theory. Rare-earth orthoferrites (RFeO3) are well-known for
the antiferromagnetic ground state. Recently, one of the achievements from our group in
theoretical calculations is, we have demonstrated the origin of ferromagnetism observed
in antiferromagnetic substances such as YFeO3.
