    Learning the Dominant Language

    Summary

    Nowadays, it is a necessary for everyone to learn world’s dominant language. By mastering the
    dominant language, people can interact easily with others from another country. Although
    learning the dominant language is important to everyone, there should be an attention to a
    study which said that there are some disadvantages when the children start learning the
    dominant language before they had taught their minority language. In the study, the children
    are grouped into two. The first group were just learning the dominant language until they
    finished high school, and the second group studied with the local language. At the end of the
    high school, the second group were still apparently weaker in the dominant language than the
    first group, but they can still catch up their weakness in learning the dominant language. The
    researcher, Dr Wright, said that learning through the first language actually give young students
    some benefits, and learning the dominant language too early will give them some
    disadvantages in both their first and second language. Therefore, learning the dominant
    language should be delayed in the early grades of school.
