The Nam Salu Open pit is the hard rock tin mining heritage which was operated by the largest
company on Australia, Broken Hill Proprietary Ltd (BHP), signed by the Contract of Work II
in 1970. This area had been mined by the Dutch from 1873 which was then ceased during the
World War II.
.
The mining activity started when a large amount of tin resources was founded in
Kik Karak Mountain. Then Australian Mining Company, BHP Billiton (Billiton
is the international name for Belitong) (1971-1985) made a giant excavation for
medacrater at the top of Kik Karak Mountain. The crater is as big as volcano
ones.
This deposit at the mined out area was discovered by BHP which had been not
expressed by the previous exploration program, buried 70m below the surface.
BHP believed the hard rock tin deposit on Belitong that it was associated to the
magnetite. Therefore, BHP employed aeromagnetic instrument, then, operated the
ground magnetic in 1971
Metasediment Permo-Karbon – Natural Geological Heritage The Kelapa Kampit
Formation is the most widespread rock in Belitong Island, almost three-quarters of
the island's total area. This formation is Permo-Carbon-aged with sub-units of
sandstone, silt, clay, tuff, and rhizomes. Metasediment Permo-karbon is rare and
very old age sequence in the world.
Tin is mainly used for solder. Indonesia is the world’s second
largest tin producer after China which shares of 34% of global
supply. Since 1993, Indonesia juts produces the alluvial deposit.
This is the last hard rock tin mine on Indonesia.
The open pit dimension is 230m long, 193m width and 50m high. It
was connected by tunnel to the north to maintain the water level in
the Pit which has 676m long. “Fuk Salu” means the west lode. This
operation was started from 1979 to 1993 when global tin price crisis
occurred.
