Large amount of solid waste is being generated by municipality like markets which are
seen to be unmanaged properly. The collection and disposal of wastes is not equal to the wastes
that are generated per day that results to the scattered garbage. Market areas do not only produce
a large amount of solid wastes but also different kinds of wastes. Because of this, market areas
should manage its wastes properly in order to avoid the bad effect that it could cause on the people,
environment and ecosystem.

A research study was conducted by in three main markets in Zanzibar namely

Mwnakwerekwe, Darajani and Mikunguni. The results of the study showed that the three main
markets produced the daily amount of 9,296 kg, 4,648 kg, and 830 kg, respectively. The results of
the study showed that several shortcomings in the solid waste managements were done in the
markets including low quality, inadequate storage and transportation facilities, an informal dump
site, insufficient collection frequency of solid waste, low level of awareness and education of solid
waste management and lack of enforcement of regulations by law enforcement. The study
proposes to enhance the solid waste management starting with the provision of adequate dustbins
and skips, and also including an increase of collection frequency, increasing public awareness,
involvement of private sector and separation of bio-degradable and non-biodegradable waste.

In many developing countries, the market is still the most important source of commerce
for traders and provisions for the general public. The transmission of disease in the market place
involves factors relating to the host, the agent and the environment.

A research study was conducted which examines the solid waste management in Kariakoo
market of Dar es Salaaam. The main problems that were identified are poor market design and
lack of well-organized waste storage, collection and disposal systems. Two-thirds of the waste that
are produced are coming from vegetable matter. There were proposals for improved design of
storage and collection facilities that were described. Experiments shows that wastes that the market
produces can be decomposable by composting. It suggests that a change in the design of the
covered markets and enhancements in waste handling can be useful to reduce the health hazards
in the developing countries.

Waste management is the process of managing both solid and liquid waste from the
beginning until its disposal. The problem that most of public markets encounter is managing the
wastes that it produces because of the kinds goods or products that are being sold there. It can be
notice that even though there is already waste management system in a particular place, it is still
problematic since most of it are not being effective. The system is neglected by the people because
of unawareness and less materials available that may help lessen in disposing the garbage
anywhere. With this, the research topic about evolves around the sustainability evaluation and the
strategies that may improve the waste management in the city of Tacloban specifically in the public
market.

The public market of Tacloban City is quite big since it is consisting of different sections
of goods that are sold to the market. It includes the meat section, fish section, vegetable section,
fruit section and etc. The downside of having a wider area for the public market is that there will
be also a greater waste that will be produce over time specially because it is always open for all
buyers.

The garbage disposal is one of the problems in the area. The place can still be seen to have
scattered solid waste like plastic wrappers, rotten fruits or vegetables and etc. The big factor
influences that problem is that trash bins are nowhere to see. If only there were waste storage that
are provided in the different parts of the area, this problem might be lessen. On the other hand,
liquid waste being thrown and got stuck in the place is also problematic because it causes bad
smell to the area. It may cause a disease especially for the vendors who are staying in the area. It
is also gives discomfort for the people that are buying and passing by the place.

Tacloban City have street cleaners that maintains the cleanliness of the place. However,
not all the time those people clean the area. The result of this research will help the local
government units on what is the current performance of the waste management system in the public
market. This will also give an awareness to the vendors of the place to become responsible in
maintaining and cleaning the part where their business is located. This will also give possible ways
that will help the area on how to manage the wastes that are available. There are also suggested
strategies that can give a better waste management system in the area.

Even though the city government already provided the maintenance for the waste
management of the city, it is still not enough especially in the public market area where most of
solid and liquid waste are produced. With this, the research aims to provide strategies that will
help the improvement of waste management system in the city specifically in the public market.
