PHARMACEUTICAL INORGANIC CHEMISTRY

Questions for Research:

1. State the pharmacological action of Sodium citrate when administrative, orally,
parentally and in-vitro.
 Sodium citrate a sodium salt of citric acid, used as an anticoagulant for
blood or plasma that is to be fractionated of for blood that is to be stored.

 Sodium citrate used to make the urine less acidic. Urine that is less acidic
helps the kidneys get rid of uric acid, helping to prevent gout and certain
types of kidneys stones. This medication can also prevent and treat certain
metabolic problems caused by kidney disease.

 Sodium citrate-citric-acid solution is an effective alkalinizing agent. This

product is also useful for buffering and neutralizing gastric hydrochloric
acid quickly and effectively.

2. What is the purpose of adding Sodium citrate to various pharmaceutical

preparations?
3. What is a sequestering agent?
 A sequestering agent is a substance that removes ions from a solution
system by forming a ring which does not have chemical reactions with
the ion which is removed. Sequestering agents are commonly used for
removing water hardness. They combine with calcium and magnesium
ions as well as other heavy metal ions in hard water. They form molecules
in which the ions are held so securely that they can no longer react.

4. Enumerate examples of preparations, which makes use of Sodium citrate as

sequestering agent.
