Recognition for Our Fire Department

Last week members of the Eastend & District Fire Department gave young children a tour
of the Fire Hall and made a presentation on home fire safety at the school. This was in con-
nection with Fire Prevention Week and there was a lot of effort made to dispense good in-
formation. It’s just one of the things that our Fire Dept. does during the year to help keep the
community safe.
The members of the volunteer team comprise: Fire Chief “Skip: Giverhaug, Deputy Chief
Shawn Johnston, Jason Barton, Heiko “Indy” Bargmann, Clint Lewis, Sharon Rascher,
Travis Wills, Colin Hammer, Cody Breton, Bruce Burrus, Stacey Breen, Hal Topham, Bob
Stork, Ken Wills, Tom Pearson and Linda Harrison. We owe these people a big round of
applause and a sincere thank you for their dedication and commitment on our behalf. Every
time there is a call-out they rush to put on their gear and meet whatever necessity exists.
Something about that selfless effort always put a knot in my chest. These are ordinary peo-

Last week in Obion County, Tennessee, fire fighters were called to a house fire. In that lo-
cality the fire department services have been privatized. The luckless home owner had not
paid his yearly subscription fee. Although when the firemen arrived he offered, cheque book
in hand, to pay any amount they wanted, the fire fighters stood aside and watched his home
burn to the ground. It took two hours for the fire to reach and engulf his house but they
made no effort to forestall it. They stood by unmoving. That’s what happens when you for-
get to pay your $75 annual dues. A grim experience of free enterprise being taken to ex-
