CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION TO TRAINING PROGRAM

1.1 PURPOSE OF TRAINING
The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was initiated in 1973 by the Industrial
Training Fund (ITF). This was to update practical knowledge of students in the Universities,

4
TECHNICAL REPORT UNDER TAKE AT FIRSTBANK DAURA BY NOU160224490

Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology. It was aimed at bridging the gap between the
theoretical knowledge acquired in classes and technical knowledge in the industry by providing
students with the opportunities to apply their educational knowledge in real work situations.
Over the years, SIWES has contributed immensely to building the common pool of technical and
allied skills available in the Nigeria economy which are needed for the nation’s industrial
development.
Furthermore, the place and relevance of SIWES is underscored by the fact that the scheme
contributes to improving the quality of technical skills generally available in the pool from which
employers source technical manpower
Its gives student the opportunity to blend the theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom
and with practical hands on application of knowledge required to perform work in the industry.
Also it prepares students for employment and makes the transition from school to the industry
easier after graduation.
I undertook my SIWES at FIRSTBANK OF NIGERIA LTD, DAURA BRANCH which is located at 56
Kano/Kongolam Road behind Jibrin Shopping Complex, Daura Local Government, Katsina State
from March to SEPTEMBER 2018.

6
TECHNICAL REPORT UNDER TAKE AT FIRSTBANK DAURA BY NOU160224490

Computer hardware includes the physical parts or components of a computer, such as

the central processing unit, monitor, keyboard, computer data storage, graphic card, sound
card, speakers and motherboard.[1] By contrast, software is instructions that can be stored and
run by hardware. Hardware is so-termed because it is "hard" or rigid with respect to changes or
modifications; whereas sofware is "soft" because it can be easily updated or changed.
Intermediate between software and hardware is "firmware", which is software that is strongly
coupled to the particular hardware of a computer system and thus the most difficult to change
but also among the most stable with respect to consistency of interface.

Hardware is directed by the software to execute any command or instruction. A combination of

hardware and software forms a usable computing system.

CHAPTER 2

THE TRAINING PROGRAM

2.0 DESCRIPTION OF WORKDONE

During my stay as an IT student at firstbank of Nigeria limited, Daura Branch I do my attachment

in two different departments, i.e. networking and Hardware Department.

9
TECHNICAL REPORT UNDER TAKE AT FIRSTBANK DAURA BY NOU160224490

Networking department we do different works concerning network assembling, topology and

how to work with different apparatus/equipment on the both department. Screw Drivers,
Crimple tool, Chookers, etc.

2.1 CRIMPING TOOL:

A crimping tool is a device used to conjoin two pieces of metal by deforming one or both of
them in a way that causes them to hold each other. The result of the tool's work is called
a crimp. A good example of crimping is the process of affixing a connector to the end of a cable.
For instance, network cables and phone cables are created using a crimping tool (shown below)
to join the RJ-45 and RJ-11 connectors to the both ends of either phone or CAT5 cable.

2.2 How does it work?

To use this crimping tool, each wire is first placed into the connector. Once all the wires are in
the jack, the connector with wires are placed into the crimping tool, and the handles are
squeezed together. Crimping punctures the plastic connector and holds each of the wires,
allowing for data to be transmitted through the connector.

I learned a lot of methods of how to use crimping tool, how to cut a network cable, how do
twisting and so on, Crimping tool is the measure tool that is use by an engineer to do a lot of
things on networking.

To create a network cable, you will first need the equipment listed
below.
1. Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat7 cable - This cabling can be purchased in large spindles at

stores that specialize in cabling. Cat5 cabling is the most commonly used cable used
today for networks.
2. RJ-45 connectors - These connectors can be purchased at most electronic stores and
computer stores and usually come in bulk packages. It is always a good idea to get
more than you think you need.

During my SIWES Programme I learned a lot of things must especially under that two
department.

3.1 HARDWARE DEPARTMENT

11
TECHNICAL REPORT UNDER TAKE AT FIRSTBANK DAURA BY NOU160224490

3.1 Computer System:

What does Computer System mean?

A computer system is a basic, complete and functional computer, including all the hardware and
software required to make it functional for a user.

It should have the ability to receive user input, process data, and with the processed data,
create information for storage and/or output.

A computer can process data, pictures, sound and graphics. They can solve highly complicated
problems quickly and accurately. A computer as shown in Fig. performs basically five major
computer operations or functions irrespective of their size and make. These are:

1) it accepts data or instructions by way of input,

2) it stores data,
3) it can process data as required by the user,
4) it gives results in the form of output, and
5) it controls all operations inside a computer.

12

Figure 2: Computer System

3.1.2. What I learned under above:
- I learned how to set up all the parts of the system, disassemble and reassemble .

- I also learned how to set up a CPU disassemble and reassemble

- I learned how use any USB cable on the system.

- LAN Card and its functions

- Motherboard and how its works

3.1.3 CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT

Definition - What does Central Processing Unit (CPU) mean?

13
TECHNICAL REPORT UNDER TAKE AT FIRSTBANK DAURA BY NOU160224490

The central processing unit (CPU) is the unit which performs most of the processing inside a
computer. To control instructions and data flow to and from other parts of the computer, the
CPU relies heavily on a chipset, which is a group of microchips located on the motherboard.

The CPU has two components:

 Control Unit: extracts instructions from memory and decodes and executes them

 Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU): handles arithmetic and logical operations

To function properly, the CPU relies on the system clock, memory, secondary storage, and data
and address buses.

This term is also known as a central processor, microprocessor or chip.

CPU Comprises of different parts.

Figure 3 : Parts Of CPU

Major Parts Of CPU Include but not Limited to:

1. Mother Board
2. Hard disk Drive
3. System Fan
4. Power Supply
5. Floppy Disk

14
TECHNICAL REPORT UNDER TAKE AT FIRSTBANK DAURA BY NOU160224490

6. Vedio Card
7. Processor

All of the listed above are parts of CPU and I work with each of the listed during my siwes.

3.2 NETWORKING
Under this department, I learn a lot of things from the beginning of it to all most the end.

3.2.1 TYPES OF NETWORKING CABLE WIRING

There is three types of networking Cable wiring:

1. Straight Through
2. Crossover cable wiring and
3. Rollover

Straight-Through Wired Cables

Straight-Through refers to cables that have the pin assignments on each end of the cable. In
other words Pin 1 connector A goes to Pin 1 on connector B, Pin 2 to Pin 2 ect. Straight-Through
wired cables are most commonly used to connect a host to client. When we talk about cat5e
patch cables, the Straight-Through wired cat5e patch cable is used to connect computers,
printers and other network client devices to the router switch or hub (the host device in this
instance).

15
TECHNICAL REPORT UNDER TAKE AT FIRSTBANK DAURA BY NOU160224490

Figure 4: Straight Through wired Guide

Crossover Wired Cables

Crossover wired cables (commonly called crossover cables) are very much like Straight-Through
cables with the exception that TX and RX lines are crossed (they are at opposite positions on
either end of the cable. Using the 568-B standard as an example below you will see that Pin 1 on
connector A goes to Pin 3 on connector B. Pin 2 on connector A goes to Pin 6 on connector B
ect. Crossover cables are most commonly used to connect two hosts directly. Examples would
be connecting a computer directly to another computer, connecting a switch directly to another
switch, or connecting a router to a router.

Note: While in the past when connecting two host devices directly a crossover cable was
required. Now days most devices have auto sensing technology that detects the cable and
device and crosses pairs when needed.

Figure 5: Crossover Cable Wired

Rollover Wired Cables

Rollover wired cables most commonly called rollover cables, have opposite Pin assignments on
each end of the cable or in other words it is "rolled over". Pin 1 of connector A would be
connected to Pin 8 of connector B. Pin 2 of connector A would be connected to Pin 7 of

16
TECHNICAL REPORT UNDER TAKE AT FIRSTBANK DAURA BY NOU160224490

connector B and so on. Rollover cables, sometimes referred to as Yost cables are most
commonly used to connect to a devices console port to make programming changes to the
device. Unlike crossover and straight-wired cables, rollover cables are not intended to carry data
but instead create an interface with the device.

Figure 6 : Rollover Wiring Guide

3.2.2 NETWORK TOPOLOGY

Network topology is the arrangement of the elements (links, nodes, etc.) of a communication
network. Network topology can be used to define or describe the arrangement of various types
of telecommunication networks, including command and control radio networks, industrial field
busses, and computer networks.

Network topology is the topological structure of a network and may be depicted physically or
logically. It is an application of graph theory wherein communicating devices are modeled as
nodes and the connections between the devices are modeled as links or lines between the
nodes. Physical topology is the placement of the various components of a network (e.g. device
location and cable installation), while logical topology illustrates how data flows within a
network. Distances between nodes, physical interconnections, transmission rates, or signal
types may differ between two different networks, yet their topologies may be identical. A
network’s physical topology is a particular concern of the physical layer of the OSI model.

17
TECHNICAL REPORT UNDER TAKE AT FIRSTBANK DAURA BY NOU160224490

There are different types of network topology

i. Mesh Topology

ii. Ring Topology

iii. Point To Point Topology

iv. Bus Topology

v. Star topology etc

3.2.3 NETWORKING TOOLS

Networking tools are tools or equipment that an engineer will require to set up a LAN
connection or an internet connection to the needed area.

i. Wall Socket Plate

ii. Cat5 Cable

iii. RJ 45

iv. Crimping tool

v. Chookers

vi. Switch

vii. Network Router

viii. LNB

ix. Dish

3.2.4 DISCUSSION OF SOME TOOLS

NETWORK SWITCH

A network switch (also called switching hub, bridging hub, officially MAC bridge) is a computer
networking device that connects devices together on a computer network by using packet
switching to receive, process, and forward data to the destination device.

18
TECHNICAL REPORT UNDER TAKE AT FIRSTBANK DAURA BY NOU160224490

A network switch is a multiport network bridge that uses hardware addresses to process and
forward data at the data link layer (layer 2) of the OSI model. Some switches can also process
data at the network layer (layer 3) by additionally incorporating routing functionality. Such
switches are commonly known as layer-3 switches or multilayer switches.

Figure 7 : Network Switch

LNB(Low Noise Breaker)

This LNB provides signal from satellites 61.5W, 72.7W, and 77W. Only used on the DISH 1000.4.
Three receiver output ports support direct connection to either three single-tuner receivers or
three DISH Pro Plus (dual-tuner) receivers (when used with a DP plus Separator) or a
combination.

Figure 8 : Network LNB

19
TECHNICAL REPORT UNDER TAKE AT FIRSTBANK DAURA BY NOU160224490

3.3 TRUCKING
Definition
Trucking is a technique used in data communications transmission systems to provide
many users with access to a network by sharing multiple lines or frequencies. As the
name implies, the system is like a tree with one trunk and many branches. Trucking is
commonly used in very-high-frequency (VHF) radio and telecommunication systems.

Trucking can also be defined as a network that handles multiple signals simultaneously.
The data transmitted through trucking can be audio, video, controlling signals or images.

CHAPTER FOUR
4.0 KNOWLEDGE GAINED DURING THE SIWES
The student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) exercise has contributed greatly in my
academic carrier, because I have gained a lot of experience which is very useful to my field of
study. The first advantage acquire during my industrial training programme was that i was
taught computer networking, and Hardware component.

Finally, my perception about office profession has been greatly widely broadened. It gives me
the opportunity to gain first experience of the profession even though it was not easy.

4.1 PRACTICAL ASSIGNMENT

During my stay at firstbank of Nigeria Ltd, Daura Branch I learned a lot of practical aspects. We
do practical networking.

To operate a satellite internet you need:

20
TECHNICAL REPORT UNDER TAKE AT FIRSTBANK DAURA BY NOU160224490

1. Satellite dish: It is desirable to offset. It easier to configure, since the focus is shifted;
2. Head-unit: It is fastened to the bracket plate. It is he who receives the signal;
3. Coaxial cable: Select the desired length, but so that it does not bend or pinch. To avoid
interference in your work. And the cable must be with the screen – aluminum foil for insulation;
4. DVB-card: This is the core of our installation. You can choose what you want, but if you want
to tune in with help, then you should choose Techno Trend TT-1401. The choice is not the best,
as the card format is DVB-S, and already there are more high cards DVB-S2. But nonetheless, it
can be used for the Internet;
5. Naturally, the computer in order to make it all pull together and function normally;
6. Outbound channel: Will fit all;

4.2 SATELLITE INTERNET SET UP

Let’s start.
Collecting plate probably should not be a problem. The main emphasis in collection is put on
your strength and agility. The main point we can say that to fix a plate fasteners are not
necessary, as will still focus on the satellite dish, and only the extra traffic will have to do with
relaxing the nuts. Also, when mounting the dish coaxial cable to connect with the earth, and
always at the head, the receiver will be in the house. It needs to be firmly set in place of coax
mount to the Internet where you will not need to be afraid of thunder, lightning or other natural
disasters.

Establish the DVB-card to your computer. To do this, remove the cover of your computer and
put the card into a free PCI-slot on the motherboard. Closing the housing system unit, connect
the coaxial cable coming from the dish, with the board. The compound is produced by the same
principle as in the head-unit.

NOTE: When installing, the expansion card must be completely power off and as well as the
system unit! If you have the power supply switch button, click it. If not – just pull the system
from the network.

21
TECHNICAL REPORT UNDER TAKE AT FIRSTBANK DAURA BY NOU160224490

Install the software – the driver and a program receiving data. DVB-C card is supplied driver disk.
Establish the first driver from there (for Windows XP it will be in a folder 219, for Windows Vista
or Windows Seven it is located in the BDA). After this you should put the program to receive
data. Go to the folder from which you installed the driver. There will be a Software folder – we
go into it, then go to the OEM, and then to the PCI and start the installer Setup from there. After
installation, run DVB-Data software – in the system tray (near the clock) red sad smiley will
appear. Click on it twice – setup window will appear. At the top of the window, click “New” in
the “Name of data service” write “SatGate”, in the “Take Settings From” select “Casablanca &
Streams”. Click “Apply”. Then click the “Filters” in the box where it says “Use MAC Address of
the DVB-card” rewrite or copy the address of your DVB-card.

Now we need to get an account to use the Internet. I assume that the modem you have, is
running. From here, you’ll need to get online and get the original data to adjust. As a provider,
you can choose any, settings, not much will change. For example, we choose SatGate as the
operator. To obtain an account you can go two ways – either directly or through a service
provider. You will need to pay for creating an account. To create an account through SatGate
click on the link . There we have to fill out a questionnaire. Must fill out the fields “Username”
and “E-Mail”. By e-mail, the instructions for setting up and your options will be sent. Press the
Create button after completing.

After clicking on the button “Write” will appear the following form, which must be filled. MAC-
address – write one that was released from the DVB-Data box. Connection Type: dynamic /
slonax. OS – choose the one that you should do. Dish size – 90. Click GO. In the next window
you must choose a card type that you have worth.

TechnoTrend – clone card SkyStar 2. So choose it up. Again, click GO. After that, you will receive
an e-mail that has received a file with information about the configuration of your Internet.

To update your account we need to translate to any of the purses SatGate desired amount. For
each type of exchange is your wallet. Just send the required amount at the purse, said in the
commentary to the translation of your username, obtained during registration.

22
TECHNICAL REPORT UNDER TAKE AT FIRSTBANK DAURA BY NOU160224490

Now we need to focus on the satellite dish . For this we define the satellite. Site SatGate can
choose whichever satellite. Tariffs on them all about the same, so we agree on setting up the
satellite Astra-2C. Its parameters:

1. Frequency: 11797500 kilohertz;

2. Symbol Rate: 27 500 kS / s;
3. Polarization: H (horizontal);
But before you start setting up the dish, we make some more settings by clicking on the tab
“Setup”. Everywhere we put a tick, but “Notify on program closing”, then click the button “LNB /
Satellite Settings”, where we choose “DiSEqC – none”, and in the adjacent drop-down list select
any satellite. Click “OK”, then “Apply”. Go back to the “Status / Tuner” tab, and thither to
contribute data in the satellite above.

To adjust the part, you will need a Fast SatFinder program. To adjust it is a little confusing, more
preferably adjusted using DVB-Data, but in the above mentioned program has a very important
function – you can customize the dish to the satellite, knowing the approximate position of the
plate. To do this, you just have to indicate on what satellite dish and have to adjust your
location. So, start the program, look for the satellite. Then left click the button “Dish Alignment”,
at the top of the window that appears, specify its location in degrees of latitude and longitude.
Then you can click the “Export”, and the picture with the settings will be saved. Armed with a
compass, you can go to customize a plate. Setting plate depends on its position around the axis
of its tilt and rotate the head of the receiver-converter. Upon completion of setting smile,y DVB-
Data should be green and contented, the quality of the signal must be unequivocally 100%, and
the level of 60% to ensure uninterrupted signal.

Thus, the plate we set up, let us enter the account on the website, enter username and
password received upon registration. There, check that it is correctly identified in the satellite,
which we set up the dish or not. Then choose a calling plan. To start, you can use any type of
tariff “Prepaid or Postpaid”. Choosing, for example, the rate at speeds of 128 kilobits per
second. In brackets the PID. Save the changes and open DVB-Data. Here on the Filters tab add as

23
TECHNICAL REPORT UNDER TAKE AT FIRSTBANK DAURA BY NOU160224490

PID-a one that is registered in the personal office of your account. Click the button “Apply”. All
tuning plate is now over.

To work, plates need a “SlonAx 3G” program, traffic accelerator and optimizer. Download the
latest version. After downloading, install it. Installation is intuitive, so you need to click a few
buttons to install. When you first start, you will be prompted for your username and password.
Everything else to initiate change is not worth it. Then click “OK” opens a new window. To
connect make sure that outbound channel was launched, otherwise the program will not be
able to connect. After pressing the “Connect”, program will connect, and you can safely run a
browser, messenger, mail client, and surf the Internet.

4.3 CARTRIDGE REFILLING

4.3.1 REFILL WITH INK
Step 1: What You Need

1. Printer-ink. You can buy it from a computer store. In Bangalore, you can buy it from an
ink-refill shop at the entrance of SP Road, near City market.

2. A 1ml disposable syringe. The smaller the needle, the better.

3. Your printer cartridge. My printer uses a HP56 cartridge. But the refill method is same
for most inkjet cartridges.

Step 2: The Cartridge

There is a black spot on the white-sticker covering the top-cover of the cartridge.
Underneath the black spot is a hole through which ink can be injected into the cartridge.
You can peel off the sticker to locate the hole. Or simply pierce the black spot with a
needle.

Step 3: Refill Your Printer Cartridge

24
TECHNICAL REPORT UNDER TAKE AT FIRSTBANK DAURA BY NOU160224490

Draw ink into the syringe slowly and inject it into the hole. That's it!
Some important tips:
1. The needle size is very small. If you draw ink into the syringe too quickly, you can
create air-gaps. Air gaps can block your ink cartridge. So make sure that there are no air
bubbles, before you inject ink through the hole.
2. Refilling is a messy job. Make sure you have a piece of paper/waste cloth. The image
has a clean background only to make it look good!
3. I was advised to fill the cartridge to near-capacity and not full. i.e., my cartridge's
capacity is 19ml. So I filled it to about 13ml. probably this is to prevent leakage.
4. Once, the cartridge is filled, it should be allowed to set for a few hours. This lets the
ink to settle at the bottom of the sponge. The sponge is located inside the cartridge &
cannot be seen.

4.3.2 REFILL WITH POWDER

Firstly buy the bottle of a powder refill toner, get cartridge open with screwdriver, clean the
cartridge very well, and open the refill door by your right hand site. Pour the powder inside until
it’s full, Reassemble.
