2018 ENTRANCE EXAMINATION FOR INTERNATIONAL MASTER’S PROGRAM

Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Hydrogen Energy Systems

Fluids Engineering (Group A) [10:45~12:15]

Examinee’s number Score

I. Water is discharged from a small hole (cross-sectional area of a) pierced at the bottom of a huge closed water reservoir as
shown in Fig. A. The reservoir has a valve connected to the atmosphere on the top. The inner height of the reservoir is H.
Gravitational acceleration is g. Density of water is . Atmospheric pressure is pa. Assuming the quasi-steady flow at every
moment, answer the following questions. (25 Points)
(1) When the valve on the top is fully opened, the air pressure above the water surface can be approximated by pa.
Neglecting the vena-contracta, find the discharge flow rate Q at the instant that the level of water surface from the
bottom of reservoir is h0.
(2) Fully closing the valve at the same instant of (1) (i.e. the level of water surface is h0), the discharge flow rate begins to
decrease and becomes zero as shown in Fig. B. Assuming that the vapor pressure of water is negligible and that the air
pressure above the water in the reservoir changes isothermally, find the final water surface level h. Neglect the surface
tension.

II. As shown in the figure, the rigid and heavy sphere with diameter of D is falling with the terminal velocity (constant
velocity) in the quiescent water. The wake region of the sphere has the diameter of 2D and the velocity inside the wake is
uniform with the half of the terminal velocity of the sphere. The density of water is  and that of material of the sphere is M
(>). Gravitational acceleration is g. Find the terminal velocity of the sphere V. (25 Points)
