Learn JLPT N2 Grammar: かねない

(kanenai)

Meaning: (someone) might do something, might happen

Formation:

Verb-ますstem + かねない

Example sentences:

よく目にする園芸植物の葉には、食べると命を落としかねないものもある。
The leaves of some common garden plants can be deadly if eaten.
yoku me ni suru engei shokubutsu no ha ni wa, taberu to inochi o
otoshikanenai mono mo aru.
***命を落とす (inochi o otosu): to lose one s life

それは衝撃の大発見であり、公になれば世界が変わりかねないものだ。
These are staggering breakthroughs that would change the world if they
were ever made known.
sore wa shougeki no daihakken de ari, ooyake ni nareba sekai ga
kawarikanenai mono da.

私は自分も工事現場で一緒に作業しかねないほど、あらゆる手を尽くしてホ
テルが完成間近であるような印象を与えた。
I did everything I could, short of going to work at the site myself, to
assure them that my hotel was practically finished.
watashi wa jibun mo kouji genba de issho ni sagyou shikanenai hodo,
arayuru te o tsukushite hoteru ga kansei madjika de aru you na inshou
o ataeta.
***手を尽くす (te o tsukusu): to try all possible means
***印象を与える (inshou o ataeru): to give an impression

この知識がしかるべき心得のない者の手に落ちれば、破滅的な結果を招きか
ねません。
If this secret knowledge were to fall into uninitiated hands, the results
could be devastating.
kono chishiki ga shikarubeki kokoroe no nai mono no te ni ochireba,
hametsuteki na kekka o manekikanemasen.
***手に落ちる (te ni ochiru): to fall into someone s hands

こうして制限しないと、マスコミを相手にしゃべるだけで一生が終わってし
まいかねない。
If I didn t limit myself, I could spend my life talking to the press.
kou shite seigen shinai to, masukomi o aite ni shaberu dake de isshou
ga owatte shimaikanenai.

あなたは、人口過剰が人間の魂にまで影響を及ぼしかねないことは理解して
いない。
What I fear you don t understand is that overpopulation will affect the
very soul of man.
anata wa, jinkou kajou ga ningen no tamashii ni made eikyou o
oyoboshikanenai koto wa rikai shite inai.
***影響を及ぼす (eikyou o oyobosu): to affect

工事完了についての何らかの保証がなければ、あとでひどい目にあうことに
もなりかねない。
If I don t win some guarantees about completion of construction, I ll
risk getting killed later on.
kouji kanryou ni tsuite no nanraka no hoshou ga nakereba, ato de hidoi
me ni au koto ni mo narikanenai.
***ひどい目にあう (hidoi me ni au): to have a bad time, to get hurt, to
suffer

実際に口を開くと、けんか腰にもなりかねなかったのです。ですから、一緒
に話し合えるような関係でいられるのは、とてもすばらしいことです。
If we spoke to one another, it could get pretty ugly, actually. So it s
terrific to have the kind of relationship where we can talk together.
jissai ni kuchi o hiraku to, kenkagoshi ni mo narikakenakatta no desu.
desu kara, issho ni hanashiaeru you na kankei de irareru no wa, totemo
subarashii koto desu.

明白に思える発言であっても、メディアに狂騒的な反応を生み出しかねな
い。
Even my seemingly self-evident observations can set off a feeding
frenzy in the media.
meihaku ni omoeru hatsugen de atte mo, media ni kyousouteki na
hannou o umidashikanenai.

ミナコは、いいかせぎになるのなら、自分の髪さえも売りかねなかった。
Minako would have sold the hair off her head if she could have made a
handsome profit.
minako wa, ii kasegi ni naru kara, jibun no kami sae mo
urikakenakatta.

職場でこの話題を持ち出したら、大方の労務専門弁護士は卒倒しかねない。
Raising this topic in the workplace would give most employment
lawyers a heart attack.
shokuba de kono wadai o mochidashitara, ookata no roumu senmon
bengoshi wa sottou shikanenai.

そういう風だと往々にして悲惨なことになりかねないのですが、時にはそれ
でよいこともあるんですな。
Such a method in life is often disastrous, but it is sometimes justified.
sou iu fuu da to ouou ni shite hisan na koto ni narikakenai no desu ga,
toki ni wa sore de yoi koto mo arun desu na.

資源の投入を増やさなければ、これまでの戦争努力が失敗に終わりかねな
い。
Without more resources, the war effort will likely result in failure.
shigen no tounyuu o fuyasanakereba, kore made no sensou doryoku ga
shippai ni owarikanenai.

とってもおなかがすいてカバだって食べかねないぐらい。
I m so hungry that I would eat a hippopotamus.
tottemo onaka ga suite kaba datte tabekanenai gurai.
