2.What are the different types of excitation methods of a DC generator? Draw the diagram of
each type and deduce the equation for generated voltage in each type. (10 marks)
4. a) When generators lose its residual magnetism, then how it can be made to build up?
(5 marks)
b) The emf generated by a 4 pole DC generator when driven at 1000 rpm is 400V. If the
armature has 39 slots with 16 conductors per slot, then calculate the flux per pole. (5 marks)
5. a) A 6 pole, long shunt, wave connected DC generator supplies 22KW at a terminal voltage
of 220V. The armature, series and shunt field resistances are 0.05Ω, 0.04Ω and 110Ω
respectively. The speed of armature is 1000 rpm and the flux per pole is 7.8mWb. Find i)
armature current ii) emf generated iii) number of armature conductors. (5 marks)
b) Draw and explain the internal and external characteristics of DC series generator. Draw and
explain the load characteristics of DC compound generator. (5 marks)
6.a)What is a commutator? How split rings are different from commutator? (2 marks)
b) Draw the OCC curve for a DC generator. Why the OCC curve of a DC generator starts from
some point above origin in the Y axis and not from origin? (3 marks)
c) What are the necessary conditions for building up of a DC shunt generator? (2 marks)
Field current (A) 0.5 1.0 1.5 2.0 2.5 3.0 3.5
iii) What is the critical speed when shunt field resistance is 75Ω? (3 marks)
