Basic data
Design a continuous column of a multi-storey building in consideration of the
following data.

• Partial factor: γM1 = 1.00

• Span: 7.00 m
• Column length : 3.50 / 4.00 m
• Steel grade : S355
• Section classification: Class 2
• Normal force top column: 743 kN

• Columns: UKC 203x203x46: Iy = 4568 cm4

A = 58.7 cm²

A = 76.4 cm²
• Beams: UKB 457x152x74: Iy = 32674 cm4
UKB 457x191x89: Iy = 41015 cm4

Yield strength
Steel grade S355
The maximum thickness is 11.0 mm < 40 mm, so: fy = 355 N/mm2
Note : When published, the National Annex may impose either the values of
fy from the Table 3.1 or the values from the product standard. Here
the values are the same.

Design buckling resistance of a compression member

To determine the design column buckling resistance Nb,Rd, the reduction factor
χ for the relevant buckling curve must be defined. This factor is determined
by calculation of the non-dimensional slenderness λ based on the elastic
critical force for the relevant buckling mode and the cross sectional resistance
to normal forces.

Elastic critical force for the relevant buckling mode Ncr

The critical force may be calculated from the following expression :
π 2 × EI y π 2 × 21000 × 4568
N cr, y = 2

Lcr, y 246.42

E is the Young´s modulus : E = 210000 N/mm2

Non-dimensional slenderness
The non-dimensional slenderness is given by :

N cr, y 15594
