QUARTERLY
Closing Events
SENIOR DIVISION, FIRST QUARTER, 1976
From the Sabbath School Department -
Greetings to all fellow-students:
We should again draw your attention to the format of
the lessons and remind all students that the Sabbath
School lesson should be studied each day. For this reason
the lessons are divided into five sections, usually of two
questions. There is a box to be checked daily as each part
of the lesson is studied. These cover the first five days,
Sunday to Thursday. Friday is suggested as a day to
review the whole lesson studied. The questions are
provided to help the individual in his private review of
the lesson. These questions have nothing to do with the
regular Review of the previous lesson that precedes the
Lesson Study in the classes on the Sabbath day, except
as they may be relevant to the ideas brought out by the
one taking the Review.
The Thought Questions are personal questions and not
necessarily ones that should be answered in public.
Some general discussion around them may be beneficial.
It should be always kept in mind by teachers and
students alike, that unless the lessons relate to the per-
sonal life in such a way as to effect beneficial changes,
they are of little value. Head knowledge alone will not
save us.

Lesson 1 Sabbath, January 3, 1976
KEY TEXT: "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribula-
tion, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or
peril, or sword?" (Romans 8:35).
NOTE: " ... The people of God will draw together and present to the enemy
a united front. In view of the common peril, strife for supremacy will cease;
there will be no disputing as to who shall be accounted greatest. No one of the
true believers will say: 'I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas.' The
testimony of one and all will be: 'I cleave unto Christ; I rejoice in Him as my
personal Saviour.' " -Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 401.
2. How does the partisan spirit contrast with the good example set by
the apostolic church in the beginning? Acts 4:32, 33.
NOTE: " ... One member working in right lines will lead other members to
unite with him in making intercession for the revelation of the Holy Spirit.
There will be no confusion, because all will be in harmony with the mind of the
Spirit. The barriers separating believer from believer will be broken down, and
God's servants will speak the same things. The Lord will co-operate with His
servants ." -Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 251.
. " The love of Christ, the love of our brethren, will testify to the world
that we have been with Jesus and learned of Him. Then will the message of the
third angel swell to a loud cry, and the whole earth will be lightened with the
glory of the Lord." -Ibid., p. 401.
NOTE: "When those who are uniting with the world, yet claiming great
purity, plead for union with those who have ever been the opposers of the
cause of truth, we should fear and shun them as decidedly as did Nehemiah.
-5-
Such counsel is prompted by the enemy of all good." -Prophets and Kings,
p.660.
4. What precious promise is for all who will obey? 2 Corinthians 6: 18.
NOTE: " ... The Lord gives a special truth for the people in an emergency.
Who dare refuse to publish it? He commands His servants to present the last
invitation of mercy to the world. They cannot remain silent, except at the peril
of their souls. Christ's ambassadors have nothing to do with consequences.
They must perform their duty and leave results with God." -The Great Con-
troversy, pp. 609, 610.
6. What did Jesus say was the reaction of the owner when he found one
sheep which had been lost? Luke 15:6.
NOTE: " ... But, on the other hand, when the storm of persecution really
breaks upon us, the true sheep will hear the true Shepherd's voice. Self-
denying efforts will be put forth to save the lost, and many who have strayed
from the fold will come back to follow the great Shepherd." -Testimonies,
vol. 6, p. 401.
NOTE: "The wor-ld is against us, the popular churches are against us, the
laws of the land will soon be against us. If there was ever a time when the
people of God should press together, it is now." -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 236.
8. What illustrates the unity that should exist among the people of God,
and how is it for the benefit of all? Romans 12:5.
NOTE: "Thus will the truth be brought into practical life, and thus will be
answered the prayer of Christ, uttered just before His humiliation and death:
'That they all may be one; as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they
also may be one in Us: that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me.'
John 17:21. .. ." -Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 401.

Secret of Victory o Thursday
January 1
9. If the children of God will not yield to the divisive tactics of Satan, of
what victory are they assured? Romans 8:35, 37.
NOTE: "Centuries, ages, can never lessen the efficacy of His [Christ's] aton-
ing sacrifice. Neither life nor death, height nor depth, can separate us from the
love of God which is in Christ Jesus; not because we hold Him so firmly, but
because He holds us so fast." -The Acts of the Apostles, p.553.
e. What should the people of God expect, and what must they know?
PERSONAL
What more do I need to do to be found ready and in full harmony with my
brethren?

Lesson 2 Sabbath, January 10,1976
FINAL PREPARATION
TO RECEIVE THE LATTER RAIN
KEY TEXT: "Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your
God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he
will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and
the latter rain in the first month" (Joel 2:23).
NOTE: "By prayer and confession of sin we must clear the King's highway.
As we do this, the power of the Spirit will come to us. We need the Pentecostal
energy. This will come, for the Lord has promised to send His Spirit as the all-
conquering power." -Testimonies, vol. 8, pp. 297, 298.
2. What gift promised by Jesus has yet to be seen in its fullness? John
14: 15-17.
NOTE: " ... Today you are to have your vessel purified, that it may be ready
for the heavenly dew, ready for the showers of the latter rain; for the latter rain
will come, and the blessing of God will fill every soul that is purified from
every defilement. It is our work today to yield our souls to Christ, that we may
be fitted for the time of refreshing from the presence of the Lord-fitted for the
baptism of the Holy Spirit. ... " -Evangelism, p. 702.
NOTE: " ... Under the figure of the early and the latter rain, that falls in
Eastern lands at seedtime and harvest, the Hebrew prophets foretold the
bestowal of spiritual grace in extraordinary measure upon God's church. The
outpouring of the Spirit in the days of the apostles was the beginning of the
early, or former, rain, and glorious was the result. To the end of time the
presence of the Spirit is to abide with the true church." -The Acts of the
Apostles, pp. 54, 55.
-8-
4. What is the significance of the "former rain" and "latter rain", and
when is the time of the "latter rain"? Joel 2:23.
NOTE: "But near the close of earth's harvest, a special bestowal of spiritual
grace is promised to prepare the church for the coming of the Son of man. This
outpouring of the Spirit is likened to the falling of the latter rain." -The Acts
of the Apostles, p. 55.
NOTE: "The great outpouring of the Spirit of God, which lightens the whole
earth with His glory, will not come until we have an enlightened people, that
know by experience what it means to be laborers together with God. When we
have entire, wholehearted consecration to the service of Christ, God will
recognize the fact by an outpouring of His Spirit without measure; but this
will not be while the largest portion of the church are not laborers together
with God." -Christian Service, p. 253.
8. What are we warned to expect before the outpouring of the Holy Spirit
in the latter rain? Matthew 24:24.
NOTE: " ... The enemy of souls desires to hinder this work; and before the
time for such a movement shall come, he will endeavor to prevent it by in-
troducing a counterfeit. In those churches which he can bring under his decep-
tive power he will make it appear that God's special blessing is poured out;
there will be manifest what is thought to be great religious interest.
Multitudes will exult that God is working marvelously for them, when the
work is that of another spirit. Under a religious guise, Satan will seek to ex-
tend his influence over the Christian world." -The Great Controversy, p. 464.

A Sure Foundation D Thursday
January 8
9. What is essential to enable believers to receive the Holy Spirit in
fullness? 2 Timothy 2:19, 21.
NOTE: "If our people continue in the listless attitude in which they have
been, God cannot pour upon them His Spirit. They are unprepared to co-
operate with Him. They are not awake to the situation and do not realize the
threatened danger. They should feel now, as never before, their need of
vigilance and concerted action." -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 714.
10. If the work is done under the direct control of the Holy Spirit, what
may be known of it in the face of opposition? Acts 5:39.
b. What is the significance of the two rains in connection with the Chris-
tian experience?
PERSONAL
What points in the final preparation need most attention in my life?
-10-
Lesson 3 Sabbath, January 17,1976
KEY TEXT: "As ye of the Lord rain in the time of the latter rain; so the
Lord shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain,
to everyone grass in the field" (Zechariah 10:1).
NOTE: "Miracles will be wrought, the sick will be healed, and signs and
wonders will follow the believers." -The Great Controversy, p. 612.
NOTE: "There is to be 'first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in
the ear.' There must be a constant development of Christian virtue, a constant
advancement in Christian experience. This we should seek with intensity of
desire, that we may adorn the doctrine of Christ our Saviour.
"Many have in a great measure failed to receive the former rain. They
have not obtained all the benefits that God has thus provided for them. They
expect that the lack will be supplied by the latter rain...." -Testimonies to
Ministers, pp. 506, 507.
"But there must be no neglect of the grace represented by the former rain.
Only those who are living up to the light they have will receive greater light."
-Ibid.
-11-
"It is left with us to remedy the defects in our characters, to cleanse the
soul temple of every defilement. Then the latter rain will fall upon us as the
early rain fell upon the disciples on the Day of Pentecost." -Testimonies,
vol. 5, p. 214.
4. Who alone will be delivered in the great day when Michael stands up?
Daniel 12:1.
NOTE: "The latter rain, ripening earth's harvest, represents the spiritual
grace that prepares the church for the coming of the Son of man. But unless
the former rain has fallen, there will be no life; the green blade will not spring
up. Unless the early showers have done their work, the latter rain can bring no
seed to perfection." -Testimonies to Ministers, p.506.
NOTE: " ... As the third message swells to a loud cry, and as great power
and glory attend the closing work, the faithful people of God will partake of
that glory. It is the latter rain which revives and strengthens them to pass
through the time of trouble. Their faces will shine with the glory of that light
which attends the third angeL" -Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 353.
" 'The commencement of that time of trouble,' ... does not refer to
the time when the plagues shall begin to be poured out, but to a short period
just before they are poured out, while Christ is in the sanctuary. At that time,
while the work of salvation is closing, trouble will be coming on the earth, and
the nations will be angry, yet held in check so as not to prevent the work of the
third angel. At that time the 'latter rain,' or refreshing from the presence of
the Lord, will come, to give power to the loud voice of the third angel, and
prepare the saints to stand in the period when the seven last plagues shall be
poured out." -Early Writings, pp. 85, 86.
6. What takes place when all the fruit is brought forth? Mark 4:29.
NOTE: "We must pray that God will unseal the fountain of the water oflife.
And we must ourselves receive of the living water. Let us, with contrite hearts,
-12-
pray most earnestly that now, in the time of the latter rain, the showers of
grace may fall upon us." -Testimonies to Ministers, p. 509.
8. As we see the time approaching and we have allowed the Lord to im-
part His righteousness to us, what are we told to do? Zecharias 10: 1.
NOTE: "But near the close of earth's harvest, a special bestowal of spiritual
grace is promised to prepare the church for the coming of the Son of man. This
outpouring of the Spirit is likened to the falling of the latter rain; and it is for
this added power that Christians are to send their petitions to the Lord of the
harvest 'in the time of the latter rain.' In response, 'the Lord shall make bright
clouds, and give them showers of rain.' 'He will cause to come down ... the
rain, the former rain, and the latter rain.' Zechariah 10:1; Joel 2:23." -The
Acts of the Apostles, p. 55.
NOTE: "Since this is the means by which we are to receive power, why do we
not hunger and thirst for the gift of the Spirit? Why do we not talk of it, pray
for it, and preach concerning it? The Lord is more willing to give the Holy
Spirit to those who serve Him than parents are to give good gifts to their
children." -The Acts of the Apostles, p. 50.
10. To whom did Jesus say that our Heavenly Father would willingly give
the most precious gift of all? Luke '11: 13.
NOTE: "Why do we not hunger and thirst for the gift of the Spirit, since this
is the means by which we are to receive power? Why do we not talk of it, pray
for it, preach concerning it? The Lord is more willing to give the Holy Spirit to
us than parents are to give good gifts to their children. For the baptism of the
Spirit every worker should be pleading with God. Companies should be
gathered together to ask for special help, for heavenly wisdom, that they may
know how to plan and execute wisely. Especially should men pray that God
will baptize His missionaries with the Holy Spirit." -Testimonies, vol. 8,
p.22.

Lesson 4 Sabbath, January 24, 1976
WORK OF SEPARATION
KEY TEXT: "For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness:
because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth"
(Romans 9:28).
NOTE: "The vineyard includes the whole world, and every part of it is to be
worked." -Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 24.
"When the members of the church of God do their appointed work in the
needy fields at home and abroad, in fulfillment of the gospel commission, the
whole world will soon be warned and the Lord Jesus will return to this earth
with power and great glory." -The Acts of the Apostles, p. 111.
2. As the remnant will be few in number, how will the final work be ac-
complished, and what may we know of it? Romans 9:28.
NOTE: "At the commencement of the time of trouble, we were filled with the
Holy Ghost as we sent forth and proclaimed the Sabbath more fully." -Early
Writings, p. 33.
"Thus the message of the third angel will be proclaimed. As the time
comes for it to be given with greatest power, the Lord will work through
humble instruments, leading the minds of those who consecrate themselves to
His service. The laborers will be qualified rather by the unction of His Spirit
than by the training of literary institutions...." -The Great Controversy,
p.606.
"I heard those clothed with the armor speak forth the truth in great
power." -Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 182.
NOTE: "The time of test is just upon us, for the loud cry of the third angel
has already begun in the revelation of the righteousness of Christ, the sin-
pardoning Redeemer. This is the beginning of the light cif the angel whose
-15-
glory shall fill the whole earth." -The Review and Herald, November 22,
1892.
4. Where is the first phase of the work of Revelation 18: 1 directed, and
how is it to be given? Isaiah 58:1.
NOTE: "God has raised up men to meet the necessity of this time who will
cry aloud and spare not, who will lift up their voice like a trumpet, and show
my people their transgressions, and the house of Jacob their sins. Their work is
not only to proclaim the law, but to preach the truth for this time,-the Lord
our righteousness...." -The Review and Herald, August 13, 1889.
NOTE: " ... Our message is a life-and-death message, and we must let this
message appear as it is,-the great power of God. Then the Lord will make it
eff~ctual. We are to present it in all its telling force.-Letter 209, 1899."
-Evangelism, p. 230.
6. What angel is entrusted with the work of repeating the message that
has been neglected, and what addition is included in his work?
Revelation 18:2, 3.
-16 -
8. What is the special message that will be directed to all who love the
Lord and are yet in the churches of the world? Revelation 18:4.
NOTE: "In connection with his [the angel of Revelation 18] message the call
is heard: 'Come out of her, My people.' These announcements, uniting with
the third angel's message, constitute the final warning to be given to the in-
habitants of the earth." -The Great Controversy, p.604.
NOTE: "The kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea,
and gathered of every kind; which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and
sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away."
-Christ's Object Lessons, p. 122.
10. What difference will be seen in the experience of those who have made
a daily, vital connection with Jesus and allowed Him to direct their
lives? Mark 16:16; Acts 8:37.
NOTE: "Many have a name to live while they have become spiritually
dead." -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 73.
"Here is the greatest deception that can affect the human mind;
these persons believe that they are right when they are wrong. They think that
they are doing a great work in their religious life, but Jesus finally tears off
their self-righteous covering and vividly presents before them the true picture
of themselves in all their wrongs and deformity of religious character. They are
found wanting when it is forever too late to have their wants supplied ...."
-Ibid., vol. 1, p. 417.
LESSON RECAPITULATION D Friday
January 23
a. What assurance is there that the final work will be world-wide?
b. Although the work of the third angel is widespread, what part of the
prophecy is yet unfulfilled? Why?
d. What result should be expected from both the second and the fourth
angel's messages?

Lesson 5 Sabbath, January 31, 1976
A SOLEMN WARNING
KEY TEXT: "Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of
Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them
warning from me" (Ezekiel 3:17).
..
Not an Old Established People D Sunday
January 25
1. Upon whom is the Lord counting for the finishing of the gospel work?
Isaiah 10:21.
NOTE: "Servants of God, with their faces lighted up and shining with holy
consecration, will hasten from place to place to proclaim the message from
heaven. By thousands of voices, all over the earth, the warning will be given."
- The Great Controversy, p. 612.
NOTE: "As the storm approaches, a large class who have professed faith in
the third angel's message, but have not been sanctified through obedience to
the truth, abandon their position and join the ranks of the opposition." -The
Great Controversy, p. 608.
NOTE: "I heard those clothed with the armor speak forth the truth with
great power. It had effect. Many had been bound; some wives by their
husbands, and some children by their parents. The honest who had been
prevented from hearing the truth now eagerly laid hold upon it." -Early
Writings, p. 271.
•
4. When the believers realize the promise, what will they be enabled to
do for God's children still in the nominal churches? 2 Corinthians 6:2.
NOTE: " ... By these solemn warnings the people will be stirred. Thousands
upon thousands will listen who have never heard words like these. In amaze-
ment they hear the testimony that Babylon is the church, fallen because of her
errors and sins. because of her rejection of the truth sent to her from heaven.
-18 -
As the people go to their former teachers with the eager inquiry, Are these
things so? the ministers present fables, prophesy smooth things, to soothe
their fears and quiet the awakened conscience...." - The Great Controversy,
pp. 606, 607.
NOTE: " ... Men of talent and pleasing address, who once rejoiced in the
truth, employ their powers to deceive and mislead souls. They become the
most bitter enemies of their former brethren. When Sabbathkeepers are
brought before the courts to answer for their faith, these apostates are the
most efficient agents of Satan to misrepresent and accuse them, and by false
reports and insinuations to stir up the rulers against them." -The Great Con-
troversy, p. 608.
NOTE: " ... But God still has a people in Babylon; and before the visitation
of His judgments these faithful ones must be called out, that they partake not
of her sins and 'receive not of her plagues.' Hence the movement symbolized
by the angel coming down from heaven, lightening the earth with his glory and
crying mightily with a strong voice, announcing the sins of Babylon. In con-
nection with his message the call is heard: 'Come out of Her, My people.'
These announcements, uniting with the third angel's message, constitute the
final warning to be given to the inhabitants of the earth." -The Great Con-
troversy, p. 604.
NOTE: " ... As the people go to their former teachers with the eager inquiry,
Are these things so? the ministers present fables, prophesy smooth things, to.
soothe their fears and quiet the awakened conscience. But since many refuse
to be satisfied with the mere authority of men and demand a plain 'Thus saith
the Lord,' the popular ministry, like the Pharisees of old, filled with anger as
their authority is questioned, will denounce the message as of Satan and stir
up the sin-loving multitudes to revile and persecute those who proclaim it.
-19-
"As the controversy extends into new fields and the minds of the people
are called to God's downtrodden law, Satan is astir. The power attending the
message will only madden those who oppose it. The clergy will put forth
almost superhuman efforts to shut away the light lest it should shine upon
their flocks. By every means at their command they will endeavor to suppress
the discussion of these vital questions...." -The Great Controversy, p. 607.
8. What experience is also shared by the large class who think that they
are walking in the truth? 2 Corinthians 4:4.
NOTE: " ... The selfish, the proud, and the lovers of sin are ever assailed
with doubts. Satan has ability to suggest doubts and to devise objections to
the pointed testimony that God sends, and many think it a virtue, a mark of
intelligence in them, to be unbelieving and to question and quibble. Those
who desire to doubt will have plenty of room. God does not propose to remove
all occasion for unbelief. He give evidence, which must be carefully in-
vestigated with a humble mind and a teachable spirit, and all should decide
from the weight of evidence." -Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 255.
NOTE: "In this time of persecution the faith of the Lord's servants will be
tried. They have faithfully given the warning, looking to God and to His word
alone. God's Spirit, moving upon their hearts, has constrained them to speak.
Stimulated with holy zeal, and with the divine impulse strong upon them,
they entered upon the performance of their duties without coldly calculating
the consequences of speaking to the people the word which the Lord had given
them. They have not consulted their temporal interests, nor sought to preserve
their reputation or their lives...." -The Great Controversy, pp. 608, 609.
10. How does the prophet Isaiah designate those who are unwilling to
"cry aloud" and reprove sins that are apparent? Isaiah 56: 10, 11.
NOTE: " ... The ancient men, those to whom God had given great light and
who had stood as guardians of the spiritual interests of the people, had
betrayed their trust. They had taken the position that we need not look for
miracles and the marked manifestation of God's power as in former days.
Times have changed. These words strengthen their unbelief, and they say: The
Lord will not do good, neither will He do evil. He is too merciful to visit His
people in judgment. Thus "Peace and safety" is the cry from men who will
never again lift up their voice like a trumpet to show God's people their
transgressions and the house of Jacob their sins. These dumb dogs that would
not bark are the ones who feel the just vengeance of an offended God. Men,
maidens, and little children all perish together." - Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 211.

a. What leads us to believe that the final work will not be done by a large
organization with publishing houses and facilities all around the

SUNDAY LAW
KEY TEXT: "And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free
and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their
foreheads: and that no man might buy or sell, save he that had
the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name"
(Revelation 13: 16, 17).
NOTE: " ... A refusal to obey the commandments of God, and a determina-
tion to cherish hatred against those who proclaim these commandments, leads
to the most determined war on the part of the dragon, whose whole energies
are brought to bear against the commandment-keeping people of God. 'He
causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a
mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: and that no man might buy or
sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his
name.' Revelation 13:16, 17." -Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 117.
2. What is the final decree, and what will be specifically denied? Revela-
tion 13:16, 17.
NOTE: " ... Satan is pleased to have you increase your farms and invest
your means in worldly enterprises, for by so doing you not only hinder the
cause from advancing, but by anxiety and overwork lessen your prospect for
eternal life.
"We ought now to be heeding the injunction of our Saviour: 'Sell that ye
have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in
the heavens that faileth not.' It is now that our brethren should be cutting
down their possessions instead of increasing them. We are about to move to a
better country, even a heavenly. Then let us not be dwellers upon the earth,
but be getting things into as compact a compass as possible.
"The time is comi.ng when we cannot sell at any price. The decree will
soon go forth prohibiting men to buy or sell of any man save him that hath the "
mark of the beast." -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 152.
-22-
NOTE: " ... The power attending the message will only madden those who
oppose it. The clergy will put forth almost superhuman efforts to shut away
the light lest it should shine upon their flocks. By every means at their com-
mand they will endeavor to suppress the discussion of these vital questions.
The church appeals to the strong arm of civil power, and, in this work, papists
and Protestants unite. As the movement for Sunday enforcement becomes
more bold and decided, the law will be invoked against commandment
keepers...." -The Great Controuersy, p.607.
4. What duty was taken from the church authorities and given to Caesar
according to the directive of Jesus to give unto Caesar that which is
t his and to God what belongs to Him? John 18:11; Romans 13:1,4.
NOTE: "Only a few days before this the Pharisees had tried to entrap Christ
with the question, 'Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar?' But Christ
had unveiled their hypocrisy. The Romans who were present had seen the
utter failure of the plotters, and their discomfiture at His answer, 'Render
therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's.' Luke 20:22-25." -The
Desire of Ages, p. 725.
NOTE: "John was called to behold a people distinct from those who worship
the beast or his image by keeping the first day of the week. The observance of
this day is the mark of the beast." -Testimonies to Ministers, p. 133.
6. What will be the experience of all who have let the acceptable time
pass by and come to the time ofthe decree with a work of reform yet to
be done? Isaiah 49:8; Matthew 25:11, 12.
NOTE: " ... The decree is not to be urged upon the people blindly. Everyone
is to have sufficient light to make his decision intelligently.
"The Sabbath will be the great test of loyalty, for it is the point of truth
especially controverted. When the final test shall be brought to bear upon
men, then the line of distinction will be drawn between those who serve God
and those who serve Him not." -The Great Controuersy, p. 605.
"The great final test comes at the close of human probation, when it will
be too late for the soul's need to be supplied." -Christ's Object Lessons,
p.412.

Living with Sunday Laws o Wednesday
February 4
7. What example that foreshadows the requirement to reverence Sunday
is recorded in the Old Testament-when a civil power enacted a
religious law-requiring all to conform to it? Daniel 3:1, 4-6.
NOTE: " ... The substitution of the laws of men for the law of God, the ex-
altation, by merely human authority, of Sunday in place of the Bible Sabbath,
is the last act in the drama. When this substitution becomes universal, God
will reveal Himself. He will arise in His majesty to shake terribly the earth. He t·~
will come out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the world for their ini-
quity, and the earth shall disclose her blood and shall no more cover her
slain." -Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 141.
NOTE: "To defy the Sunday laws will but strengthen in their persecution the
religious zealots who are seeking to enforce them. Give them no occasion to
call you lawbreakers. If they are left to rein up men who fear neither God nor
man, the reining up will soon lose its novelty for them, and they will see that it
is not consistent nor convenient for them to be strict in regard to the obser-
vance of Sunday. Keep right on with your missionary work, with your Bibles
in your hands, and the enemy will see that he has worsted his own cause.... "
- Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 232.
"Sunday can be used for carrying forward various lines of work that will
accomplish much for the Lord. On this day open-air meetings and cottage
meetings can be held. House-to-house work can be done." -Ibid., p. 233.
NOTE: " ... The time of God's destructive judgments is the time of mercy
for those who have had no opportunity to learn what is truth. Tenderly will the
Lord look upon them. His heart of mercy is touched; His hand is still stretched
out to save, while the door is closed to those who would not enter."
-Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 97.
10. To what class will probation be open yet a little longer? Luke 14:23, 24.
NOTE: " ... And at the commencement of the time of trouble, we were filled
with the H\?ly Ghost as we went forth and proclaimed the Sabbath more fully.
-24-
This enraged the churches and nominal Adventists, as they could not refute
the Sabbath truth. And at this time God's chosen all saw clearly that we had
the truth, and they came out and endured the persecution with us...."
-Early Writings, p. 33.
d. How may Sabbath keepers avoid conflict with some Sunday laws?
e. Explain why probation is closed for some, yet still open to others.
PERSONAL
Why do we have to wait to be compelled by circumstances to do mis-
sionary work?

Lesson 7 Sabbath, February 14, 1976
KEY TEXT: "In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will
not fear what f1esh can do unto me" (Psalm 56:4).
NOTE: "The decree which is to go forth against the people of God will be
very similar to that issued by Ahasuerus against the Jews in the time of
Esther.... The Protestant world today see in the little company keeping the
Sabbath a Mordecai in the gate." -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 450.
2. What example will be followed by the true people of God when re-
quired to transgress the law of God? Acts 4:19, 20.
NOTE: " ... They [the commandment keepers] will be threatened with fines
and imprisonment, and some will be offered positions of inf1uence, and other
rewards and advantages, as inducements to renounce their faith. But their
steadfast answer is: 'Show us from the word of God our error'-the same plea
that was made by Luther under similar circumstances." -The Great Con-
troversy, p. 607.
NOTE: " ... It has been shown that the United States is the power
represented by the beast with lamblike horns, and that this prophecy will be
fulfilled when the United States shall enforce Sunday observance, which
Rome claims as the special acknowledgment of her supremacy. But in this
homage to the papacy the United States will not be alone ...." -The Great \
Controversy, p. 579.
NOTE: "As America, the land of religious liberty, shall unite with the
papacy in forcing the conscience and compelling men to honor the false sab-
-26 -
bath, the people of every country on the globe will be led to follow her ex-
ample." -Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 18.
NOTE: "When God sends to men warnings so important that they are
represented as proclaimed by holy angels flying in the midst of heaven, He
requires every person endowed with reasoning powers to heed the message.
The fearful judgments denounced against the worship of the beast and his
image (Revelation 14:9-11), should lead all to a diligent study of the
prophecies to learn what the mark of the beast is, and how they are to avoid
receiving it... " -The Great Controversy, p. 594.
6. When did this warning commence, and when may the fulfillment be
expected? Daniel 8:14; Psalm 73:17.
NOTE: "When Christ ceases His intercession in the sanctuary, the un-
mingled wrath threatened against those who worship the beast and his image
and receive his mark (Revelation 14:9, 10), will be poured out." -The Great
Controversy, p. 627.
NOTE: "Apparently the whole "{orld is guilty of receiving the mark of the
beast. But the prophet sees a company who are not worshiping the beast, and
who have not received his mark in their foreheads or in their hands. 'Here is
the patience of the saints,' he declares; 'here are they that keep the com-
mandments of God, and the faith of Jesus' (MS 92, 1904)." -SDA Bible
Commentary, Ellen G. White Comments, vol. 7, p. 979.
8. What will identify those that profess to be Sabbath keepers from the
faithful remnant who keep it in the face of all persecution? Revelation
12:17.
NOTE: "[Revelation 12:17 quoted] We are plainly shown that two parties
will exist at the appearing of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In which
party do we wish to be found?" -Testimonies to Ministers, p. 133.

Prepare Now o Thursday
February 12
9. What experience-recorded by the Psalmist-will not only help and
comfort the believers but become their own? Psalm 56:4.
NOTE: "As the opposition rises to a fiercer height, the servants of God are
again perplexed; for it seems to them that they have brought the crisis. But
conscience and the word of God assure them that their course is right; and
although the trials continue, they are strengthened to bear them. The contest
grows closer and sharper, but their faith and courage rise with the emergency.
Their testimony is: 'We dare not tamper with God's word, dividing His holy
law; calling one portion essential and another nonessential, to gain the favor of
the world. The Lord whom we serve is able to deliver us. Christ has conquered
the powers of earth; and shall we be afraid of a world already conquered?' "
- The Great Controversy, p. 610.
10. What solemn warning is given by the a1>ostle, so that the believers
will be ready in that trying day? Hebrews 3:7, 8.
NOTE: "What are you doing, brethren, in the great work of preparation?
Those who are uniting with the world are receiving the worldly mold and
preparing for the mark of the beast. Those who are distrustful of self, who are
humbling themselves before God and purifying their souls by obeying the
truth-these are receiving the heavenly mold and preparing for the seal of God
in their foreheads. When the decree goes forth and the stamp is impressed,
their character will remain pure and spotless for eternity." -Testimonies,
vol. 5, p. 216.

Lesson 8 Sabbath, February 21, 1976
THE SEALING
KEY TEXT: "Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you,
will seek to enter in, and shall not be able" (Luke 13:24).
NOTE: "What is the seal of the living God, which is placed in the foreheads
of His people? It is a mark which angels, but not human eyes, can read."
-SDA Bible Commentary, Ellen G. White Comments, vol. 7, p. 968.
"Too late they [the enemies of God's law] see that the Sabbath of the
fourth commandment is the seal of the living God." -The Great Controversy,
p.640.
NOTE: "He who presides over His church and the destinies of nations, is
carrying forward the last work to be accomplished for this world. To His angels
He gives the commission to execute His judgments. Let the ministers awake,
let them take in the situation. The work of judgment begins at the sanctuary.
[Ezekiel 9:2 quoted]. Read Ezekiel 9:2-7." :'-Testimonies to Ministers, p. 431.
NOTE: " ... In the kingdom of God, position is not gained through
favoritism. It is not earned, nor it is received through an arbitrary bestowal. It
is the result of character. The crown and the throne are the tokens of a condi-
tion attained; they are the tokens of self-conquest through our Lord Jesus
Christ." -The Desire of Ages, p. 549.
4. How do we know that they would receive the seal of God and be part of
the 144,000? Revelation 14: 1.
NOTE: "The 144,000 were all sealed and perfectly united. On their foreheads
was written, God, New Jerusalem, and a glorious star containing Jesus' new
name." -Early Writings, p. 15.

The Promise D Tuesday
February 17
5. What promise is made to the overcomers of the seventh-or last
period-designated the Laodicean? Revelation 3:21.
NOTE: "Upon the crystal sea before the throne, that sea of glass as it were
mingled with fire,-so resplendent is it with the glory of God,-are gathered
the company that have 'gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image,
and over his mark, and over the number of his name.' With the Lamb upon
Mount Zion, 'having the harps of God,' they stand, the hundred and forty and
four thousand that were redeemed from among men; and there is heard, as the
sound of many waters, and as the sound of a great thunder, 'the voice of
harpers harping with their harps.' And they sing 'a new song' before the
throne, a song which no man can learn save the hundred and forty and four
thousand. It is the song of Moses and the Lamb-a song of deliverance. None
but the hundred and forty-four thousand can learn that song; for it is the song
of their experience-an experience such as no other company have ever
had... ." -The Great Controversy, pp. 648, 649.
"He [Jesus] gave us harps of gold and palms of victory. Here on the sea of
glass the 144,000 stood in a perfect square." -Early Writings, p. 16.
6. Who are they that will sit on thrones with the Lord in judgment, ac-
cording to the Revelation? Revelation 20:4; 15:2,3; 14:1-3.
NOTE: "Daniel declares that when the Ancient of Days came, 'judgment was
given to the saints of the Most High.' Daniel 7:22. At this time the righteous
reign as kings and priests unto God. John in the Revelation says: '1 saw
thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them.' "
-The Great Controversy, p.661.
NOTE: "'Many are called, but few are chosen.' Many hear the invitation of
mercy, are tested and proved; but few are sealed with the seal of the living
God. Few will humble themselves as a little child, that they may enter the
kingdom of heaven." -Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 50.
8. What may we know concerning the full number of those who will be
sealed? Revelation 7:4.
NOTE: "The living saints, 144,000 m number, knew and understood the
voice, ...
-30-
"The 144,000 were all sealed and perfectly united. On their foreheads were
the words God, New Jerusalem, and a glorious star containing Jesus' new
name." -Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 59.
NOTE: "Not all who profess to keep the Sabbath will be sealed. There are
many even among those who teach the truth to others who will not receive the
seal of God in their foreheads. They had the light of truth, they knew their
Master's will, they understood every point of our faith, but they had not cor-
responding works...." -Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 213, 214.
"Those who are uniting with the world are receiving the worldly mold and
preparing for the mark of the beast." -Ibid., p. 216.
10. What is the significance of "that sigh and cry" to those having a
knowledge of the present truth? Ezekiel 9:4; 2 Corinthians 12:21.
NOTE: "The class who do not feel grieved over their own spiritual declen-
sion, nor mourn over the sins of others, will be left without the seal of God."
-Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 211.
PERSONAL
How is the work of sighing and crying manifested in my life?

Lesson 9 Sabbath, February 28,1976
KEY TEXT: "For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in
the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up
upon a rock" (Psalm 27:5).
NOTE: "I saw that Satan was at work in these ways to distract, deceive, and
draw away God's people, just now in this sealing time." -Early Writings,
p.44.
2. What other things does Jesus want the believers to remember in this
important time? Hebrews 10:37.
NOTE: "The sealing time is very short, and will soon be over. Now is the
time, while the four angels are holding the four winds, to make our calling and
election sure." -Early Writings, p. 58.
"Those who would not receive the mark of the beast and his image when
the decree goes forth, must have decision now to say, Nay, we will not regard
the institution of the beast." -Ibid.,p. 67.
4. In the critical time when the decree goes forth, what response will be
seen among the sincere believers yet in the other churches? Malachi
3:17?
NOTE: "Those [commandment keepers] who are arraigned before the courts
make a strong vindication of the truth, and some who hear them are led to
take their stand to keep all the commandments of God." -The Great Con-
troversy, p. 607.
-32-
"And at this [commencement of the time of trouble] God's chosen all saw
clearly that we had the truth, and they came out and endured the persecution
with us." -Early Writings, p. 33.
" ... The time of the judgment is a most solemn period, when the Lord
gathers His own from among the tares. Those who have been members of the
same family are separated. A mark is placed upon the righteous. 'They shall
be Mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up My jewels; and I
will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.' Those who
have been obedient to God's commandments will unite with the company of
the saints in light .. ." -Testimonies to Ministers, p. 234.
The People of God o Tuesday
February 24
5. What two characteristics are specifically mentioned concerning the
true remnant? Revelation 14:12.
NOTE: " ... But as he [John] looked with intense interest he beheld the
company of God's commandment-keeping people. They had upon their
foreheads the seal of the living God, and he said: 'Here is the patience of the
saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of
Jesus .' " -Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 15.
" But looking beyond the smoke and din of the battle, he [John]
beheld a company upon Mount Zion with the Lamb, having, instead of the
mark of the beast, the 'Father's name written in their foreheads.' And again he
saw 'them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and
over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, hav-
ing the harps of God's and singing the song of Moses and the Lamb." -Ibid.,
vol. 5, pp. 752, 753.
6. What evidence shows clearly that there is only one class of believers
at the end, separate from those who profess but who are willing to
compromise? Revelation 12:17.
NOTE: "An angel returning from the earth announces that his work is done;
the final test has been brought upon the world, and all who have proved
themselves loyal to the divine precepts have received 'the seal of the living
God.' " -The Great Controversy, p. 613.
NOTE: "In the issue of the contest all Christendom will be divided into two
great classes-those who keep the commandments of God and the faith
of Jesus, and those who worship the beast and his image and receive his
mark. Although church and state will unite their power to compel 'all, both
-33-
small and great, rich and poor, free and bond' (Revelation 13:16), to receive
'the mark of the beast,' yet the people of God will not receive it. The prophet of
Patmos beholds 'them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his
image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea
of glass, having the harps of God' and singing the song of Moses and the Lamb.
Revelation 15:2,3." -The Great Controuersy, p. 450.
NOTE: "Let us strive with all the power that God has given us to be among
the hundred and forty-four thousand (RH March 9, 1905)." -SDA Bible
Commentary, Ellen G. White Comments, vol. 7, p. 970.
"Satan was trying his every art to hold them where they were, until the
sealing was past, until the covering was drawn over God's people, and they left
without a shelter from the burning wrath of God, in the seven last plagues.
God has begun to draw this covering over His people, and it will soon be drawn
over all who are to have a shelter in the day of slaughter...." -Early
Writings, p. 44.
10. What has God promised for the sealed ones in the time of trouble?
Psalm 27:5; 91:14, 15.
NOTE: "I saw that God will in a wonderful manner preserve His people
through the time of trouble." -Testimonies, vol. I, p. 353.
b. When is the final opportunity for those who have not rejected the last
message of warning?
-34-
d. What is the significance of the parable telling of the dividing of sheep
from goats?
e. How should the remnant respond if they expect God to fulfill His
promises in that time of need?
PERSONAL
In the light of the closeness of the final test, have I reached the high stan-
dard of God's requirements to qualify as one of the 144,000 sealed?

Lesson 10 Sabbath, March 6, 1976
AN OBEDIENT PEOPLE
KEY TEXT: "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this
rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not
prevail against it" (Matthew 16:18).
NOTE: "Of the remnant people of God it is written, 'The dragon was wroth
with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which
keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.'
Rev. 12:17." -The Desire of Ages, p.398.
NOTE: " ... The people of God, symbolized by a holy woman and her
children, were represented as greatly in the minority. In the last days only a
remnant still existed. Of these John speaks as they 'which keep the com-
mandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ' (ST Nov. 1,
1899).'; -SDA Bible Commentary, Ellen G. White Comments, vol. 7, p. 972.
NOTE: "The battle raged. Victory alternated from side to side. Now the
soldiers of the cross gave way, 'as when a standardbearer fainteth.' Isaiah
10:18. But their apparent retreat was but to gain a more advantageous
position." -Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 41.
4. Although battles have been won and lost, what is seen as the final out-
come of the conflict? Song of Solomon 6:4, 10.
NOTE: "At last the victory was gained. The army following the banner with
the inscription, 'The commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus, 'was
gloriously triumphant." -Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 41.

A Spiritual Conflict D Tuesday
March 2
5. Again, with what do the people of God have to battle, and what do
they need for protection and victory? Ephesians 6:11.
NOTE: "If the curtain could be rolled back, and each one could discern the
constant activities of the heavenly family to preserve the inhabitants of the
earth from Satan's seductive wiles, lest in their careless attitude they should
be led astray through satanic strategy, they would lose a large degree of their
self-confidence and self-assurance. They would see that the armies of heaven
are in continual warfare with satanic agencies, to obtain victories in behalf of
those who do not sense their danger, and who are passing on in unconscious in-
difference (MS 32, 1900)." -SDA Bible Commentary, Ellen G. White
Comments, vol. 6, p. 1120.
6. How does the apostle Paul explain the true nature of the conflict and
the opposing forces? Ephesians 6:12.
NOTE: "God's servants are to put on every piece of the Christian armor. We
are not wrestling simply with human foes. God calls upon every Christian to
enter the warfare and fight under His leadership, depending for success on the
grace and help of Heaven." -Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 219.
NOTE: "We have the commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus
Christ, which is the spirit of prophecy. Priceless gems are to be found in the
word of God." -Testimonies to Ministers, p. 114.
8. When the wrath of the dragon brings the church to compromise, what
provokes him to make war with the remnant, when both profess the
same two major doctrines? Psalm 37:32; Proverbs 15:29.
-37-
NOTE: "The remnant church will be brought into great trial and distress.
Those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus will feel the
ire of the dragon and his hosts. Satan numbers the world as his subjects, he
has gained control of the apostate churches; but here is a little company that
are resisting his supremacy. If he could blot them from the earth, his triumph
would be complete...." -Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 231.
NOTE: " ... The church will yet see troublous times. She will prophesy in
sackcloth. But although she must meet heresies and persecutions, although
she must battle with the infidel and the apostate, yet by the help of God she is
bruising the head of Satan. The Lord will have a people as true as steel, and
with faith as firm as the granite rock. They are to be His witnesses in the
world, His instrumentalities to do a special, a glorious work in the day of His
preparation." -Testimonies, vol. 4, pp. 594, 595.
d. What differenciates the remnant from the church professing the same
doctrines?
PERSONAL
Is there anything in my life that would hinder my church qualifying for
the protection of God?

Lesson 11 Sabbath, March 13,1976
KEY TEXT: "No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and
every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt
condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and
their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord" (Isaiah 54:17).
NOTE: " ... The last great conflict between truth and error is but the final
struggle of the long-standing controversy concerning the law of God. Upon this
battle we are now entering-a battle between the laws of men and the precepts
of Jehovah, between the religion of the Bible and the religion of fable and
tradition." -The Great Controversy, p.582.
NOTE: "The Sabbath will be the great test of loyalty, for it is the point of
truth especially controverted." -The Great Controversy, p.605.
NOTE: " ... A power from beneath is leading men to war againt Heaven.
Human beings have confederated with satanic agencies to make void the law
of God. The inhabitants of the world are fast becoming as the inhabitants of
the world in Noah's day, who were swept away by the Flood, and as the in-
habitants of Sodom, who were consumed by fire from heaven. The powers of
Satan are at work to keep minds diverted from eternal realities. The enemy
has arranged matters to suit his own purposes...." -Testimonies, vol. 9,
p.43.
"Till the close of time there will be a conflict between the church of God
and those who are under the control of evil angels." -The Acts of the
Apostles, p. 219.
-39-
4. Why will those who have walked with the Lord for a season be the
most effective agents for Satan? Luke 11:24-26.
NOTE: "At the present time, ... Satan is putting forth desperate efforts to
ensnare the world. He is devising many plans to occupy minds and to divert
attention from the truths essential to salvation. In every city his agencies are
busily organizing into parties those who are opposed to the law of God." - The
Acts of the Apostles, p. 219.
Victory o Tuesday
March 9
5. What is signified by "the mark, or the name of the beast, or the
number of his name"? Revelation 13:17.
NOTE: "Sundaykeeping is not yet the mark of the beast, and will not be
until the decree goes forth causing men to worship this idol sabbath." -SDA
Bible Commentary, Ellen G. White Comments, vol. 7, p. 977.
6. What was revealed to the prophet John concerning those who ob-
tained the victory in the final conflict? Revelation 15:2.
NOTE: " ... While John was shown the last great struggles of the church
with earthly powers, he was also permitted to behold the final victory and
deliverance of the faithful. He saw the church brought into deadly conflict
with the beast and his image, and the worship of that beast enforced on pain of
death. But looking beyond the smoke and din of the battle, he beheld a com-
pany upon Mount Zion with the Lamb, having, instead of the mark of the
beast, the 'Father's name written in their foreheads.' And again he saw 'them
that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over, his image, and over his
mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the
harps of God' and singing the song of Moses and the Lamb." -Testimonies,
vol. 5, pp. 752, 753.
NOTE: "The teacher is to make the truth clear and forcible to the understand-
ing and to the conscience. The word is a two-edged sword, that cuts both
ways. It does not tread as with soft, slippered feet." -SDA Bible Commen-
tary, Ellen G. White Comments, vol. 5, p. 1147.
8. What is said of the church that Christ will present before the universe
as the fruits of His labor and the sacrifice that He made? Ephesians
5:27.
-40-
NOTE: " ... Then the church which our Lord at His coming is to receive to
Himself will be a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such
thing.' Ephesians 5:27." -The Great Controversy, p.425.
NOTE: " ... As the third message swells to a loud cry, and as great power
and glory attend the closing work, the faithful people of God will partake of
that glory. It is the latter rain which revives and strengthens them to pass
through the time of trouble. Their faces will shine with the glory of that light
which attends the third angel." -Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 353.
NOTE: " ... At our happy, holy state the wicked were enraged, and would
rush violently up to lay hands on us to thrust us into prison, when we would
stretch forth the hand in the name of the Lord, and they would fall helpless to
the ground. Then it was that the synagogue of Satan knew that God had loved
us, who could wash one another's feet, and salute the brethren with a holy
kiss, and they worshiped at our feet." -Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 59.
b. What people are the most effective agents of Satan, and why?
PERSONAL
How could the mark of the beast or the number of his name affect me?

CLOSE OF PROBATION
KEY TEXT: "He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is
filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be
righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still"
(Revelation 22:11).
NOTE: "" .. As angel returning from the earth announces that his work is
done; the final test has been brought upon the world, and all who have proved
themselves loyal to the divine precepts have received 'the seal of the living
God.' Then Jesus ceases His intercession in the sanctuary abov.e. He lifts His
hands and with a loud voice says, 'It is done;' and all the angelic host layoff
their crowns as He makes the solemn announcement: [Revelation 22:11
quoted.] Every case has been decided for life or death... ." -The Great Con-
troversy, p. 613.
NOTE: "When Christ shall cease His work as mediator in man's behalf, then
this time of trouble will begin." -Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 201.
NOTE: "The righteous and the wicked will still be living upon the earth in
their mortal state-men will be planting and building, eating and drinking, all
unconscious that the final, irrevocable decision has been pronounced in the
sanctuary above." -The Great Controversy, p.491
While the man of business is absorbed in the pursuit of gain, while the
pleasure lover is seeking indulgence, while the daughter of fashion is arranging
her adornments-it may be in that hour the Judge of all the earth will
pronounce the sentence: 'Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found
wanting.' Daniel 5:27." -Ibid.

4. When Jesus says "It is finished," to what does He refer at this time,
and to what did He refer when He made the same statement on
Calvary? John 17:4; 19:30.
NOTE: "All heaven had united with Jesus, as they heard the fearful words,
'It is done. It is finished.' The plan of salvation had been accomplished ..."
-Early Writings, p. 281.
NOTE: "Among those to whom bitter disappointment will come at the day of
final reckoning will be some who have been outwardly religious, and who ap-
parently lived Christian lives. But self is woven into all they do...
"But Christ says, 'I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from
me.' ...
"There is no discussion; the time for that is past. The irrevocable sentence
has been pronounced. They are shut out from heaven by their own unfitness
for its companionship. (Read Matt. 7:24-27.) -Letter 91, 1904." -Selected
Messages, Book 1, pp. 81, 82.
NOTE: " ... Parents were bitterly reproaching their children, and children
their parents, brothers their sisters, and sisters their brothers. Loud, wailing
cries were heard in every direction, 'It was you who kept me from receiving the
truth which would have saved me from this awful hour.' The people turned
upon their ministers with bitter hate and reproached them, saying, 'You have
not warned us. You told us that all the world was to be converted, and cried,
Peace, peace, to quiet every fear that was aroused. You have not told us of this
hour; and those who warned us of it you declared to be fanatics and evil men,
who would ruin us.' .. ." -Early Writings, p. 282.
NOTE: "Those professed Christians who come up to that last fearful conflict
unprepared will, in their despair, confess their sins in words of burning
anguish, while the wicked exult over their distress. These confessions are of
the same character as was that of Esau or of Judas. Those who make them, la-
ment the result of transgression, but not its guilt. They feel no true contrition,
no abhorrence of evil. They acknowledge their sin, through fear of
punishment .. ." -The Great Controversy, pp. 620, 621.

8. What parable of Jesus makes it plain that there is no possibility of any
second chance and that the separation is eternally fixed? Luke 16:26.
NOTE: " ... They [the vast multitude of the wicked ones resurrected] are to
have no new probation in which to remedy the defects of their past lives.
Nothing would be gained by this. A lifetime of transgression has not softened
their hearts. A second probation, were it given them, would be occupied as was
the first in evading the requirements of God and exciting rebellion against
Him." -The Great Controversy, p. 662. .
The Time of Trouble o Thursday

9. What description is given ofthe time when the angels cease to hold the
four winds and urge them on? Revelation 7:1; Jeremiah 30:7.
NOTE: "The people of God will then be plunged into those scenes of afflic-
tion and distress described by the prophet as the time of Jacob's trouble."
-The Great Controversy, p. 616.
10. What parallels are there between the experience of Jacob coming
toward Esau and that of the remnant after the close of probation?
Genesis 32:6, 7, 24.
b. Explain why Christ says "It is finished," when time will continue for
a period.
d. Why is there no possibility for a second chance for those who are not
saved?
e. Why does God permit His people to pass through the time of trouble?
KEY TEXT: "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we
may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need"
(Hebrews 4:16).
NOTE: "Those who had not prized God's Word were hurrying to and fro,
wandering from sea to sea, and from the north to the east, to seek the Word of
the Lord. Said the angel, 'They shall not find it. There is a famine in the land;
not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but for hearing the words of the
Lord.' What would they not give for one word of approval from God! but no,
they must hunger and thirst on.... " -Early Writings, p. 281.
2. Although there will still be many Bibles and preachers, what will the
people do? Why? Amos 8: 12.
NOTE: " ... Day after day have they [those who had not prized God's Word]
slighted salvation, prizing earthly riches and earthly pleasure higher than any
heavenly treasure or inducement. They have rejected Jesus and despised His
saints. The filthy must remain filthy forever.' " -Early Writings, pp. 281,
282.
NOTE: "I saw that the four angels would hold the four winds until Jesus'
work was done in the sanctuary, and then will come the seven last plagues."
-Early Writings, p. 36.
NOTE: "The present is a solemn, fearful time for the church. The angels are
already girded, awaiting the mandate of God to pour their vials of wrath upon
the world. Destroying angels are taking up the work of vengeance; for the
-45-
Spirit of God is gradually withdrawing from the world." -SDA Bible
Commentary, Ellen G. White Comments, vol. 7, p. 983.
NOTE: " ... These [seven last] plagues enraged the wicked against the
righteous; they thought that we had brought the judgments of God upon
them, and that if they could rid the earth of us, the plagues would then be
stayed. A decree went forth to slay the saints, which caused them to cry day
and night for deliverance. This was the time of Jacob's trouble. Then all the
saints cried out with anguish of spirit, and were delivered by the voice of
God...." -Early Writings, pp. 36, 37.
6. What will be the trust of the people of God at this time, and what is
one of the promises that they will claim? Psalm 91:7, 8.
NOTE: " ... I saw a writing, copies of which were scattered in different parts
of the land, giving orders that unless the saints should yield their peculiar
faith, give up the Sabbath, and observe the first day of the week, the people
were at liberty after a certain time to put them to death. But in this hour of
trial the saints were calm and composed, trusting in God and leaning upon His
promise that a way of escape would be made for them. In some places, before
the time for the decree to be executed, the wicked rushed upon the saints to
slay them; but angels in the form of men of war fought for them...." -Early
Writings, pp. 282, 283.
NOTE: "The people of God will not be free from suffering; but while
persecuted and distressed, while they endure privation and suffer for want of
food they will not be left to perish. That God who cared for Elijah will not pass
by one of His self-sacrificing children. He who numbers the hairs of their head
will care for them, and in time of famine they shall be satisfied. While the
wicked are dying from hunger and pestilence, angels will shield the righteous
and supply their wants. To him that 'walketh righteously' is the promise:
'Bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.' 'When the poor and needy
seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will
hear them, I the God oflsrael will notforsake them.' Isaiah 33:15, 16; 41:17."
-The Great Controversy, p. 629.

8. What should believers be doing while these things have not yet come
to pass? Amos 4: 12.
NOTE: "As a people who believe in Christ's soon coming, we have a message
to bear, -'Prepare to meet thy God.' " -Gospel Workers, p.55.
NOTE: "Now, while our great High Priest is making the atonement for us, we
should see to become perfect in Christ." -The Great Controversy, p.623.
NOTE: "Let everyone examine himself to see whether he be in the faith. Let
the people of God repent and be converted, that their sins may be blotted out
when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. Let
them ascertain wherein they have failed to walk in the way that God has
marked out, wherein they have failed to purify their souls by taking heed to
His counsels." -Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 103.
b. How are the final judgments on the wicked revealed in the Scrip-
tures?
c. What experience, repeated many times from the very beginning, will
be re-enacted on an even greater scale?
PERSONAL
Although we are familiar with much of the information and the promises
and the warnings, what can I do to make them more of a reality in my life
and the lives of others?
