NOTE. "We cannot with safety take part in any political
scheme. We cannot labour to please men who will use their
influence to repress religious liberty, and to set in operation

Sunday as the Sabbath. The first day of the week is not a
day to be reverenced. It is a spurious sabbath, and the mem-
bers of the Lord's family cannot participate with the men
who exalt this day, and violate the law of God by trampling

NOTE. "The names of Daniel and his companions were
changed to names representing Chaldean deities. The king
did not compel the Hebrew youth to renounce their faith in
favour of idolatry, but he hoped to bring that about gradual-
ly. By giving them nameS significant of idolatry, byl bringing
them daily into close association with idolatrous customs,
and under the influence of the seductive rites of heathen wor-
ship, he hoped to induce them to renounce the religion of
their nation, and to unite witilthe worship of the Babylon-

chance. They obtained their knowledge by the faithful use
of their power, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. .They
placed themselves in connection with the source of all wis-
dom, making the knowledge of God the foundation of their
education. In faith ·they prayed for wisdom, and they lived
their prayers. They placed themselves where God could bless
them. They dvoided that which would weaken their pow-
• ers, and improved every opportunity to become intelligent in

God and man. Through the fidelity to the principles of
temperance shown by the Hebrew youth, God is speaking to
the youth of today The Hebrew worthies, were men of
like passions with ourselves; yet, notwithstanding the seduc-
tive influences of the court of Babylon, they stood firm, be-
cause they depended upon a strength that is infinite. The
spirit that possessed Daniel, the youth of today may have;

and passions, the agencies of the All-merciful one, silently,

ANSWER. "In the history of the nations the student of
God's word may behold the literal fulfilment of divine pro-
phecy. Babylon, shattered and broken at last, passed' away
because in prosperity its rulers had regarded themselves as
independent of God, and had ascribed the glory of their king-
dom to human achievement. The Medo-Persian realm was

visited by the wrath of heaven because in it God's law had
been trampled underfoot . . . The Kingdoms that followed
were even more base and corrupt; and these sank lower
and lower in the scale of moral worth." (P. K. 501-502.)
