Heating and Cooling Investigation: Salt Water

Aim:

What will happen to salt water as the temperature is changed?

Materials

 Water
 Salt
 Beakers
 Freezer
 Electric hot plate/Bunsen burner
 Teaspoons
 Tape/labels

Hypothesis (What you think will happen):

Variables:

Controlled (What you keep the same):

Independent (What you change):

Steps:

1. Fill 3 beakers with 100mL of water.

2. Put 1 teaspoon of salt in each beaker and stir until it is dissolved.
3. Label each beaker. One will be cooled, one will stay the same, one will be heated.
4. Place the cooling beaker into the freezer.
5. Place the beaker which is staying at room temperature somewhere safe.
6. Heat the last beaker on the electric stove until all the water has boiled off and observe what
happens. Be extremely careful when heating.
7. When the cooling beaker has frozen remove it from the freezer.
8. Compare the 3 beakers.
