APPENDIX 1
APPENDIX 2

I along with some friends and colleagues, pioneered the first Science Café in Pakistan. Our
purpose is to provide such environs where science could be discussed in a casual and
informal manner. We aspire to help people not only understand but also cherish the joy of
'knowing'.

Our desire is to make people understand that science is nothing but a way of living life,
where in you do not pass through life just like that, but you also think as you pass, and be
curious.

Curiosity of knowledge, nourishes the soul.

Timeline:

1. In March 2012, we founded the COMSATS Science Society. We invited Dr. A.Q. Khan at
COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) Islamabad and held a discussion session
titled “Science for social change”. Dr. Munir A. Rashid (notable student of Prof. Abdus Salam)
was also invited at this discussion session. These speakers motivated students about the
pleasures of studying science.

2. We also arranged an Astronomy Night and a painting competition on the theme of

science, for the students. In the Astronomy Night, hobbyist astronomers of Islamabad
helped students view the Moon and Venus.

3. This society, then in Fall 2012, invited Dr. Samar Mubarakmand at CIIT.

4. On 29th September 2012, we tried to reach the masses by arranging Science Café at a civil
venue called Kuch Khaas (kuchkhaas.org), which is a non-profit organization. Students,
teachers and professionals from various universities and organizations like NESCOM
attended the session. Report of our first event was published in the international
sciencecafes.org website. Please see http://sciencecafes.org/stories/science-cafe-makes-its-
debut-pakistan.
We intend to extend this activity in all cities of Pakistan and beyond.

5. On 29th November 2012, the Science Café celebrated the birth month of Iqbal where I
presented a brief talk title “Iqbal’s views on science”. The report of this event is published in
the January 2013 issue of the Global Science magazine.

6. On 9th February 2013, Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy gave a lecture on the basics of cosmology and
big bang at Science Cafe.

7. On 23rd January 2014, the Science Café team went on an intellectually interesting 90
minutes’ walk with Dr. Isa Daudpota at F-9 park Islamabad.
