Sub Genres:
Biopic Films (or biographical pictures) are a sub-genre of the larger drama and epic film genres,

and although they reached a hey-day of popularity in the 1930s, they are still prominent to this

day. 'Biopics' is a term derived from the combination of the words "biography" and "pictures."

Chick flick is a slang term for the film genre dealing mainly with love and romance which is

targeted to a female audience.

A mystery film is a genre of film that revolves around the solution of a problem or a crime. It

focuses on the efforts of the detective, private investigator or amateur sleuth to solve the

mysterious circumstances of an issue by means of clues, investigation, and clever deduction.

A disaster film or disaster movie is a film genre that has an impending or ongoing disaster as its

subject and primary plot device. Such disasters include natural disasters such

as floods, earthquakes, tsunamis or asteroid collisions, accidents such as shipwrecks or airplane

crashes, or calamities like worldwide disease pandemics.

Fantasy films are films that belong to the fantasy genre with fantastic themes,

usually magic, supernatural events, mythology, folklore, or exotic fantasy worlds.

Film Noir a style or genre of cinematographic film marked by a mood of pessimism, fatalism, and

menace. The term was originally applied (by a group of French critics) to American thriller or

detective films made in the period 1944–54 and to the work of directors such as Orson Welles,

Fritz Lang, and Billy Wilder.

Guy Films composed of macho films that are often packed with sophomoric humor, action,

cartoon violence, competition, mean-spirited putdowns and gratuitous nudity and sex. Gal films

or 'chick' flicks are their counterpart for females.


Melodrama Films are a sub-type of drama films, characterized by a plot to appeal to the

heightened emotions of the audience. Melodrama, a combination of drama and melos (music),

literally means "play with music."

A road movie is a film genre in which the main characters leave home on a road trip, typically

altering the perspective from their everyday lives.

Romance films or romance movies are romantic love stories recorded in visual media for

broadcast in theaters and on TV that focus on passion, emotion, and the affectionate romantic

involvement of the main characters and the journey that their genuinely strong, true and pure

romantic love takes them through dating, courtship or marriage.

A sports film is a film genre that uses sport as the theme of a film. It is a production in which

a sport, sporting event, athlete (and their sport), or follower of sport (and the sport they follow)

are prominently featured, and which depend on sport to a significant degree for their plot

motivation or resolution.

A superhero film, superhero movie, or superhero motion picture is a film that is focused on the

actions of one or more superheroes: individuals who usually possess superhuman abilities relative

to a normal person and are dedicated to protecting the public.

Supernatural film is a genre that centers around supernatural elements, such as ghosts, gods,

goddesses, and miracles. Supernatural films deal with the unknown questions of life; therefore,

they tend to incorporate religious elements into the plot.

Thriller is a broad genre of literature, film and television, having numerous, often overlapping

subgenres. Thrillers are characterized and defined by the moods they elicit, giving viewers

heightened feelings of suspense, excitement, surprise, anticipation and anxiety.
