 Your  Monster  to  Read  Task  Analysis  

 
1.0    Open  the  website  Teach  Your  Monster  to  Read  
1.1    Open  an  internet  browser  (I  will  be  using  Safari)  
1.2    Type  www.teachyourmonstertoread.com  in  the  web  address  bar  
1.3    Click  enter  
2.0    Sign  up  for  a  new  class  account  
2.1    Click  the  orange  button  that  says  “Start  your  reading  adventure  now”  
2.2    Enter  your  e-­‐mail  address  
2.3    Enter  your  password  
2.4    Click  the  orange  button  that  says  “Sign  up  and  start  playing”  
3.0    Add  students  to  your  account  
  3.1    Click  the  orange  button  that  says  “Add  Players”  
  3.2    Type  a  students  name  into  the  box  
  3.3    Select  what  game  level  they  will  begin  on  from  the  drop  down  menu  
  3.4    Click  the  orange  “Add  player”  button  
  3.5    Click  the  orange  “Add  players”  button  to  add  more  students  
  3.6    Repeat  steps  3.2  –  3.5  until  all  students  have  been  added  
4.0    Print  password  cards  for  students  
  4.1    Click  orange  “Password  Cards”  button  
  4.2    Select  choice  of  uppercase  or  lowercase  letters  
  4.3    Print  the  Adobe  file  that  comes  up  
5.0    Check  Students  Progress  
  5.1    Go  to  the  home  page  of  Teach  Your  Monster  to  Read  
  5.2    Click  the  orange  “Stats(CSV)”  button  
  5.3    An  Excel  document  will  download  to  your  computer  
  5.3    Click  downloads

Teach  Your  Monster  to  Read  Script  
 
Step   Action  on  Screen   Narration  
1   Intro/title  screen   Hello!    Today  I  will  be  showing  you  how  to  
set  up  a  classroom  account  on  Teach  Your  
Monster  to  Read.    This  is  a  fun  filled  
monster  themed  Reading  game  for  early  
elementary  students.  
2   Show  how  to  open  Safari  to  the   The  first  thing  you  need  to  do  is  open  your  
google  homepage.   internet  browser.    I  will  be  using  Safari  but  
you  can  use  Internet  Explorer,  Google  
Chrome,  Firefox  or  your  browser  of  choice.  
3   Typing   Now  you  need  to  type  
www.teachyourmonstertoread.com   www.teachyourmonstertoread.com  into  
in  the  address  bar.   the  address  bar  at  the  top  of  your  browser  
and  click  enter.  

 
 
4   Clicking  “Start  your  adventure   Next  you  need  to  sign  up  for  a  new  
today”  button account.    To  do  this  you  need  to  click  the  
button  that  says  start  your  adventure  
today.  

 
 
5   Typing  e-­‐mail  and  password.   Type  your  e-­‐mail  address  into  the  top  box  
and  choose  a  password.  I  use  my  school  e-­‐
mail  account  when  setting  up  my  own  class  
account  but  will  be  using  a  different  e-­‐mail  
for  demonstration  purposes  today.      

 
 
6   Click  the  sign  up  and  start  playing   Click  the  sign  up  and  start  playing  button  
button.   after  you  have  entered  your  information.    
Now  you  are  on  your  way.  
7   Click  add  players.   All  we  need  to  do  now  is  enter  your  
students  so  go  ahead  and  click  the  add  
players  button.  

 
 
8   Add  players  screen  is  up.   I  like  to  use  students  first  names  only  since  
I  teach  first  graders  and  it  is  less  for  them  
to  type.    You  could  use  your  students  first  
and  last  name  however  or  another  user  
name  of  choice  such  as  a  lunch  number  or  
initials.  

 
 
9   Type  a  student’s  name  and  show   After  entering  the  student’s  user  name,  
drop  down  menu.       you  can  select  what  level  you  would  like  
them  to  begin  on  from  the  drop  down  
menu.    I  am  going  to  have  all  of  my  
students  start  on  level  1  so  that  they  do  not  
miss  any  important  skills.    If  you  have  some  
more  advanced  students,  you  may  want  to  
start  them  at  level  2  or  3  so  that  they  are  at  
an  appropriate  level.      
10   Click  create  player. Click  create  player  and  you  have  added  
your  first  student.    You  can  now  see  the  
players  name,  password,  and  what  level  
they  are  on.  

 
 
11   Click  add  players  and  add  one  more   To  add  the  rest  of  your  class  click  add  
student  to  the  class.   players  and  repeat  the  process  until  you  
have  added  all  of  the  students  in  your  class.    
12   Click  password  cards  button. Once  you  have  added  everyone  you  can  
print  out  a  password  card  for  each  child.    
To  do  this  click  on  the  button  that  says  
password  cards  and  a  box  will  pop  up  
  asking  if  you  want  the  passwords  in  
uppercase  or  lowercase.  
13   Click  uppercase  and  sheet  with   I  will  select  lowercase  so  that  there  is  a  
cards  will  pop  up.   bigger  distinction  between  an  o  and  a  0.    
Print  this  page  and  cut  apart  the  cards  for  
your  students.    Everyone  is  ready  to  
practice  their  reading  and  have  a  little  
monster  fun  now.  
14   Click  the  back  button  two  times.   The  last  thing  I  want  to  show  you  is  how  to  
check  your  students  progress.    In  order  to  
do  this  lets  go  back  to  the  teach  your  
monster  to  read  home  page  by  clicking  the  
back  button  two  times.  
15   Click  open  tab  to  switch  to  existing   I  am  going  to  click  over  to  my  already  
class. existing  class  to  show  you  how  to  do  this.    

 
 
16   Scrolling  and  pointing  out  specific   If  I  scroll  through  my  class  list,  I  can  see  
kids.   what  level  each  child  is  on  beside  their  
name.    For  example,  Gaige  is  on  level  1  
while  Jacey,  Jake,  and  Jayel  have  
progressed  to  level  2.      
17   Click  Stats(CSV)  button.       For  more  detailed  information,  I  can  scroll  
all  the  way  to  the  bottom  of  my  list  and  
click  the  stats  button.    This  will  begin  a  
download  of  a  spreadsheet  to  my  
download  folder.      
18   Click  download  button  and  click   Open  your  download  folder  and  find  the  
stats  file.   file  named  stats.csv.    Click  the  file  to  open  
the  spreadsheet.  
  
19   Scroll  through  spreadsheet.   I  can  now  scroll  through  the  spreadsheet  to  
see  exactly  what  sound  each  child  has  
worked  on  and  what  score  they  got  on  
each  sound.      Now  I  know  who  may  need  
extra  help  on  specific  sounds  and  I  can  pull  
them  aside  for  small  group  work.
